Containing more than 25,000 terms that match up with 3,000 black-and-white illustrations, The Facts on File Visual Dictionary is perfect for anyone who desires a wide range of detailed graphic knowledge from a variety of areas. The Facts on File Visual Dictionary not only provides a wealth of pictures, graphics, and illustrations--listed by theme in an easy-to-follow table of contents--but also lets readers start from just one word, providing a series of indexes broken into thematic and specialized sections to help them find what they're after. These sections cross-reference each other nicely, making it simple for the dedicated linguistics student to track down pictures of everything from an accordion pleat to an accordion bag by just flipping a few pages.

From Library Journal

A society (and age) increasingly dependent on visual language is badly in need of a tool to guide in refining use of terminology and in relating terms to clearly illustrated visual objects. Corbeil, linguist and authority on terminology, is largely successful in his effort. In this work information is presented under 28 major subjects (themes) further divided into numerous categories and sub-categories, beginning with the natural world and progressing through human and social topics. Except for preface and introduction, there is no narrative; the book is composed of black-and-white drawings of the object, activity, etc., labeled by precise term or terms. Three indexes and selected bibliography complete the volume. Reginald Bragonier's What's What: a Visual Glossary of the Physical World ( LJ 2/1/82) invites comparison. The Facts on File Visual Dictionary 's scholarly preparation, linguistic basis, and emphasis on precision distinguish it. For most public and academic libraries. Harry E. Whitmore, Arrowhead Lib. I have had this title for more than 15 years and still find occassions to thank it for being there on my bookshelf. If you love line drawings, you will love this book. The sketches are neat and detailed. The feel of the book is that of a classic work. In some sections (such as household items, clothing) it is way superior to other works sch as DK's "Ultimate Visual Dictionary".What it lacks is coverage of articles that have come into existence after 1985. That might sound a huge miss but it is not actually so. I believe you need to pair this book with a more recent visual dictionary. But there is nothing that can replace this book. The three indexes at the back (general, thematic and specialised) make looking up a word or drawing very easy.If you are someone who must know the exact word, then you must have this title on your bookshelf.

Great homeschool book. Kids learn so much curling up with this.

Excellent book. Great vocabulary tool.

I've owned this book since I was a very young child, and I still find myself looking through the pages occasionally to find out the name of some "whatchamacalit." The book is 797 pages, including an extensive index. The drawings are simple yet detailed. For instance, on page 288, there's a drawing of a man's felt hat, with lines indicating the name of each section of the hat, including the brim, the binding, the hatband, the bow and the crown. Depending on what industry you work in, this kind of information might be critical to doing your job successfully. There's a section on "Transportation by Sea," with dozens of full-page drawings of various kinds of watercraft, with lines indicating each section and the specific name for each item. A "passenger liner" drawing on page 419 has about 25 different lines indicating the name of different parts of the ship.I highly recommend this book for writers who want to know the name of that "thingamajig," as well as for parents of children with Asperger Syndrome or other detail-specific conditions, who are always wanting to know the specific names of different things.

This is a wonderful book that, instead of using words to describe terms, uses pictures to allow you to see what the various parts of things are called. The book is very well organized, starting with Astronomy and ending with Symbols. Within each category (or subcategory) you can find a line drawing of what you need to know about, then look at the labels and understand the parts. One of the things I find truly amazing about this book is that it illustrates how precise a vocabulary each "thing" has. Flipping to a page at random, I end up on page 233, which is within the House Furniture category. There are three illustrations on this page: a steam iron, a can opener, and a kettle. The steam iron has no fewer than seventeen parts labeled. They are: steam button, thumb rest, slide selector, temperature dial, spray, fill opening, front tip, button notch, shell, soleplate, heel rest, sight-glass tube, fabric guide, cord, vertical cord life, handle, and spray button. Whew! For people who need to know the exact word for some part of a physical thing, this is a terrific book. And if you just like to browse and learn, this is a terrific book.

GREAT BOOK !!! I have had this book for many years and have had Many occassions to bring it out. Now my grandchildren are of an age that they like to see "exactly" what I am trying to describe, etc. This will help my daughter in another State to fill in for Grandma and her descriptions. Thanks for a great book. AWL

This book is great for those times when you need to describe something to someone and you just don't have the vocabulary to do it. In a matter of seconds, find the piece of equipment, etc. that you are looking for and then you know what all the parts are called. It's like having a whole new vocabulary and hundreds of diagrams.

