Review

“I have found nowhere in all my training or reading a more helpful tool for me as a pastor to understand the complexities of psychiatric diagnoses and medicinal prescriptive practices from a Scriptural perspective.” Joseph Vincent Novenson, Senior Teaching Pastor, Lookout Mountain Presbyterian Church, TN “Wisdom is the ability to take complex human experiences and untangle the knots. The painful human struggles that are given psychiatric labels and psychoactive medications perplex us all. Mike Emlet untangles knots. He offers a lucid and humble understanding that will make you think. He commends practical and gracious ways forward that will help you care.”David Powlison, Executive Director, Christian Counseling & Educational Foundation (CCEF); author of Good & Angry and How Does Sanctification Work? “Michael Emlet has nailed it! Finally, we have a medically informed and biblically wise approach regarding what we really know and don’t know about psychiatric diagnoses and medications. We need this holistic aim in ministering to spiritual, emotional, and biological care for those who are suffering. This book is both fascinating and succinct and I will be recommending it often.”Aimee Byrd, author of Housewife Theologian, Theological Fitness, and No Little Women “A remarkable achievement. Dr. Mike Emlet’s introduction to psychiatric diagnoses and medication is brief but comprehensive, accessible yet authoritative. It confronts hard and complex questions with wisdom and balance. . . . I recommend it without hesitation.”Glynn Harrison, Emeritus Professor of Psychiatry and former consultant psychiatrist, University of Bristol, UK “In brief, clear chapters with helpful illustrations and real life vignettes, Mike Emlet has written an excellent and very practical book. He walks a careful middle road between accepting the current cultural diagnosis and treatment system and dismissing the latter as unbiblical and false. He sees value in diagnosis and medication but always in the context of dealing with whole persons.” Richard D. Winter, Psychotherapist, Professor Emeritus of Applied Theology and Counseling, Covenant Theological Seminary “Mike Emlet has written a balanced and much-needed book. We often fall into extreme positions and sadly end up doing damage to those who are suffering. Approaching those who suffer requires great humility, for Scripture is quite clear that we who are made in the image of God do not really even understand ourselves! I pray this book will bear the fruit of humility and compassion in God’s people.”Diane Langberg, Psychologist; author of Suffering and the Heart of God “Mike Emlet has written a much-needed book on psychiatric diagnosis from a biblical worldview. The paradigm of psychiatric labels being descriptive but not prescriptive is very important for biblical counselors and Christians in general. Humbly admitting we have to grow in our understanding of biological issues that interplay with spiritual struggles is right. Challenging a reductionist biological view of man is also right. It is time for the biblical counseling movement to adopt a more robust, balanced, and holistic approach to caring for those who suffer most. This book goes a long way to help us turn the corner. I highly recommend it.”Garrett Higbee, Executive Director of Biblical Soul Care for Harvest Bible Chapel; founding board member of the Biblical Counseling Coalition; president of Soul Care Consulting “In the midst of all the conflicting voices in our culture about psychiatric diagnoses and psychotropic medications, Dr. Michael Emlet has provided a helpful gift to the church. In this short book, you’ll find a clear and nuanced discussion of the wisdom of using or not using psychiatric descriptions and medications. Recognizing the uniqueness of each situation, Dr. Emlet will assist you in making the best decision for each case by furnishing a framework that isn’t the same with every person. I’m thankful for it.”Elyse M. Fitzpatrick, Author of Will Medicine Stop the Pain? “Mike Emlet brings up a topic at the dinner table that most people couldn’t—at least not without causing indigestion. You will find Emlet the best kind of conversationalist on a difficult topic like psychiatric medications, making distinctions clear when needed and acknowledging mystery when needed. He is a man of his time with a heart captured by the rich vision of human life found in ancient Scripture. This book is instantly in my curriculum.”Jeremy Pierre, Associate Professor of Biblical Counseling, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary; author of The Dynamic Heart in Daily Life: Connecting Christ to Human Experience “The intersection of ministry, mental health, and medicine is the Bermuda Triangle of soul care. Dr. Emlet applies his unique multidisciplinary training—physician, pastor, and, biblical counselor—to cut through mystery, myth, and, misconception. Biblical wisdom is the compass to navigate these troubled waters. Descriptions & Prescriptions leans into Scripture as it rejoices in appreciation for God’s gift of medical treatment and holistic pastoral care.”Stephen P. Greggo, Professor of Counseling, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School; coeditor of Counseling and Christianity: Five Approaches “Finally, help in resolving some of the tension felt between the practice of psychiatric labeling and biblical counseling. Counselors have needed direction on navigating the struggles of the human brain and soul, while neither dismissing labeling completely nor fully embracing hook, line, and sinker, everything taught in modern psychiatry. Mike Emlet has again given us wise counsel from the Bible, utilizing his medical background to clarify the language of labeling and the wise use of medication.”Rod