Grade 2-5–This offbeat picture book blends facts with bits of quirky, occasionally amusing speculation. Beginning with the composer's birth in 1770 (the wild-haired infant cries to the tempo of his famed Fifth Symphony–Wah Wah Wah Wah), Winter reveals that the adult Beethoven lived in 39 different apartments in and around Vienna. If readers wonder why he relocated so often, the tongue-in-cheek text cites such reasons as forgetting to pay rent, the hideous stinky smell from a nearby cheese shop, and noise complaints from other residents. Beethoven brings his five legless pianos to each new abode, a constant headache for his movers, who always find the most roundabout and preposterously difficult way of transporting the instruments from place to place. Silly examples of evidence (e.g., we know that Beethoven played his pianos loudly because of the Hundreds of cotton balls with traces of dried earwax found in neighbors' homes) are mixed with nuggets of truth (the maestro's increasing deafness). The pen-and-ink and watercolor cartoon illustrations depict the frazzled-looking composer and play up the text's humor. Unfortunately, the joke begins to wear thin, and the abrupt, anticlimactic conclusion may disappoint readers who manage to stick with the book until the end. There is not much here to capture the interest of those unfamiliar with Beethoven's life and work. It's not clear who the audience is for this mock picture-book biography; Winter's wry send-up of scholars' pretentious attempts to document the "facts" about the situation is strictly for adults. But Blitt, who illustrated Geoffrey Kloske's Once Upon a Time, the End (2005), uses his line-and-watercolor cartoons to extend the great parody of the tormented-genius stereotype, and the picture-book crowd will surely relish the humor of the famous, noisy neighbor and the furniture movers schlepping all those pianos. I love this book! I bought this for my 4 year old son, and upon first reading the book myself, I thought it might be too long/too advanced to hold his interest yet. Boy was I wrong! He loves the story, loves the pictures, and loves the idea of the movers having to move all those pianos from place to place! He doesn't yet grasp the concept of what a composer is or that Beethoven was actually a real person, but as he does, I am sure that will only make the story more enjoyable for him! Heck, I like to read this myself! It is a great book, well written, with an engaging story line and illustrations. We read this every night before bed!

This book is fun, especially for a classical-music-lover like me, and beautifully illustrated. It would have been better to skip the academic/historical preambles, since it's just a silly kids book anyway ("It is believed that"/"the evidence indicates that", etc.) I often just skip those phrases when reading it to my son. Still really good and he likes it.

I teach middle school music and use this book to introduce the video "Beethoven Lives Upstairs" to my students. The text and illustrations wonderfully depict for students some of the idiosyncracies of the great composer. Much of the same ideas are then shown in the video through the eyes of a boy their same age. This book is a wonderful addition to anyone, young or old, wanting to learn insights about Ludwig vanBeethoven.

My 5 year old and I enjoy this book, it's funny, quirky and cute. It's not entirely factual, but that's obvious enough not to be confusing. Highly recommended as a way to "get to know" Beethoven without turning to Groves!

I got this because we love "The Garbage Barge"- but this is so made up it is a little confusing having to explain the actual history as opposed to what is in the book. The book negates actual history and the facts are barely on the surfacerather annoying. I wanted to teach my child about LVB and Vienna and music and apartment leases and eviction! What up with that?

This book begins with a musical score in Beethoven's own hand. The end papers are an actual photograph of Beethoven's working manuscript for the Grosse Fuge in B flat major, Op. 134.Jonah Winter recounts the story of Beethoven's pianos and the thirty-nine apartments where he lived in Vienna. So often children's "non-fiction" blurs the line between fact and speculation. Not so in this book. Winter clearly identifies what is fact and what is conjecture and does so with great humor.Diaries, eviction notices, physical evidence and piano movers' notes are used as a basis for the story he tells. Why did Ludwig change apartments so frequently? Well, there is some evidence to suggest the neighbors complained. As Beethoven moves from place to place, Winter chronicles the music that was composed there. An author's note at the end gives additional information about his deafness and the amazing fact that he composed his magnificent Ninth Symphony after he had completely lost his hearing.Barry Blitt's illustrations lift the story to a new level. We first see Beethoven as a baby crying in Gothic letters, "wha wha wha WHA." He accurately and humorously depicts the difficulties and incredible logistics involved in moving pianos to the new apartments, over rooftops, through windows and through walls. The composer's effect on his neighbors is depicted in a cross-section where we see the neighbors living above, below and next door to him reacting to the noise coming from his apartment in the middle. Babies cry, dogs bark and people pound on the floor, ceiling and walls as Beethoven plays.This book is a must have for music teachers, piano teachers and students of music. What a treat!

