And it is definitely not her fault that she livedin these times.I also believed for a long time that Riefenstahl produced propaganda movies forthe Nazis including hate speeches and incitation to aggressive wars. But everybodywho has seen her notorious movie "Triumph of the Will" knows that there Hitler preaches:"We want that this nation will be peace-loving but also brave, thats why you must bepeaceful". Therefore the french government awarded this movie a "Grand Prix" duringthe world fair 1937 in Paris.And seven trials, one american, two french and four german, revealed that she wasnever member of any Nazi organisation. To those, who still continue bashing LeniRiefenstahl, I just want to say that they also cannot forsee the future. And they arealso incapable of remote viewing what happens in some concentration camps hundreds ofmiles away, which were, as everybody knows, not accessible to the public.This book is as fascinating as her olympic movies. Although I like to go to bed veryearly I could not stop reading before 3:00 am. During breakfast I had to continuereading. It shows clearly that Riefenstahl was an extraordinary strong personality.Thats why she never gave excuses for crimes that she never commited, although a lot ofpressure was put on her in that direction. For this I tribute her lots of respect.I am pretty much more concerned about those germans with weak moral, which believedin the past to be a member of a superior race, while today they feel guiltyfor crimes that they never commited, because they were not alive those times.What kind of madness will originate from these delicate personalities in the future?Another aspect: through Riefenstahls eyes it becomes discernible that the Nazi leaderswere a bizarre clique of gamblers and bohemiens.But those, who read in between the lines of her memoirs, realize that Leni Riefenstahlhad not only an extremly strong will but also narcissistic traces in her character.As a young girl she wanted to be admired as a dancer. Concerning men she decided tocontrol them always. Whenever necessary she twisted them around her little fingerand used them for her ambitions as an artist, which were the main motor of her live.But her movies demonstrate clearly that she had a positive attitude towards men.Everybody, who experienced as a forty year old man that a hundred year old ladyappeared to him interesting as a woman believes the following episode of her memoirs.He also knows how she made it. 1936, in the olympic stadium, seen by all thespectators, the winner of the decathlon Morris (USA) opened her shirt and kissed herbreast. Nazi propaganda minister Goebbels wanted to throw her out of the stadiumbecause of her scandalous behavior. This is typical of Riefenstahl: the king ofathlets must be captivated in the public and no thought about the consequences.In german newspapers there are still rumours from hearsay that around 1937 Riefenstahlconfessed, Hitler has been kneeling in front of her and was asking her with wet handsfor marriage. But without these properties Riefenstahl would have never become the mostingenious female movie maker of the 20th century. And which man was able to match her?Absolutley: this is a five star book. But one star I withdraw from Leni Riefenstahl asa sign of solidarity with some of the men she used. For instance the ingenious pioneerof mountain movies and avantgardistic nature movie maker Dr. Arnold Fanck, the creator ofthe breathtaking silent film "The white hell of Piz Palu".

Leni Riefenstahl should be held up as a role model for young women. She proved in so many ways that she embodied the qualities that are generally expected to be found in role models: courageous, dedicated, persevering, diligent, intelligent, athletic, dynamic. The list could go on for pages. Instead, she has been reviled, stigmatized, vilified, and betrayed over and over for a large part of her life and all because she was chosen by Hitler to make a couple of films for him and the Third Reich. She didn't seek the job or particularly want the job. However, when you live and work in Nazi Germany and der Fuehrer taps you on the shoulder and asks you to do a job, what can you do? Especially, when he tells you he will provide you with all the equipment, materials, and manpower and give you pretty much a free hand in making the film. The irony of it is that Riefenstahl never seemed to have any interest or use for politics unless it impinged on her ability to continue her work.The book is written in her simple, straightforward style without a touch of bitterness or self pity, which is an amazing feat in itself considering what she had to endure over many years. We are fortunate that she lived long enough to complete her autobiography and set the record straight.

A well written book. Not a fan of autobiographies but this is an acception. I loved how she told about all her aspects of her life before during and after WW2. She changed film making so much and is such an under known historical person. Give this book a chance.

Amazing memoir... Incredible woman... Her life would provide material for 20 movies... I can't believe I didn't know about Leni Riefenstahl before. This book is a keeper.

It turns out that Leni R. is not only a great filmmaker, but a great writer. I found myself fascinated by this woman's triumphs and struggles, and saddened by the persecution of her that continued to the day of her death. There's something for everyone in this book, For 'creative people' you will find her insights fascinating....for the armchair adventurer, her travels to Greenland and Africa read like hemingway....the blurb on my addition says "coulnd't put it down' for once a book lived up to its expectations. Side note:One of the great tragedies of the filmmaking is that this woman was essentially blacklisted after 1945 - and the hypocrisy of the people who do it and simulataneously heap praise on Sergi Eisentien (supporter of stalin) is appauling.

Endless, but fascinating. If you want Leni from Leni, then of course you have to read this.