(this review may contain spoilers)This is a good guide for the curious couple wanting to add some kink to their sex life. More than that it is a good book for the curious woman wanting to know what it means to be dominant. It is NOT what you read about or watch in fiction. This guide won't transform you into the porn Dom with whips and leather (unless you already have that tendency, and need it unlocked with a bit of pushing). It is what you make it however. If you want the role of Goddess. Your man will worship you, serve you, please you AND LOVE EVERY SECOND!! Believe me it is not a dream.Every woman has the power to bring men to their knees. A Dominant woman keeps a man on their knees until she is fully satisfied.

I personally think this book was pretty awful.I've been a dominant woman in the lifestyle two years with a long term live in partner of whom I'm engaged to. Our dynamic has never wavered, and we live a female led relationship 24/7. And I hang out on a pretty awesome BDSM forum and have read and interacted on it quite a lot. I've purchased this book, The Mistress Manual, and Uniquely Rika so I have been subjected to different writing styles and points of view.If I'd read this book as total a newbie, I would have been like, "huh, interesting bedroom games and thoughts..." and put it on the bookshelf never to use as "a lifestyle" ever. She does not present a lifestyle from which to live with a long term loving partner day to day. This book was written from the prospective a professional dominatrix. At most, it'll help you be safe; if about twice a month you want to hit on someone. In the beginning, it makes a bunch of judgments and uses a bunch of labels that I really don't care for. Why do you need a name that implies a lower status just because you're not "hardcore" and "24/7" ? Everyone does it as much as they need and want. No need for such labels.Regarding sadism and masochism, it was a lot of technical info with a few diagrams and safety details I already 99% knew from learning online. If you don't have the time to learn from online about S/M then perhaps this is a book for you, the S/M newbie.Regarding dominance and submission...Well, I didn't see much of it. The author is a professional "dominatrix". Which makes her a Top with, hopefully, skills to illustrate a fantasy for a client. I hated how she presented D/s as so much work for her and none for him. Example?"This is the clothes you have to buy and wear to give -him- a good time and make you feel like you're playing the part." This concept of constantly catering to the male fantasy is a recurring theme. Don't get me wrong, clothes can give you a lot of confidence and really put you in the mood. But I can top and dominate in jeans and a t shirt just as well and feel no need to wear all leather just to give a potential partner a hard on. Remember, I'M not getting PAID because I'm a lifestyle dominant- not a pro. I don't have the money to buy all the frivolities she suggests to make everything a good time for -him-. My current partner doesn't expect it! And I would just feel resentful if any future partners expected it.I think D/s is better represented elsewhere. I did a review on "Uniquely Rika," and highly recommend it.

The audience for this book will quickly discover that this woman knows how to write and she knows her subject backwards and forwards, and inside and out. This is a more advanced look at D&S and S&M than the majority of those on the market. While most of the techniques described in minute detail in this guidebook are far beyond this reader's personal experience, there is always something useful for anyone to learn from reading it. It does answer some of the nagging questions that everyone curious about the scene seeks to know--even if they aren't going to personally try those most advanced experiments in extreme sensation, domination, fisting, humiliation, slave training, water sports or exhibition and group party games. Ditto for actually trying pony training, caning, using the bullwhip and violet wands. This book purports to be intended for women to turn their consenting monogamous adult male partners into happy, sexually satisfied silly putty. The boast is justified. As a male, this reviewer doubts that many men could describe the "in's and out's" of the psychology of humiliation, mind games or other detailed techniques for driving males crazy with desire half as well as this former dominatrix-turned-author. There is no question from the material covered in the book that this woman has vast experience with her subject matter and she doesn't hesitate to share her knowledge in excruciating detail after detail. Even the readers of these games will know instinctively that what she is describing works--sometimes it even begets results just from reading her thoughts as she transfers them to the printed page. Because this book is much more advanced than most on the subject, a lot of time is devoted to playing safely. Two different anatomy charts of the male body are included with the danger zones for each activity clearly marked. It's like a scene out of the old movie classic "Spartacus" where the ex-gladiator drill sergeant is using Kirk Douglas's body to paint the various kill and injury areas to show the other would-be gladiators. One doesn't have to read far to understand how fragile the human body really is. It's obvious why Varrin goes to the trouble of pointing out the danger points for some of her extreme S&M games. For instance she reminds the reader never to use the violet wand above the waist and to know if your partner has any kind of heart trouble or a pace maker. Electricity is always dangerous even in mild doses. Like any serious writer or practitioner of these D&S and S&M scenes, communication, knowledgeable consent, detailed planning, safe sex, and more communication even during and after the scene is completed are indispensable. The reason for the increasing popularity of this kind of play is simple: done correctly it can make a sexual tryst last for hours or even all night and into the next day. Where else can a loving couple have seemingly endless sex? And because it is so satisfying, great care must be taken to protect one's playmate from any kind of injury or real, unwanted harm including utter exhaustion. This book will definitely provide enlightening reading for interested would-be participants as well as the people who are simply curious about the practices described. It's one of the better tomes on the complex subject. And while it's primarily intended as a guide for women to use on their willing, kinky male lovers or husbands, most of the techniques can easily be adapted for any combination of males and females. Even games for "hen parties" are suggested. How many male submissives have lust-filled dreams of being the focal point of a house or dungeon party comprised entirely, or mostly, of skilled dominatrixes with him as the door prize or party favor for all of them to sample?