Barry Blitt's illustrations are drop-dead funny, with a cranky Beethoven juxtaposed with beautiful Viennese cityscapes on each page. (As you can tell from the cover illustration, Blitt's Beethoven looks just like the ubiquitous statuette of the great composer that glared down at you during weekly piano lessons.)"The 39 Apartments of Ludwig von Beethoven" begins with three facts. The first of these is:"FACT: Ludwig van Beethoven was born in the town of Bonn in the country of Germany in the year 1770."We then learn that Beethoven composed on five legless pianos and "FACT: Ludwig van Beethoven lived in 39 different apartments--which is of course the subject of our story. (See book title.)"Then the story begins. Beethoven's move from apartment to apartment is "documented" with complaints from neighbors, what he composed where, and details on how movers transported the five legless pianos. Here's a mover's lament:"In the diary of one Anselm Schwartz, we find the following translated here into modern English: 'After this move, I'm out of here. That dude is WHACKED in the head! Yow...My back is, like, REALLY messed up!'"After the first three FACTS of the book, there are only three to follow--two in the story of the moves: "FACT: It is very difficult to move a piano. FACT: It is even more difficult to move five pianos." These two FACTS are self-evident and are easily overlooked amongst the evidence of cotton balls with earwax found in neighbors' apartments.It's only when you read the last FACT on the final page that you get the joke: "FACT: That's all we know of the 39 apartments of Ludwig van Beethoven." In other words, absolutely nothing--but a good story results nonetheless."The 39 Apartments of Ludwig van Beethoven" is a stunner of a picture book and definitely makes my 2006 favorites list. I'm careful about awarding 5 stars, as a good book is nice but I want to have an option for a book that somehow excels. Even if I'm "bored", if I finish and give a review, stars will be given on the basis of the writer's skill, use of words, creativity: not my fascination. This deserves Five.Just prior, I finished a work that changed me. On receiving Kindle First options, I nearly declined to choose. There were only a couple poorly written reviews at the time for this memoir so I thought I might try to improve. Turned out to be a poor motive as, for the second time in a few weeks, I am so very moved.The mansion is in a land foreign to this American reader, and some words were of another language; yet the contrasts and changes that took place in Cinelle's young life and her character and fortitude are universal concepts. I wonder at her ability to weave her tale with such a gentle voice, at the same time thinking how much of her father's skill with words were learned or inherited. There are people in the world who live with a strength that inspires. There are some stories that need to be told. I'm thankful Ms Barnes shared hers. And I'm glad she seems to have made a peaceful and loving home.

This is one of the best, most interesting and well-written books I've ever read. Once I began reading it, I hated to stop . . . for anything. Through it, I learned quite a lot about the Philippine culture, and also about the strength of spirit and heart of one particular Philippine girl. I sincerely hope that Cinelle Barnes writes many more books. She is an exceptionally talented woman!

Barnes is in equal turns poetic, graphic, fantasical and gritty. She has bloomed from an exotic and chaotic childhood and adolescence into a gifted author. Her story so mesmerized me I read it in one day.