Mays, National Staff, Reformed University Fellowship; adjunct faculty, Reformed Theological Seminary “As a pastor and counselor, it is hard not to be overwhelmed by the complexity of mental health struggles. Mike’s book is like a new set of glasses, bringing clarity to these complex issues. Without giving all the answers, Mike lays out perceptive pointers to help readers navigate difficult terrain. Whether you are a pastor, lay leader, parent, or a concerned friend, this book will provide you much needed wisdom.”Kurt Peters, Pastor of St. Matthew’s Anglican Church, Botany (Sydney); Director of Biblical Counseling Australia “Mike has given us a balanced and reliable guide to psychiatric diag¬noses and medical therapies from a biblical perspective that is well-informed by experience and science. Practical, clear, and perceptive, it will be helpful to pastors and mental health professionals, as well as those who suffer in the ways described in the DSM-5. In my opinion, this is the best book in its area for years.”Karl B. Hood, Lecturer in Pastoral Care, Presbyterian Theological College, Melbourne, Australia “With a physician’s training harnessed by Scripture, Mike Emlet leads us along the tightrope of psychiatric considerations with both a poise and grace not often seen when Christians approach this topic. Both the mental health practitioner and the pastoral counselor should be pleased with this robust analysis that challenges us all to rethink our categories in favor of a gospel-centered accounting of these post-fall realities.”John Applegate, Executive Director of the Philadelphia Renewal Network; psychiatrist and director of John Applegate, MD & Associ¬ates, LLC “I recommend this book to help pastors and mature believers in the church who want to better understand the challenges of human psy¬chological suffering from a gospel-centered perspective. Drawing on his personal experience with those who are afflicted by problems of mental health, Emlet leads us away from a reductionist approach to one that is holistic and includes both heart and body. His work gives us an excellent start in ministering to those who suffer.”François Turcotte, President of Séminaire Baptiste Évangélique du Québec (SEMBEQ); elder at Église Baptiste du Plateau Mont-Royal “The relationship between the spheres of the medical and the spiritual in pastoral care can be an extremely tricky one to navigate, especially for pastors with no medical training. That is why this clear and concise book by Mike Emlet is so important. Eschewing the simple reductionism of approaches that deny any usefulness to psychiatric medication, while also refusing to eliminate the spiritual component in many psychiatric disorders, Mike brings his medical expertise and his experience of Christian ministry to bear upon a field that will inevitably cross the path of many Christians. This is a small book but one that should be on the shelf of all those involved in pastoral care.” Carl R. Trueman, Author; pastor, Cornerstone Presbyterian Church, Ambler, PA “Any book that has ‘A Biblical Perspective on Psychiatric Diagnoses and Medications’ in its subtitle is going to be huge, complex, impracti¬cal, and highly controversial. Right? Wrong! Mike Emlet has man¬aged to write a short, accessible, and immensely practical book on this vital subject. And he’s done it in such a sensible, balanced, and biblical way that the book will promote peace and unity rather than debate and division. Here is help for the helpers and for the helpless. David Murray, Professor of Old Testament and Practical Theology at Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary; pastor of Grand Rapids Free Reformed Church; author of Reset: Living a Grace-Paced Life in a Burnout Culture “In Descriptions and Prescriptions: A Biblical Perspective on Psychiatric Diagnoses and Medications, Michael R. Emlet makes accessible for the lay Christian otherwise technical information about the symptoms and treatments of psychiatric disorders. He presents these issues within a biblical anthropology and seeks to help move Christians beyond a generalized fear of psychiatric illnesses and treatments to a ‘third way’ between solely spiritualizing or over-medicalizing these illnesses.”Kathryn Greene-McCreight, Author of Darkness Is My Only Companion: A Christian Response to Mental Illness “As a Christian, have you ever wondered how to think about psychiatric labels and medications? Dr. Michael Emlet has provided a thoughtful, balanced, biblical approach to diagnoses and medications in this book. I’m planning to buy copies and give this out to many of our members.” Deepak Reju, Pastor of Biblical Counseling and Family Ministry, Capitol Hill Baptist Church, Washington, DC; author of The Pastor and Counseling and She’s Got the Wrong Guy “Because our culture increasingly describes problems in terms of psychiatric diagnoses and increasingly seeks solutions through psychoactive medications, this is a vital book for our times. We all need to think more carefully about the labels we are using and the drugs we are taking. This will become a go-to book for Christians wanting a balanced, biblical, and compassionate view of the descriptions and prescriptions that psychiatrists use.” Steve Midgley, Executive Director, Biblical Counseling UK“A reference book of great value for care givers, particularly those of us who are not medical professionals. Mike skilfully deals with a very complex issue and provides a balanced view of the advantages and limitations of ‘descriptions’ and ‘prescriptions’ as well as the important role of biblical counselling in the overall healing process. A must read for secular and biblical counselors alike.“John K. John, DMin (1950-2017), Former Director, Biblical Counseling Trust of India

