As a frequent visitor to NYC, I found this book to be quite refreshing. I learned a little history about places I'd seen, but knew anything about.The photographs were a great addition, beautiful and clear. The small tidbits of information made it just a bit more personal. I have recommended it to friends who are making a journey to the,"City" and can't wait to go back and treasure hunt these places out.

I am Native New Yorker & learned so many new places. I had the book laying on my shelf and another local browsed & loved it so I gave it as a gift—now I need to buy another!!!

Disappointed. Am in NYC as I write this. The Chaim Gross Village Studio doorbell went unanswered (on a Friday after 1pm). I couldn't find the Microcosm down the dark Cortlandt Alley. And no sign of the Berlin Wall segment in Midtown. I guess it's time to update the book.

Exceeded my expectations. Excellent pictures and descriptions.

The author is a renowned expert on addressing the work and life deficit in America. He is in the forefront of a Buddhistic approach to life. It is for the living and not acquisition.

A good book for those looking to find a way to balance work and life.

This is a must-read for every working person in America. I'm going to buy it for everyone on my team and the senior management at my company (along with Julie Morgenstern's 'Never Check Email in the Morning', a more clinical approach). Joe encourages the blasphemous idea of putting ourselves and our lives first, which in turn has a positive impact on our work productivity and health. My inner dialogue has already changed dramatically at work and I'm not even done with the book. Brilliant!

I decided last year that I would like to learn the Spanish language. Like many such wishes, this one has fallen victim to a lack of time... But now there is a wonderful motivational book on making time for such things -- and for our families and communities. Joe Robinson's "Work to Live: The Guide to Getting a Life" ... pulls out all the stops, from the stories to the numbers, in making the case for less work and more time, tells us how to do this personally, and ends with a roadmap for achieving legislation making a few weeks of vacation each year a right. Much of the writing is very funny, and some of the stories of folks who 'saved' their vacations for periods of years only to lose them in a corporate takeover, or due to ill health, are heartwrenching. My favorite stories involved those courageous souls who did go to the boss and ask for some time off, either in the form of a reduced workweek or for that most unAmerican of events, the month-long vacation. These stories are inspiring; indeed, I now have Joe's suggested list of "things I'm going to do before it's all over" on the refrigerator (and, yes, it starts with "learn Spanish" :-). I finally found the time to read Mr. Robinson's book Work to Live. But, it isn't because I've been working. Au contraire. I quit my job in August 2002 to go answer a few questions I had about life, and to make a life change (I don't like that word career). While I've been back for 5 months as of this review, that was after 7 months straight of traveling Asia (Thailand, India, Nepal, Indonesia, Singapore, among others), and a loop around Australia, and parts of Arabia. That was a follow up to 3 months driving around the US, 6 weeks in S. America (Rio Carnaval!), and 3 weeks in China & Taiwan. I'll be on the road again soon! My change in life was fueled by personal events and only reconfirmed by Sept.11th. I may not have quit if I had more time off (Though I am vey glad I did in retrospect!). Our antiquated vacations laws are something I became consciously aware of (And mad!) when I traveled to Europe for business or when I met fellow travelers in other places.In the eye of the storm, it is difficult to see the truth. And that is what applies to the masses of the USA in regards to work. We can't see the forest for the trees. Mr. Robinson discusses so many ideas that I have come to on my own - including the distortions of our productivity reporting. I may someday write a book that takes these ideas even further.So many "difficulties" our country faces are ripple effects from our lack of time to see the big picture. On this fact alone, Mr. Robinson's work is in my list as one of the most important books of the present for Americans. Read it!In the book Mr. Robinson quotes Hewitt Associates a number of times. Hewitt is the #1 benefits consultant in the US (World?). They have a reputation as a great place to work. So much so that supposedly they were no longer ranked, they were consultants to the "Best Companies to Work For" list. Funny thing is, I worked there for 9 months in 1997 as a system consultant and there was a very high employee churn rate. Of the 6 people that interviewed me (One a company veteran of almost 20 years and my mgr), all but 1 were gone within a year of my leaving. One of the reasons - they counted face time, not productivity. It was a pressure cooker for hours, it was like a cult. Maybe it has changed. I doubt it. I even have a PDF comparison chart of vacation time that Hewitt posted on their website not long ago!I agree with almost everything Mr. Robinson is talking about. I just think he could have cut the book by 25-33% to get the same point across. The first half of the book especially just seemed to be a rehash of the same thing over and over. The 2nd half of the book is more concise.

This is a must-read for all Americans! Because most Americans work too much and have very little vacation, they are stressed out, eat too much junk food, don't get enough sleep, have very little leisure time, rarely see their friends, and have little time for their spouse, children and pets! Joe Robinson is trying to get ALL Americans a minimum of 3 weeks paid vacation per year (Europeans and Australians get 4-6 weeks by law, while Americans get ZERO). In this book, Joe shows you how to work less and get more vacation time! He also talks about how we are constantly busy and don't know how to slow down. There's a lot to learn in this book!

Highly recommended. Our workaholic-fueled corporate world pressures us to live in a way completely inconsistent with our own best interests. This is in stark contrast to the European model of healthy balance between work and leisure. This is a subversive book - read it! Join the campaign.

I am going to keep this brief. Joe Robinson's book needs to be read by every person who has ever worked a day in America. This is an important and overlooked issue, and Robinson is the forerunner in the field. If you have ever felt work-related angst, pick up "Work to Live", and change the way things work. Pun intended. Charlotte McPherson is an American with dual citizenship who has lived in Turkey since 1979. For her graduate studies at Indiana University she specialized in Uralic Altaic languages and history. It is a very useful resource for someone who doesn't know anything about the country's customs pertaining to day-to-day life and interactions (greetings, introductions, manners, making friends). We also appreciated the historical, political, and socioeconomic background, too. Did not read the business section since it was not relevant to our travel.