Every month I dive into a Prime Kindle Pick, and more often than not, I climb back out early, wet and a little cold. This month, the memoir Monsoon Mansion flooded me, lulled me into another time and place with beauty and horrors, and refused to let me go. Not that I wanted to leave.Why do we read memoirs? Obviously not just to learn facts about the authors, but to share a tightly focused, distilled experience that they offer up as meaningful, something that challenged them and left their hearts, minds, and world view changed, and out of a hope we will be changed, too. I have only one life to live. Good memoirs let me climb inside the skin of another and hopefully see myself and the world with fresh eyes.Cinelle Barnes has allowed me to climb into her skin in her debut book. With a painter’s eye and deft language (multiple languages at times) she illustrates the wealth and poverty, the lush beauty and crushing horror of her personal life in the Philippines, in a house known as Mansion Royale, with her entrepreneurial Papa, her manic fashionista Mama, and her older brother. I watched helpless through the eyes of a small girl while the Mansion and the family took on various forms as fortunes and politics and seasons whirled around them. I was left thinking there must be so much more to the story than what we are told, more wealth and more loss, more fear and heartbreak. I wondered at the author’s ability to care about her family after everything she has endured (although is that not the nature of families?). But I never wondered at her ability to survive.In her book “The Art of Memoir,” Mary Kerr said, “Writing, regardless of the end result—whether good or bad, published or not, well reviewed or slammed—means celebrating beauty in an often ugly world.” With her debut book, Cinelle Barnes has done just that. Not only is it a good memoir, it is artfully told with the writing balancing between the hopeful song of a child, the knowing lament of a survivor, and the literary polish of a craftswoman.

This was a very enjoyable read from start to finish. Now I say enjoyable but the story itself is disturbing on many levels. The story of children neglected and mistreated for example is never fun to read about. But this memoir by Cinelle Barnes reveals the underlying strengths of the human spirit and a faith that can be strengthened even in the most difficult of circumstances and even in a young child. The setting, timeline, characters and story line are well-developed by a very talented writer. I feel blessed to have discovered this jewell. Thank you Cinelle Barnes for publishing your memoir.

A promising life story from a relatively young writer who shares the story of her childhood and how her family life quickly slipped from one of privilege to struggle and survival. Worth reading if you like stories of overcoming adversity and for a small look at life in the Philippines during the '90s. However, the disappointing aspect of the book is that it feels rather incomplete at times. The author skims over some events that likely were difficult to remember, or too tragic to want to relive. The ending is somewhat unsatisfying as well, only because as a reader I wanted to know more about how she escaped her situation, what happened during the in-between time, whether she ever reunited or came to have a relationship with either parent, and how she made her way to the U.S. as an adult.

This is a beautifully written story of triumph over adversity. Sad and haunting story of parental love and imperfection. Set in the Philippines of the author’s childhood, the wonder, awe, and terror of time and place are painted through the eyes of this brave and resilient child. A great read.

As a child of the 80's and 90's it never ceases to amaze me what was going on in the world around me that I was completely unaware of. This memoir from Cinelle Barnes is a maze of misfortune and sheer preservation as she grows up going from extremely wealthy to extremely poor with her mother, father, brother and other key people in her life.

You see a lot of dentists lure you in with some trade secret and then be extremely vague as to not give away how to replicate their success. Dr. Addison does an incredible job laying out step by step how to evaluate practices based upon their analytics. I am taking medical billing and coding and the medical terminology wasn't covered very well in the course. I found it more confusing then anything. I purchased this book and I have made my way through 2 chapters now and wow I am remembering this. I wouldn't get this book for a full course on medical terminology as it is just a basic, quick overview. The body systems are just a couple of pages in the appendix of the book and not really focused on much. Overall, this book has helped medical terminology understandable.

I have the Kindle version of this book and I can't see part of the page. This is like this for every page. Its cut off on the right side.I have it zoomed out as far as it will go and the page columns as narrow as possible.Not sure if it's the apps fault or the e-book itself, but I need this fixed!

I like that you can write in this book like a workbook. I thought it was going to be something like a dictionary but it’s not. Through every chapter most of the terms are repeated for extra exposure. I passed my med term class with a 98 because of this book.

I learned a little history about places I'd seen, but knew anything about.The photographs were a great addition, beautiful and clear. The small tidbits of information made it just a bit more personal. I have recommended it to friends who are making a journey to the,"City" and can't wait to go back and treasure hunt these places out.

I am Native New Yorker & learned so many new places. I had the book laying on my shelf and another local browsed & loved it so I gave it as a gift—now I need to buy another!!!