As someone who suffers from depression (at times severe) and diagnosed with bipolar II, I found this book very helpful as it provides a good overview of psychiatric problems and the medications used to treat them. I would recommend this book to anyone involved in Biblical counseling or who desire to become involved, in fact I think it should be on the must-read list. Dr. Emlet writes with understanding and compassion. I appreciate his admonition to those who counsel to be aware of the complex nature of these problems and recognize they may not have enough knowledge or experience to deal these issues. He states that the struggles of people like me are very real. I almost started to cry that someone acknowledged the struggles are real and the hurting is real.

I work with persons who are often diagnosed with mental health disorders; as a Christian, I have often found this difficult to navigate as I believe we live in a world where over-diagnosis of persons is rampant (from the little boy who can't sit still to the person suffering mental health issues due to substance abuse rather than an inherent illness). I found this book balanced and helpful.

This book was so helpful to me. I learned so much about diagnoses and medication. It would be really helpful for anyone, especially those dealing with a diagnosis or friends and family. It should be in every church building. It is information that can help anyone, but geared toward believers and addresses Christian concerns and prejudices. You do not need prior knowledge about psychology to read and understand this book. Very reader friendly.

This book was great - I came in pretty skeptical towards diagnoses and prescriptions, and I see now how there is a huge opportunity to minister to those that are hurting both physically and spiritually.