This book gives a bit of history and very brief introductions to various aspects of Turkish culture, so that when I went there I could feel moments of recognition in all that was strange and unfamiliar. It is so compact I could slip it into my carry-on to take to my travel partner.

I liked brief into Turkey history. Without understanding history of a country you cannot understand culture and believes.Gives good explanation of how to behave and how not to behave in Turkey.

Folks like Noah Diamond and Josh Frank have opened that book again, and Frank has done the extra work of dragging it kicking and screaming into 2019.As you know from reading the synopsis, Giraffes on Horseback Salad was a project that Dalí worked on while visiting the Marx Brothers in 1937. MGM took one look at it, and quite rightly ran screaming in the other direction. Giraffes on Horseback Salad could never have been made as a movie. I wish the pages were rendered by Dali, but that's not really practical, and Pertega successfully fuses surrealism and comic book whimsy. One can easily imagine an alternate version of this story from some of Neil Gaiman's collaborators - Dave McKean or Charlie Vess, for example.It's a remarkable book. I don't know whether it will reach beyond the intersection of people interested in graphic novels, the Marx Brothers, and surrealist art, but I'm in the middle of that particular Venn diagram, and I heartily recommend it for anyone else in here with me.

After reading this book, I went to Google to read up more on Achilles and Patroclus and all the other fascinating characters that came alive in this story. I couldn’t get enough. This story is so richly told with so much imagination and emotion, but I still wanted more, even after turning the last page.Of course Achilles is a great warrior with immortal strength and speed, but I didn’t know he was musical or had disguised himself as a girl to avoid the Trojan War. In this story, he becomes a multi-faceted person told through the eyes of his dearest companion Patroclus. His confidence defines him, his respect fot everyone is dignifying, his indifference to everyone’s adoration is amusing, and his attunement to Patroclus’s every thought and emotion is profoundly moving.Patroclus was a surprise as the story evolved. He’s no warrior in a society that values physical strength. He describes himself as weak, scrawny, and not at all articulate. He’s suppose to be a prince of a great king, but he’s content to live in Achilles’ shadow. I could scarcely hold my contempt. What could Achilles possibly see in him? But as the Trojan War drags on for ten long years, physical strength seems increasingly meaningless. And Patroclus’s compassion, his loyalty, his integrity, and his dignity really start to shine. Who’s the real hero in the Song of Achilles?

This book quickly and easily landed in my all time favorites list. The writing is just beautiful, descriptive and rich and nearly poetic. I enjoyed the story as well- as a mythology fan it was perfect. I am absolutely crazy about this book. If I ever get a chance to have the author sign this I will be thrilled- her writing was superb. I was sad when I finished reading this because I knew it would be some time before I was this moved again.

It's a free preview, which I appreciate, but in this instance it led me to decide against buying the book. I'd just finished Achilles (really the Patroclus and Achilles story, told from the former's POV) and found the voice in Circe too close to the Achilles voice. If they weren't both first person POV or if I hadn't read them so close together it might have worked better for me. Perhaps I'll try the full book again when it gets to my local library.

We get to meet a different but believable Odysseus in this novel, but that becomes secondary to the character of Circe, who was given a voice, a believable one, in this novel. Using Athena as a plot mover was a stretch though. The author could have used a number of devices that left Athena alone.

Literary Historical Fiction at its best. Can't wait to read more. Would like to see many more books from her to come, and planning on buying them soon as I am no longer broke! ;)

Excellent book so far, read the first couple of chapters in record time. If you love Greek mythology this is an easy captivating read.

This is a nicely written and very imaginative book. I enjoyed the vivid and colorfully descriptive language that came across diff and pacific.

I really liked the preview and I'm waiting patiently for the Kindle edition to go on sale.

My 9 and 12 year old girls LOVE this series! It is cute - it's like a comic book series with cute ("Kawai!", according to my girls) colorful drawings without any violence, telling the story of a mischievous little kitten. If you love comics, and love kittens, this is the book for you.I would definitely buy the entire collection, because my kids go through each book in about 15 mins. But why, of why, do they have to be SO EXPENSIVE?? you'd think you're buying a hardback, luxury model for that price. It's just a small paperback, less than 150 pages, nothing special.So I gave it 5 stars because the books are great. However, I think the size and quality of these books don't warrant the price.

The books are in full color and the chapters are kept short, so it's like reading the weekend comics from the newspaper! The only thing I didn't like was that the book was 'flopped', meaning it's been reprinted from it's right to left format (Japanese) to a left to right one (English). It however, doesn't bother me enough that I wouldn't buy the next volume!

We love all of the Chi Books, they are a great read for my son...he reads them over and over again!

If you get something that your kid likes to read, no better way to encourage them to read on a frequent basis. We are in process of completing the whole series.

Chi's new adventures brings in new friends, such as Cochi and Barks. This chapter marks the return of Blackie. Yaaay. Fun read.

I took the bar in another state previously so decided not to take a review course in MA. This book has some flaws. It does not provide convenient black letter law outlines, it does not list by year bar topics covered (though it has this information in a different format spread throughout the book), it does not fully answer all of the essay questions it puts forward, and it includes incorrect answers for some questions (i.e., includes an answer for a totally different question rather than the essay question posed). If this is the only way to practice essays, it's fine. If you're taking a bar review course, definitely skip it.
