Review

“ As part of the History in 50 series, which weaves together discrete historical events, this work focuses on the evolution of medicine and healing modalities since the dawn of humankind. The intriguing story begins with the excavation of the 5,000 B.C. Neolithic man, given the name “Ötzi the Iceman,” who was found with animal skins containing healing medicinal fungi and tattoos on his body that corresponded with specific acupuncture points. The time-traveling thread continues to the Greek islands of Epidauros around 170 BC to the site of the Asklepieion, the temple of healing. Here, patients were encouraged to engage in sleep therapy while the legendary god worked to cure their ailments. Like building blocks through time, the discoveries of innovators such as Florence Nightingale, Joseph Lister, Paul Ehrlich, James Watson and Francis Crick, and Christian Bernard are thoroughly presented. The book even discusses the present-day public health battle against the Zika virus. The narrative is easy to follow and may appeal to young adults, undergraduates and pre-med students, and general readers.Summing Up: Highly recommended. All readers. ” - D. J. Winchester, Columbia University, CHOICE Connect A Publication of the Association of College and Research Libraries“ Tackling everything from Ötzi, the Neolithic man who treated his tapeworm with a fungus, to the more recent ((late 20th-century) realization that an extract from the artemisia plant can combat malaria, Vigliani and Eaton examine the history of medicine. The topics are arranged chronologically, and the narrative thoughtfully weaves together the seeming disparate worlds of ancient and modern medicine, reminding readers that current lifesaving advances are often based on the work of ancient medical practitioners, folk medicine traditions, and plant knowledge. Chapters are comprehensible and short (approximately five pages in length) and contain colorful illustrations as well boxes highlighting related subjects of interest. Chapter end notes and bibliographical sources are extensive.VERDICT: Bloodletting, organ transplants, the discovery of DNA--it's all here. Those who tackle this book from cover to cover will be rewarded with an understanding of medical progress throughout history, while browsers are sure to return for more. Teachers will find a rich resource likely to spark further student research. ” - School Library Journal“ Marguerite Vigliani, MD, distinguished Rhode Island obstetrician gynecologist, and Clinical Professor at the Alpert Medical School of Brown University, has published, with co-author, Gale Eaton, retired professor of children’s literature in the  University of Rhode Island’s graduate school of library and information services, a beautiful book on the history of medicine. In this era of Kindle, e-books and e-magazines, it is a joy to hold in one’s hands a book that not only feels good, with a significant heft to it, but is beautiful to look at, with pleasing print format, wonderful layout, shiny cover and gorgeous illustrations.            It is a history of medicine for middle and high school students, part of a series intended to grab kids’ attention by focusing on 50 exciting stories in history, in this case, the history of medicine. Of course there can not be a consensus on the 50 most important or the 50 most exciting stories, just as there can’t be universal agreement on who should win a Nobel prize each year, but these are wonderful stories. I must admit up front that Marguerite is an old friend, who delivered two of my children, so that my review may be a tad short of “objective,” but this is Rhode Island, where there are way less than 6 degrees of separation.            Marguerite thought that since I’m a neurologist I’d be most interested in the story on trephining, which traced the history of the practice, seen in skulls of people who had survived for many years after the procedure. But I actually liked best the story about Calmette, an early immunologist who will forever be linked with the BCG inoculation against tuberculosis. He was interested in developing an anti-snake venom treatment and was able, in 1894 to purchase a barrel full of cobras from India. As an ardent believer in the balance between evidence and experience based medicine I was taken by the story of al-Razi, a legendary Persian physician in the late 800’s, who apparently published early, if not the earliest, controlled clinical trials. One demonstrated that epileptics who received sneeze therapy had fewer seizures than those who did not, and that bleeding reduced symptoms of presumed meningitis, compared to controls who were not bled. So much for evidenced based medicine. We learn that Leonardo da Vinci lingered by an elderly dying man to perform a dissection as soon as possible. DNA, blood circulation, the discovery of penicillin and 40+ more topics are cleverly discussed, in a straightforward and engaging manner, that encourages the reader to think about the larger issues associated with each of these 50 medical advances. This will make a great Christmas present for middle school and high school students who might need a little encouragement to learn more about medicine and its history. ” - Joseph H. Friedman, MD, Rhode Island Medical Journal