Disappointed. Am in NYC as I write this. The Chaim Gross Village Studio doorbell went unanswered (on a Friday after 1pm). I couldn't find the Microcosm down the dark Cortlandt Alley. And no sign of the Berlin Wall segment in Midtown. I guess it's time to update the book.

I'm going to buy it for everyone on my team and the senior management at my company (along with Julie Morgenstern's 'Never Check Email in the Morning', a more clinical approach). Joe encourages the blasphemous idea of putting ourselves and our lives first, which in turn has a positive impact on our work productivity and health. My inner dialogue has already changed dramatically at work and I'm not even done with the book. Brilliant!

I decided last year that I would like to learn the Spanish language. Like many such wishes, this one has fallen victim to a lack of time... But now there is a wonderful motivational book on making time for such things -- and for our families and communities. Joe Robinson's "Work to Live: The Guide to Getting a Life" ... pulls out all the stops, from the stories to the numbers, in making the case for less work and more time, tells us how to do this personally, and ends with a roadmap for achieving legislation making a few weeks of vacation each year a right. I finally found the time to read Mr. Robinson's book Work to Live. But, it isn't because I've been working. Au contraire. I quit my job in August 2002 to go answer a few questions I had about life, and to make a life change (I don't like that word career). While I've been back for 5 months as of this review, that was after 7 months straight of traveling Asia (Thailand, India, Nepal, Indonesia, Singapore, among others), and a loop around Australia, and parts of Arabia. That was a follow up to 3 months driving around the US, 6 weeks in S. America (Rio Carnaval!), and 3 weeks in China & Taiwan. I'll be on the road again soon! My change in life was fueled by personal events and only reconfirmed by Sept.11th. I may not have quit if I had more time off (Though I am vey glad I did in retrospect!). Our antiquated vacations laws are something I became consciously aware of (And mad!) when I traveled to Europe for business or when I met fellow travelers in other places.In the eye of the storm, it is difficult to see the truth. And that is what applies to the masses of the USA in regards to work. We can't see the forest for the trees. Mr. Robinson discusses so many ideas that I have come to on my own - including the distortions of our productivity reporting. I may someday write a book that takes these ideas even further.So many "difficulties" our country faces are ripple effects from our lack of time to see the big picture. On this fact alone, Mr. Robinson's work is in my list as one of the most important books of the present for Americans. Read it!In the book Mr. Robinson quotes Hewitt Associates a number of times. Hewitt is the #1 benefits consultant in the US (World?). They have a reputation as a great place to work. So much so that supposedly they were no longer ranked, they were consultants to the "Best Companies to Work For" list. Funny thing is, I worked there for 9 months in 1997 as a system consultant and there was a very high employee churn rate. Of the 6 people that interviewed me (One a company veteran of almost 20 years and my mgr), all but 1 were gone within a year of my leaving. One of the reasons - they counted face time, not productivity. It was a pressure cooker for hours, it was like a cult. Maybe it has changed. I doubt it. I even have a PDF comparison chart of vacation time that Hewitt posted on their website not long ago!I agree with almost everything Mr. Robinson is talking about. I just think he could have cut the book by 25-33% to get the same point across. The first half of the book especially just seemed to be a rehash of the same thing over and over. The 2nd half of the book is more concise.

This is a must-read for all Americans! Because most Americans work too much and have very little vacation, they are stressed out, eat too much junk food, don't get enough sleep, have very little leisure time, rarely see their friends, and have little time for their spouse, children and pets! Joe Robinson is trying to get ALL Americans a minimum of 3 weeks paid vacation per year (Europeans and Australians get 4-6 weeks by law, while Americans get ZERO). In this book, Joe shows you how to work less and get more vacation time! He also talks about how we are constantly busy and don't know how to slow down. There's a lot to learn in this book!

Highly recommended. Our workaholic-fueled corporate world pressures us to live in a way completely inconsistent with our own best interests. This is in stark contrast to the European model of healthy balance between work and leisure. This is a subversive book - read it! Join the campaign.

I am going to keep this brief. Joe Robinson's book needs to be read by every person who has ever worked a day in America. This is an important and overlooked issue, and Robinson is the forerunner in the field. If you have ever felt work-related angst, pick up "Work to Live", and change the way things work. Pun intended.