“Psychiatric diagnoses are descriptions, not explanations.”Descriptions and prescriptions is divided into two sections. The first section delves into Understanding Psychiatric Diagnoses – the Descriptions.Dr. Emlet hopes to bring the reader to the Goldilocks Principle of not being ‘too hot’ or ‘too cold’ of what he views as the extreme positions.Several of the chapters in this section address the problems and pitfalls of Psychiatric Diagnosis.“To wrap up the last four chapters, the concerns with the diagnostic system when considered together suggest that psychiatric diagnoses have less functional authority than we might initially believe. The DSM may be the best secular classification scheme available, but it remains fraught with difficulties identified from within psychiatry itself.”From there, Dr. Emlet goes on to explain the implications of these diagnoses in ministry and wraps up the section with what he believes is the value in these diagnoses.“At the end of the day, the goal is not simply to confirm or condemn a given diagnosis but to carefully, persistently, lovingly, and biblically bring God’s redemption to bear upon people who struggle with the problems encapsulated in a diagnostic description.”The second section delves into Understanding Psychoactive Medication - the Prescriptions.“This is important. If neuroscientific and psychiatric researchers acknowledge the current limitations of biomedical hypotheses regarding the origin of psychiatric symptoms, how much more should we, as those who bring biblical counsel, acknowledge the complex nature of these struggles, taking into account underlying spiritual, biological, relational, situational and socio-cultural factors.”Space utilized to address the mounting research in regards to the safety and long term effects of psychotropic medications would have been a welcomed addition to this volume, particularly since Dr. Emlet is a physician discussing their usage. He does suggest books from opposing views in the footnotes on page 65.By the end, most will know whether they fall into Dr. Emlet’s view of ‘just right’. Some may find him ‘too hot’ or ‘too cold’ in his conclusions. Perhaps our own positions have been challenged and we have moved on the spectrum. For those reasons, this volume, being more of a primer due to its brevity, is profitable to begin the discussion and encourage the reader to explore these areas in more depth, especially if this is their first exposure to this information.“Whatever helping role in the church God has given you, I pray that you have gained encouragement to pursue those struggling with disordered thinking and emotions, knowing that God himself will provide wisdom to care for both the body and soul of those he entrusts to you.”One caveat: On pages 32-33, sexuality researcher, Alfred Kinsey, is noted for the influence his conclusions had for prominent psychiatrists to remove homosexuality as a diagnosis. This caveat isn’t to highlight Kinsey’s conclusions or to assert that they were included for anything other than that basis but rather to expose what a wicked man Alfred Kinsey was for those unfamiliar. Dr. Judith Reisman has written extensively on Alfred Kinsey for those who are interested.

This is a very helpful and much needed book for Biblical counselors. Written in a very balanced and respectful way, the reader is given basic information concerning current psychological diagnoses and psychotropic drugs. The book helps the reader become more aware of the holistic and team centered approach needed when dealing with the complexities of our human physical and spiritual natures.

Emlet’s thoughts regarding medications and counseling helped me with a counselee just lately. Very practical book for the lay counselor.

This book gave me great insight into Psychiatric Diagnosis and prescriptions that may accompany them. The approach was very balanced and very gospel centered. As a pastor who was looking for more understanding to aid with counseling people who are in the midst of suffering this book was truly helpful.

This book was a disappointment as it is nothing more than a long-winded story. Live beneath your means and save for retirement. There, now you can save money by not buying this book.

Worst financial based book i've ever read! It's a complete joke and waste of ANYBODIES time. The author brags about negotiating on everything he buys, Seriously?...... I've tried a few times, and believe me, i've been in sales my entire life-i know a thing or two about deals and negotiations. Retail, will not deal on almost anything, he should feel very lucky if a smidgen of kind of deal was gotten... This guy is making up his story as it went along.

This books read like an autobiography of some guy's bad spending choices and how he overcame with his vast intelligence. I was hoping for something more along the lines of retirement planning.

I can sum the advice of this book in three points:1. Make a budget2. Spend less than you earn3. Save the rest.

Everyone would like to know how to successfully plan for retirement. This book seems to make this important task in life actually simple. The author not only lays out a plan but lives his life according to his plan and successfully achieves financial success for himself and his family. If you are serious about planning for your future this is not only simple and straight forward it is also a great read about one families journey through life.

No actionable info. It's just a story about what the writer did.