Buried Dreams: Inside the Mind of a Serial Killer, by Tim Cahill

From Publishers Weekly

This is the absorbing and disturbing story of John Wayne Gacy, the suburban Chicago businessman sentenced to death in 1980 for the murders of 33 young boys, most of whose bodies were buried in the crawlspace under his home. Cahill, aided in his research by TV reporter Ewing, recreates Gacy's unhappy childhood with a violent father; his seemingly respectable life as a successful contractor and civic leader; and his five-year spree as a murderer who raped and tortured his victims. The book is told mainly from the vantage of the homosexual Gacy, a "creature of lies, internal contradictions, misrepresentations, and false idealism," who claims utter confusion over the crimes. Jurors dismissed an insanity plea, finding Gacy complex, antisocial and rational. Cahill includes graphic accounts of torture and sexual acts. From Library Journal

John Gacy, sentenced to death for the Chicago-area slayings of 33 young men, has been the subject of prior bookssee, for example, Terry Sullivan's Killer Clown ( LJ 9/1/83). None, however, has explored the depths of Gacy's aberrant psychology, his childhood, and daily life as well as Buried Dreams. With Gacy's cooperation, albeit often contradictory and self-serving, and a four-year-long investigation, Cahill has managed the difficult task of unmasking, to the extent that it can be done, the motivation of a horrific killer. Readers should be warned that this book contains explicit details of sexual torture and murder. It is as riveting as it is disturbing. Gregor A. Preston, Univ. of California Lib., DavisCopyright 1986 Reed Business Information, Inc.

I've always been interested in the mind of serial killers. I know I'll never figure out what makes them tick: what sets them off. Obviously, after reading about the trial neither can pysch experts (which doesn't surprise me). Five or six expert psychiatrists and pyschologist analyzed John Wayne Gacy and none could agree on a diagnosis. They tended to side with whoever was paying them rather than what the DSM said.As for the book itself, it was written very poorly. There were numerous grammar, spelling, usage, and mechanics errors. On top of that, it was clear that spell check was the primary source for editing. Complete wrong words, such as "was ant" were substituted in for the correct word, "warrant." There was a definite need for a thesaurus as well. The same words or phrases were repeated through the book as was parts of the story. Whatever company, which can be identified in the book, that edited this story did a terrible job.

This book is well written, but redundant. I have read several books on this subject, however never from the perspective of the killer himself. Its a difficult read not because of the subject matter but because Gacy was not an interesting person. The books subject matter requires a third person perspective in order to give a fuller picture of the crimes. This book simply felt like 371 pages of Gacy rationalizing his evil and abhorrent actions. Throughout the book he denies all knowledge of his crimes, with the exception of four. The book jumps around and does not follow a linear narrative pattern. It reads as if it were written in a stream of concience thst soes not work well in this genre. We get the ramblings and rationalizations of a madman for over 300 pages and the most interesting quote comes close to the end. Gacy admits, per the author that he remembers all 33. Why wss this glossed over. Focusing on that quote would have made for a much more compelling book. Skip this superficial drivel and read Terry Sullivans Killer Clown.

Tim Cahill attempts to do the impossible in BURIED DREAMS INSIDE THE MIND OF JOHN WAYNE GACY:He attempts to get inside the head of a serial killer in his own words.Cahill explains in his introduction: “In understanding the crimes committed by John Wayne Gacy, I found it was necessary to learn to think like John Wayne Gacy…I have tried to present a picture of a man’s mind, in his own style of speech, often in his own words. I wanted to put the reader inside that mind—the mind of the murderer…”In this Cahill has succeeded very well. At times I felt dirty, slightly disoriented, even paranoid as I read about Gacy’s 33 murders, the torture, his sheer craziness (so it seems to me and perhaps most “normal” persons). It also raises disturbing questions as to what is “normal” and what is “insane” in the human mind. These are questions difficult to answer because the terms in the questions themselves are difficult to define. What is normal? What is insane? Cahill tries to explain as follows:“A psychiatrist or psychologist can define the symptoms of the disorder, but because the sociopath is propelled by choice rather than illness, the concept becomes almost philosophical, even theological. In discussing sociopathic personalities, one is forced to deal with such abstractions as the idea of free will; in extreme cases, the sociopath brings some of the people he meets face to face with the very nature of evil itself.”Cahill also shares these disquieting thoughts:“I suspect that the majority of readers—those whose lives never touched John Wayne Gacy’s—share, at the outset, my original belief that anyone committing such incomprehensibly cruel crimes must necessarily be insane. But if John Gacy is sane, as those who prosecuted him argued—if the pattern is not symptomatic of mental disease but is rather a rational criminal’s ‘method of operation’—we are confronted with an intensely disturbing moral and philosophical concept. It is not something we ordinarily care to examine too closely, this idea that evil exists in our world. Confronted with the crimes committed by John Wayne Gacy, decent people cling to the cold conceptual comfort of insanity. One psychologist I spoke with about Mr. Gacy stated this position best: ‘Evil is a medieval superstition.’ Then again, he never personally examined John Wayne Gacy, as the reader of this book is about to do.”I would normally in a review discuss in more detail some of these questions, concepts, and details contained in the book. After living in the mad house of Gacy’s mind throughout this book, however, I am not sure what I could add. One would have to read the book to reach his or her own conclusions. In the end, whether we call it insanity or evil, one thing is certain: Something monstrous can and does live in the minds and hearts of some among us.