I'm both an immigrant and US citizen. The Constitution fascinates me but also fills me with awe. Lutz's book may seem a little dry but its account of the transition from proud British immigrant to proud US citizen is fascinating. The profound heart searching and scholarship which accompanied this transition is remarkable. It may be politically incorrect for schools to teach this aspect of those early days preferring instead to preach identity politics, nevertheless Prof Lutz is there to be read and I hope and pray that before it is too late a culture of scholarship and reason dawns again in our liberal art and law schools.

A must read. Let's get it back in the public school teachings and raise powerful future politicians.

This 170 page book manages to cover the origins of the American Constitution more completely than any other work I have read. The author, Donald S. Lutz, convincingly demonstrates the sources of the American Constitutional ideas. The sources are not at all what I was taught in school. When mentioned at all, constitutional ideas like separation of powers and three branches of government were linked to a few European philosphers like Locke and Montesquieu;Lutz convincingly shows that not only are the ideas on government contained in the Constitution uniquely American, but that the whole idea of constitutionalism is an American invention. In 1787 the only written Constitutions that existed in the world were the Federal US Constitution and the 13 State Constitutions.Even the Bill of Rights contains mostly rights elucidated and developed by the Americans. Lutz points out that of the 27 rights in the US Bill of Rights only 6 were first found in Magna Carta. 75% of these rights were found in American documents prior to the English Bill of Rights in 1689 or the writings of John Locke. While even now most texts will attribute to John Locke the rights of "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness", the origins of these ideas came from much earlier American documents. For example, from the Massachusetts laws of 1641 (Locke was only 9 years old at the time), we read "No mans life shall be taken away... no mans person shall be arrested.... no mans goods or estate shall be taken away..." Life, liberty and property as rights were first written here from John Cotton and Nathaniel Ward and the Puritans who found them in the Bible and implicit in the English Common Law; Locke had nothing to do with it.Another aspect that Lutz covers well is the transition from covenant theology to constitutional government. Lutz also notes the US Constitution was written after 150 years of experieince in self-government and after all 13 states writing their Constitutions. Experience was the main source of most government institutions; not European philosphy, though the founders often cited then-current philosphers like Locke and others. In short, this is an excellent, scholarly work that will educate the reader more than all the college history, political science classes and poorly-researched wikipedia articles put together. Highly recommended. As the author wrote near the end of the book, "The origins of the American Constitution, like the constitutional tradition of which it is a part, are complex and manifold, but ultimately planted firmly in American soil."

This is a fascinating and valuable book. There are a number of scholars who have studied American constitutional history who have made major contributions--Forrest McDonald, Bernard Bailyn, and--in this book--Donald Lutz.He explores the various elements that shaped the American Constitution. He develops a rich data base. Among these documents--colonial constitutions, state constitutions after the revolution, charters, covenants (religious documents), and pamphlets and sermons. Pulling these various sources together, he presents a story of the roots of the Constitution, He also discusses the Declaration of Independence and the Articles of Confederation. One very important chapter explores the people to whom the Founding Fathers referred. There were changes with time. Sources included the Bible (as a result of sermons), radical Whigs in England (Trenchard and Gordon), Enlightenment thinkers (Locke and Hume), English common law, and the classics (Greek and Roman sources). All in all, a fascinating examination of the roots of the American Constitution. . . .