Total waste of time. Really boring story of the author's life, down to negotiating for pieces of furniture. The author tries to sell another book he wrote several times throughout the book. Closet sexism, like when he disagrees with his wife it must be her time of the month and a whole detailed explanation about how in Japanese culture, wives are meant to serve their men. Very outdated, and to be honest, who cares? Also misspelled words (it's descent, not decent) and punctuation errors. You think, it's got to get better. It never does.

Too much of a personal story and very little about living on pennies. I was going to give it 1 star but because the author comes off as smart and had some good points at the end, I jumped to 2 stars. Frankly, Amazon should discontinue it until it is retitled. A real waste of a few good hours - as it is not very helpful relative to what is promised in the title.

I watched a PBS special featuring the Amen's and ordered this book soon afterward. I found it slower going than most books of it's type. Too many anecdotes and too little actual substance for the total pages. My main problem came after reading over most of the book and getting to the point where I was ready to start the "14 Day Brain Boost." I printed out the 42 page journal and prepared to start gathering my go-to recipes, relaxation scripts, and examples of exercise routines to use during my 14 day start-up, which were supposedly easy to access through links provided in the book. A good variety of recipes and ways to use the allowed foods is important to me since I have food allergies and problems with losing too much weight. So, I used the previously mentioned links from the books but, after a free evaluation 'Brain Type' test, I was inundated with ads for more Amen products to buy. Supplements. Foods. Courses. Books. Audios. After 1/2 hour of digging for the information I wanted on the book's provided links, I finally found a total of 12 recipes that could be accessed without a fee. I had planned on buying their cookbook until I saw that several of the 12 recipes online included Amens' branded ingredients, sold on their website. I took the cookbook from my cart and decided to spend the effort finding recipes which met the guidelines of gluten-free, diary-free and low sugar on my own.I had less success finding any specific relaxation aids or the guided full sensory relaxation audios mentioned in the book. I'll just reread the book's section on relaxation techniques from the book and make my own sessions. The majority of the information within the Brain Warrior's Way is good. The Amen's talk of being "sheepdogs" who's life purpose is to teach others to help those around them felt hollow after viewing their sales techniques. Perhaps I am merely being overly critical of their aggressive marketing.

I THANK Dr. Amen for his research and his advice on improving our health. However, he has gone tooooo commercial. 4 emails a day. And too heavy handed advertising.

I feel like I'm reading much of the same information from earlier books, stated a different way. Also concerned about recommendations for some of the supplements which have been shown to be ineffective.I love his previous books and consider them an excellent investment for your health; if you haven't read them, then, Dr. Amen's new book is worth the time.

This book was really disappointing. I have read all the other books by Dr. Amen and this one was just boring. Very little new information.I feel he does a better job when he writes a book by himself. We really don't care about his wife's personal experiences.. I would rather have science.

I do not know one person who wouldn't benefit from reading this. So many things I have learned from this book that I highly recommend that you either write notes in the front of the book or create a note on your phone. Tana Amen talks about victimization of yourself and how to transform your brain from a victim into warrior. (She actually has me considering martial arts). Other great tips; make a list of brain healthy restaurants, make brain health a game with your kids, make 1 decision not 30, warriors don't take December off, everything in moderation is ruining your health, brain is 80 percent water=hydration is imperative, watching news=negative impact, p144-147 has the best brain tips, avoid corn at all costs. I could go on and on. Read it and buy copies for everyone you love.

Anecdotal and you really have to pick through the mess to get to any meat in it. Definitely look elsewhere, this series seems very sales pitchy and a waste of your time.

I love this book because it teaches you a different way to think. It's not all sciency but enough to support the reasoning. I bought this and the cookbook and I'm very glad I did. I'm looking at my choices (both food and exercise) differently and I'm only 25% of the way through. I'm learning to be a warrior for my brain and body and looking at 'deprivation' in a whole new way. Thank you!

A very motivating book, when you consider that it vividly presents the damage we are doing to our brains by mismanaging our diets, and looking the other way. Very compelling in giving reasons not to allow this negative pattern too continue.