I must say I was expecting a glossed over analysis of what we all think John Gacy’s mindset was at the time of the murders. I was pleasantly surprised. This is an actual in-depth description on not only what Gacy did, but looking at him trying to understand himself, all while maintaining the fact that he was trying to con everyone to escape death himself. This book was at times difficult to read because the psychoanalysis of John Wayne Gacy the serial killer is a difficult concept to grasp. I would recommend it to anyone looking to get into the mind of a serial killer.

This is a well-researched, well-written report of the life, actions, criminal investigation, psychiatric evaluation, and court proceedings of John Wayne Gacy, the construction company owner/clown who killed 33 young men after homosexual sex and torture and buried most of their bodies in his crawl space/basement. The detail given here is impressive. His diagnosis (Borderline Personality Disorder with some Antisocial Personality Disorder, Narcissistic Personality Disorder, and paranoid schizophrenia) agreed with my suspicions, although I did learn a few things about psychiatric evaluations. Altogether, worth reading.

The book was well put together, easy to read and comprehend. My daughter had to do a speech on this individual and the book gave her the information she needed for her 10 minutes speech. She got an A on the assignment.

For what it is per genre, I enjoyed the book. Not sure if that makes me the sicko or what but so be it. The book was written well. Seems thoroughly investigated and reported on w details of Gacy's mind and thought processes.... The first book I've read written in this style. Many things revealed that I had heard before ab Gacy and his horrific sick and twisted crimes. It was exactly what I was looking for in a read.

Review

"The book by Weiner and Nunes hits the sweet spot in the application of electromagnetic theory to problems on interest in nanoscience. The standard elements of the theory are nicely covered, but unique elements of the book are the "Complements" wherein extensions of electromagnetic theory tonanoscience problems are presented, including the connection polarization and polarizability, of real antennas to oscillating dipoles, and of electromagnetic modes to Einstein coefficients. The book also includes extensive discussions of surface waves, especially plasmon waves, of waveguides, and ofthe semiclassical theory of radiation interacting with atoms. The authors are well known experts in the field, so the book reflects a careful choice of topics relevant for modern nanoscience research. I congratulate the authors on a job well done." --George C. This is a heroine's journey to the west---among other things, a riff on the Chinese classic about a trickster monkey who ventures far into the west of China and encounters all sorts of fabulous situations. Lin-Liu is a gifted journalist, food critic and most of all MEMOIRIST. She makes it very clear that she is exploring her own identity as she reverses Marco Polo's path along the Silk Road. One identity, that of Chinese-American is questioned by many of the Chinese she encounters. Another, that of a married woman, is questioned by Lin-Liu herself, as well as by those she meets.I was particularly interested in her exploration of cooking as women's work or man's work in various settings, as this is a big part of the debate about domestic and professional roles for women everywhere. In fact, at its most active, hardly anyone travelled the whole length of the silk road. Merchants exchanged goods and the goods travelled on. Ideas, like Buddhism, did travel the distance, from India to Japan. As Lin-Liu discovered, ideas about food also moved along the road. Her style is devastatingly honest, and I look forward to reading about the rest of her life and cooking adventures!