Incredible, the insight she gives into the making of films before and during WWII. The trials and tribulations actors and film-makers endured is described in such detail that one can imagine being there.The book is art, absolute art, all the way through, no matter what Riefenstahl describes. I especially loved the beginning of the book, the description of her childhood. It is so totally German. The customs, the sentiments, the feelings she describes returned me to the stories my mother and grandmother told me, and to many of my own childhood memories.After reading her book, I believe that she has been deliberately maligned and that she was always only an artist, not ever a collaborator of Hitler.I especially recommend the book to anyone who loves the art of film-making.

An excellent book! Very interesting, trying to understand this creative, atistic, energetic personality. It is a sad outcome that the war ruined her great abilities/gift she had to offer our world/society. What she could have accomplished had the war not interfered. Loved the ability this book gave me to try and understand the time period: the different views on what people were experiencing through all these changes in our world. One person's experiences in Germany from the 1920's through today, from the view of the filmmaking industry just beginning to grow. So VERY INTERESTING! Again, a SUPER GREAT READ. A very detailed guide for pruning and training for the prospective olive orchard owner and the current owners. As much as it is detailed, it is not addressed only to the agricultural professional - not boring you out with unfamiliar, academical phrases. Highly recommend it.

A most helpful and enlightening book. The technical and complex subject is made accessible and logical. It is erudite without being pretentious, and instructive without being dogmatic. A most useful work for the average olive farmer to have at his hand.

I bought this book primarily for the few pages on pruning to renew an old orchard. What I saw was pretty radical, but it might be just what I need for my orchard of 100 year old olive trees. Time will tell. I'll get back to you then.

It will make more sense if the author provided weather zones. For example, it would have been helpful if a table was included that shows: 4 or 5 different regions, elevation, temperature during cultivation, etc. if I am from a different part of the world I can compare my data to a certain region in Italy.

This is not a tour guide nor is it a story of what to see in Bangkok if you go. But if you do go you will want to read it and maybe even have it with you. It is a deep dive into the world of the expat in Bangkok and how the city is seen from that perspective. But, the author does love the city and he shows his understanding through the comments he makes about the average Thai people encountered in his sojourn there. A very striking book.

Took up this book after reading his fascinating tale of the gambling scene in Macao.Can't think of any other author writing about south east Asia in such detail and with such authenticity. There is a weak point to Bangkok Days in that it just sort of peters out at the end. If something was resolved I missed itAnother aspect is it is a singular tutorial on Asian religious beliefs

This book is not so much about Bangkok as it is about how to survive soul-crushing loneliness. But the writing is superb.

The author's language is rich and imaginative. This is a rather disjointed collection of travel diaries which was a pleasure to delve into. There were at least a few insights worth highlighting for my future references.

Depressing

I visited Bangkok for the first time only weeks before reading this book, and really enjoyed following the adventures of Lawrence Osbourne in a small underworld community of foreign transplants to Bangkok. It's a travelogue, and nothing too momentous happens, but the sights, sounds, impressions, are beautifully narrated. I particularly enjoyed the naked honesty and self-irony Osbourne employs in describing some truly awkward moments. I laughed out loud many times, but also felt sad, engaged, and provoked at different times throughout this thoughtful story.

Through a weave of various stories, I received information about Bangkok and its interconnected streets and "citizens." I'm not sure if I liked the writing or the information I gathered since I am heading to Thailand.

I lived in Peru for many years and Kim Macquarrie's book "The Last Days of the Incas" was my constant reference book during that time period.Needless to say, I was ecstatic to learn of his writing "Life and Death in the Andes" and pre-ordered many months before the release on December 1st. I've been glued to the book since.Kim has the ability to share so much knowledge and detail on cultural, historical, anthropological, geographical, environmental, etc aspects but in a way that leaves you not wanting to put the book down and as if you are along on a great adventure story. He is not only a leading authority on all things South American, but a true adventurer as well,so his descriptions are amazing and keep you turning pages but at the same time learning so, so much.This book reminds me a lot of a few of my other favorite books on South America; "One River" by Wade Davis, and "Running the Amazon" and "Savages" by author Joe Kane. But if I was headed to South America and was to take along just one, it would be "Life and Death in the Andes" due to the scope and variety of stories contained within.A must buy book for anyone interested in South America, adventure, history, cultures..the list goes on!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book---and I learned a lot!This well-researched book was very informative on many events that had occurred in South America that I knew very little about. I found the details of how the Shining Path, a terrorist group in Peru, and the biggest drug cartel of Medallin in Columbia, developed and ended. I also liked reading about Darwin and how he came about with his ground-breaking ideas of evolution. I truly want to visit the Galapagos Islands some day! WOW! I didn't know about the floating islands and the lifestyle on Lake Titicaca.The intelligence of the author came through many times and especially with his discussion of Kon Tiki and the theories that surrounded the exploration done by Thor Heyderdahl. Who influenced who? The natives from South America visiting the Polynesian Islands or the Polynesians coming the South America.?This is a well-written book, easy to read and understand and I recommend it.

