About the Author

Demetria Martínez is an author, activist, lecturer, and columnist. Her autobiographical essays, Confessions of a Berlitz-Tape Chicana (Univ. of Oklahoma Press), won the 2006 International Latino Book Award in the category of best biography.Born in Albuquerque, NM, in 1960, where she now resides, Martínez earned her BA from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University. She teaches at the annual June writing workshop at the William Joiner Center for the Study of War and Social Consequences at the Univ. of Massachusetts, Boston. Martínez writes a column for the independent progressive bi-weekly The National Catholic Reporter. She is involved with Enlace Comunitario, an immigrants' rights group that works with Spanish-speaking survivors of domestic violence.

The star tab isn't working for me, so my last few reviews note the number of stars. This book is a collection of prose and poetry from Martinez. For the most part it's provocative and at times hilarious. Some of the pieces are more serious and thoughtful.My favorite excerpt is the one where she explains how Latinos choose to self-identify in the US: Chicana/o, Latina/o, Mexican, Mexican-American or Hispanic. And, with each category she says more. This two - three page section had me smiling.The book's audience are those who fit the above demographics and others interested in discussions of race, sexuality, and feminism. The author is a published author of a few books of poetry and is/was a reporter for a Catholic newspaper.

In quick succession, Tom is swallowed by a cow and tickles his way out, and is snatched by a raven that drops him down the chimney of none other than the giant who has been plaguing the countryside. The protagonist offers his services around the house, but eventually the huge man's evil nature overtakes him and he eats Tom. Having already dealt with the cow, Tom gives Gembo such a case of intestinal distress that the giant coughs him into the moat, where he is eaten by an enormous salmon, which a fisherman catches and takes to King Arthur. Since Gembo has left the country in shame, Tom is knighted and feted by the court, and when he begins to miss his parents, he returns to their farm with a bag of gold coins. Mayer's fine retelling is sure to capture the fancy of young readers as happily as she's captured the spirit of the little fellow's adventures. Less wordy than older retellings, this luscious edition will find a ready audience, and the source notes will aid and satisfy teachers and researchers. Craft's opulent oil-over-watercolor illustrations will draw in even the most reluctant reader. The impish Tom, with curly red hair and freckles, is dressed in elfin finery with a tiny, magic sword strapped at his side. The retelling of Tom Thumb by Marianna Mayer is very well done. One adventure flows into the next seamlessly. The story has been around forever it seems with references back as far as 1579. It has been told and retold. What really adds to this retelling is the illustrations by Kinuko Craft. Whenever I get a chance to purchase a book with his illustrations, I do it. I know that I'm in for a treat as I read the stories to my grandchildren just because of the pictures. Well, they are very plentiful in this edition, as colorful and detailed as all his work. When the script calls for magic there is no one like Craft to layer the scene with mystical, masterful strokes.

This book is just I remembered it! It was one of my faves and couldn't wait to read it to my son! The book was in great condition for being used, I totally trust the seller!

This is a beautiful rendition of the traditional fairy tale, faithfully told, with an endnote telling a little about the folkloric history of the story. Tom Thumb overcomes tremendous odds and defeats enemies much larger than himself through courage and intelligence, endearing himself to small listeners for generations.The gorgeous illustrations are "loosely based on those of twelfth-century England, and the borders and ornamentation are inspired by manuscripts of the same era." Craft's unique paintings are lush and full of movement, and they add a significant aesthetic quality to an already pleasing story. One quibble is that the queen of the fairies is depicted at the baby's christening leaning over the baby in an off-the-shoulder gown that is just this side of modesty. Still, the book makes an excellent addition to a fairy tale collection.

I've been using this book for a couple of months now and I have found it pretty invaluable. It manages to give a good technical explanation (I mean at the designer/programmer level) as well as include information on the big picture. It covers, in considerable detail, role based security, RBAC, RAD, both EJB and CORBA solutions, and ends with a discussion of how you might build an integrated security system for a fictitous company called eBusiness.comOn the downside there are several minuses which will hopefully be corrected in a future edition1. The UML diagrams are incorrect, in that they nearly all have the aggregation symbol at the wrong end2. The fact that the book was written by several authors shows, in that the same idea shows up in several places in the book, without correlation. Not that there's anything contradictory about that. It would be nice if the different "definitions" or explanations were somehow collected in one place. For example, there's two discussions of security servers, with neither one aware of the other. The second discussion (p. 331-332) is not even referenced in the index.3. There's very little discussion of performance issues. This is a particular sore point, considering they spend considerable amount of space discussing (even promoting) EJB security with no mention of its downside (its too slow)All in all, though, I highly recommend this book be read by architects, and app developers as well as product managers before diving into security development for your application

It contains little source code, but in the security world the less you code the more you secure.One of minus is lack of .NET security and integration with J2EE security... may be this will be next book?I would recommend this book to software architects, project managers and professionals working on enterprise systems integration.

Up to now, this book is unique in its kind, as it really covers the security aspects of distributed applications as we see them more and more these days. The authors do not only cover (very new) technologies and standards from the domain of EJB and CORBA, they also make us aware of their integration with legacy systems and network security. I liked the way they try to pass their knowledge and experience to the reader. Despite the fact that it is written by three persons, the book is of a consistent style. An example application serves troughout the book to explain the coved topics. Altough it is a small and simple application (real world is tougher...), it shows amazingly well what problems have to be dealt with in the enterprise. The book won't give you answers to all your question, but will certainly help to find your own. I recommend it reading from cover to cover, later chapters do refer to earlier ones. Definitely a useful book!