Parts of the book were enjoyable, while others were soooo tedious! I particularly enjoyed the Iran, Turkey, and Italy sections; the others just didn't grab me (and by the end, I never wanted to see the phrase "hand-pulled noodles" ever again).I wish there was more wrap-up at the end to bring all the diverse pieces together. It really ended quickly, for the amount of time the journey took (literally and figuratively).

Jen Lin-Liu sets out to travel the ancient Silk Road from East to West to discover the provenance of noodles. She asks the question in the beginning, and finds more than that question to answer. The story involves politics, history, the roles of women, recipes, adventures and a look at herself and her marriage. Each stopping place has something to offer, and she holds the reader's attention. Her network of friends and colleagues is wide-ranging and full of surprises. This author's unquenchable curiosity leads her to cooking lessons, side trips (who else makes a pilgrimage to a town whose fame is in its breakfasts?) weddings and - of course - noodle making. I have certainly enjoyed reading the book.

Page turner! Felt like I was traveling and eating noodles with her.

Warning: Don't read this book on an empty stomach, or if you're on Atkins, because you'll be craving carbohydrates and your stomach will probably be growling throughout the entire book.Jen Lin-Liu was a journalist, food writer, and owner of a cooking school in Beijing. While on her honeymoon in Italy, as she marveled over the culinary delights she and her husband enjoyed, she started wondering about pasta. (And who wouldn't?) More specifically, she started wondering about pasta's provenance, given its popularity in so many different cultures.Who invented the noodle? Was it, as legend and history have said, Marco Polo, who brought the noodle back to Italy from China during his global explorations? Or were mentions of noodle-like substances in the Talmud and Etruscan history, or supposed discoveries of ancient noodles evidence that pasta was enjoyed even earlier in history? Lin-Liu decided to set out on a culinary journey along the Silk Road to discover the origins of pasta. Her journey takes her through small villages in China and Tibet, Central Asia (Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan), Iran, Turkey, Greece, and Italy. She spends time in cooking schools, restaurants, tourist attractions, and even people's homes, learning secrets of rice, pasta, and dumpling dishes the world over, and marveling at their differences and their similarities with the food her cooking school teaches people about in China. But more than that, as she spends time with professional chefs and home cooks, wives and mothers, men and women, she learns a great deal about different cultures and how they view the role of women versus men, as well as the role of food in each of these societies. At the same time, Lin-Liu, a newlywed, is forced to confront her own issues with her marriage. Spending most of her journey on her own, with her journalist husband elsewhere, she wonders whether this trip was good for her marriage, and what role she should play in their relationship after her travels. With food such a central part of her life, but not nearly such an obsession for her husband, are they doomed to fail?Lin-Liu cites two points raised by food historian Charles Perry, which illustrated some of what she learned in her travels. "If a people eat much of a dish, this does not mean that they have eaten it forever, [and] if a people eat little of a dish...it does not follow that they never ate much of it."As a huge pasta, noodle, and dumpling lover, I enjoyed reading about Lin-Liu's experiences, and the incredible (and sometimes nauseating) food she was able to eat and cook during her travels. But after a while, I stopped caring about the purpose of her mission (the issue of provenance seems to come and go throughout the book) and just focused on her conversations and her discoveries. She's an excellent writer and describes the things she ate and saw with terrific detail. But if anything, the weak link in the book is Lin-Liu herself. She is fairly unflinching in writing about her own issues with her marriage and her role as a woman, which doesn't quite endear her to the reader. And when she recounts certain exchanges with her husband you definitely sympathize with him, not her. It takes a lot to write about yourself in an unflattering way. This is a fascinating book, and the recipes that Lin-Liu includes are well worth the price. If you've ever dreamed of going on a worldwide food journey, but don't think it's something you can afford (financially or weight-wise), live vicariously through Jen Lin-Liu. You'll enjoy yourself, and be super hungry.

I love the inclusion of recipe. Fascinating history of the noodle and its variations in different countries. Makes the reader hungry and justifies my love for everything pasta.

I enjoyed reading about the food cultures of the different countries that she visited, especially the muslim countries such as Iran and Afganistan. She had a solid relationship with her husband, as she traveled for long periods of time without him. It was interesting that noodles aren't as much a part of the asian food scene as I would have thought.

It was interesting to read about places and food I would never known about. The writer made you feel as though you were right there with her. The recipes sound interesting and I will make some of them. The only thing I got a wee bit tired of was her over analyzing herself and her marriage. A good read.