What a super super book. I went to Peru first in '09 and then went back again and this time included Boliva in Oct. 2015. I read MacQuarrie's The Last Days of the Incas after fist trip. That should be required reading for any and all going to Machu Picchu. This book should be required of anyone going other areas of Peru and to Bolivia. I have been to many of the places he covered and really enjoyed re-living my experience. We did get to see the Ice Maiden of Ampato in her current resting place in Arequipa. Cusco is my most favorite city which was not on the itinerary for latest trip. Sorry that I have not been to the Center for Traditional Textiles. Maybe reason for another trip there. There is a similar place in Bolivia. We also got meet and talk with Paulino Esteban - what an experience and so glad he is in this book. I thought I learned much on my trips but MacQuarrie gave me so much more. I am recommending it to the group on the Oct. trip and other like-minded friends. The histories and cultures of all these South American countries are so deep and varied and fascinating. I only hope MacQuarrie keeps traveling and writing.

I loved Kim's book about the last days of the Incas, I read it after my first big international trip. I went to Peru and it filled in lots of gaps for me, made me want to go back again one day.I was so excited for this book to come out, seemed right up my alley. It's basically 9 or so short articles about interesting things in South American history. It's very well written, you can feel the passion he has for that part of the world. It will make you want to buy a new book after each chapter. He lightly delves Into these stories so you'll probably want to go on and do some more research after you finish. I can't think of a better way to recommend a book. You'll read it and be thirsty for more.The only gripe I have is: I think it could have been a great travelogue as well. I would have loved a few paragraphs here and there about the actual road trip down the west coast of the continent. he could have tied things together really well and made a masterpiece. But, that's a small gripe. I loved this book and I hope Kim keeps writing.

Excellent book. Beautifully written. I read slowly, savoring, and was sad the book ended, which I think, is always the ultimate compliment - wishing a book wouldn't end. For such a large subject, spread across a continent, Life and Death in the Andes is an intimate book. The author gracefully juggles a crosscutting of history - both ancient and recent - along with memoir. No easy task. But MacQuarrie does it masterfully, breathing life into history's characters along the way. A wonderful read. Highly recommended.

Excellent! I bought this title as a way of beginning exploration of South America where I am hoping to travel in the near future. I picked this particular book due to the fact that it integrates a geographical place with some of it's history, prominent events or people as well as including the present experience of the author as he traces in the same footsteps. I am partial to Tony Horwitz books for the same reason. I was sorry when the book ended.

Yet another wonder book from Kim. A collection of stories from South America. I learnt so much from all of them You must check out last days of the Inca too. Its AMAZING!

My husband and I are going to Scotland this summer for two weeks, and I wanted to have a beautiful map of Scotland on the wall to see as I'm planning our trip and to have as a gorgeous keepsake on the wall. I purchased a frame for it and it is beautiful. The colors are muted and look vintage on the wall, and it is such a large map that I can really see all the little towns and lochs everywhere. The only drawback for the map is that it is not standard frame size, so you have to get a custom sized frame or use a make your own frame kit. Overall, this map is gorgeous and a perfect keepsake for planning a trip to Scotland!

It was shipped in a tube. It's 30" x 36" (not standard poster size). It is not coated (another review said it is). I ended up mounting it to black foam board before hanging it on the wall. It looks great in our "Scottish" themed guest room.

Beautiful map. This is my second NG Executive map. It is frame worthy, for sure. I'll try to update with a photo once framed.

I bought this map for my sister for a present. She's been doing genealogy work and traced many of our ancestors back to Scotland. The map had a lot of extra room for me to make a lot of notes and then draw lines to the towns I was referring to. She loved it.

This is a high quality map--good paper, lovely print quality, and it arrives in a clear presentation tube suitable for gifting. I am using it for doing family history research and have found it accurate and informative.

I bought a few Irish, Celtic, or Fairy tale books to read to my child and this was one of them. I wanted something unique instead of the usual children's story book you would find and it delivers. It has very imaginative stories that entertain both him and myself.

Fun book of Irish Fairy tales that a non-Irish person probably has never heard. Easy to read and understand. Not for little children, but perhaps older youth.

I use these books for prizes/awards for youth in my Youth Storytelling classes and events. The size and content is just perfect for them. The price is great for purchasing for many youth.

Being of Irish decent, I was able to identify with some of these tales. Of course there are stories of Leperchans, but there are others too. A great complmentary book to Grimm's and Jewish Fairy Tales.

I like these types of books with obscure stories never made into movies. They are good for young readers and lovers of Fairy Tales alike.

Dover is great. We've gotten multiple books from their Children's thrift classics for our kids. The stories are top notch and the price is so affordable. A wonderful bargain all around.

My kids have really enjoyed this book.