“Delightful . . . The mysteries in Mr. Bradley’s books are engaging, but the real lure is Ms. de Luce, the irreverent youngster.”—The Wall Street Journal                                       “A winning tenth mystery.”—People“A ghoulish question is at the heart of Bradley’s excellent tenth Flavia de Luce novel. . . . Bradley, who has few peers at combining fair-play clueing with humor and has fun mocking genre conventions, shows no sign of running out of ideas.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)   “Flavia’s over-the-top use of alliteration . . . and proudly precocious, sesquipedalian vocabulary . . . along with the thoroughly endearing cast of characters, make this series’ tenth installment a laugh-out-loud winner.”—Booklist (starred review)    “Flavia de Luce hasn’t lost a sister, she’s gained a case—and what a case. . . . Perhaps the most consistently hilarious adventure of the alarmingly precocious heroine.”—Kirkus ReviewsAcclaim for Alan Bradley’s beloved Flavia de Luce novels, winners of the Crime Writers’ Association Debut Dagger Award, Barry Award, Agatha Award, Macavity Award, Dilys Award, and Arthur Ellis Award “If ever there were a sleuth who’s bold, brilliant, and, yes, adorable, it’s Flavia de Luce.”—USA Today “Delightful . . . a combination of Eloise and Sherlock Holmes.”—The Boston Globe “[Flavia] is as addictive as dark chocolate.”—Daily Mail

I own every Flavia de Luce mystery written by Alan Bradley. It is one of the few mystery series I felt I needed to collect as I mostly read ebooks from my Library. While I have loved all the stories to date and hope to see the series one day in Movie form, I have to take exception to the horrible quality of the current edition. I have purchased this title and received a replacement (2 copies) and both are going back! The first copy was littered with faintly printed pages (>20). The second was slightly better, but again had numerous pages that are printed faintly, some almost to the point of being extremely difficult to read. I am collecting these books for my kids and their kids and the quality of the production is so poor that I felt compelled to write this review as Amazon doesn't really act on the feedback when you send back items. I would like to see if others are having the same issue. I will update my review when Delacorte Press addresses these production issues. Alan Bradley and Flavia deserve better (as do Mrs. M, Dogger, Ophelia and Daphne)! What would Antigone say?

This is a brand new book. Page 40 was completely blackened out and the right hand side of the last ten pages was faded so much it was hardly readable. Now I know why printed material is dying out. I am returning this, hopefully for a good copy. This series from this author is wonderful.

I loved the story, cannot go wrong with Flavia! The poor quality of this book is shocking. Many of the pages in one section are PASTED OVER with new text, and within that section, the pages not pasted over are so pale they can hardly be read.I am not sure who should make this right, Amazon or the publisher. Someone needs to!

The book is probably good if you get a copy where the pages are all readable. I have already run into four pages that are so faded I can’t believe they made it past any sort of quality control. Returning this copy and hoping for a decent one, otherwise I will return and buy from a local bookstore where I can see before I buy.

really liked this series up until the book prior to this one (totally blocked the title!). I hated Flavia's father's death and really didn't see the point. I thought I'd give the series one more try, this book while better than the previous book was only so-so. A few of the characters were moved along in their lives (again with very little point) and the central "mystery" was preposterous. This is the last book for me in this series. My reading time is too valuable and this wasn't worth it.

I am obsessed with the delightful Flavia de Luce and her quirky family. In fact I own all of Alan Bradley's books and always look forward to the next. However, this particular book seems to have lost some of the essence of Flavia. There are several instances where the "old" Flavia would have sussed out evidence and ventured out on her own. Perhaps it was an attempt to expand the character of Dogger, or perhaps it was an attempt to ease Flavia into puberty (several examples of uncharacteristic emotions brought on by hormonal changes?). At any rate, Flavia and Dogger's investigation is fascinating. The plot, as always, is full of twists and turns. I enjoyed the book, but I hope for the return of a more spirited Flavia in the next adventure.

A great addition to the Flavia franchise. The detective team of Arthur W. Dogger & Associate (Flavia) brings something wholly new to the series. It's conceivable that Father asked Dogger to look after Flavia, and their interests and talents are very much in sync. As with most of the Flavia books, the mystery is less than compelling and in this case the resolution leaves important questions unanswered. But I can overlook that because I have low expectations for Bradley's mysteries and high expectations for the pleasure of reading the books. And this one is very enjoyable.Dogger and Flavia are a terrific team. And now Undine is demonstrating she's got a lot of Flavia's qualities: she's smart, curious, nervy and impish. Flavia has matured and functions somewhat as a big sister to her. Feely and Dieter's wedding kicks off the mystery and then they're away on their honeymoon. I care about everyone at Buckshaw so I was disappointed Daphne has such a small role. I thought I detected a trail of breadcrumbs leading to a friendship or budding relationship with Carl Pendracka, but no, the few times she appears Daffy is limited to reading or writing. Perhaps that's a quibble, because the relationship between Flavia and Dogger is the central one and it makes for great reading. There was talk the tenth book was to be the last, and I'm so glad Bradley has announced we will have more Flavia. Some books in the series are better than others, but I will never tire of them.
