My rating is for the Kindle version only. I have used this book for years in paper and would give it five stars. It's excellent. But I found the Kindle version difficult to use. I searched the word "handsome" and expected to be taken to the main entry where I could and read the synonyms. No luck. Instead, it found the word in other entries and did not permit me to turn pages to find the main entry. Buy it in paper. The paper version is superior to Roget's in that one need only look up the word alphabetically. With Roget it's a two-step process.

Not only an extremely, awfully, terribly functional, operative opus, opuscule, work or tome, but also a handy and serviceable one. Avail oneself of, utilize, apply and put to use this most excellent, masterly, well-executed volume. Advantageous and beneficial: use to good advantage. I have the Webster Thesaurus as well and use them in conjunction. Can't tell which is the better, frankly, because the other will invariably, inevitably, inexorably bring up some alternatives. Great for any writer. Easy to use on your kindle. Just search for a word. I love it.

Useless on Kindle. Great resource in print, but there's no practical way to find the word you're looking for on the Kindle. Very disappointing.

The book version of this book is perfect, thus the 5 stars.The Kindle version is useless. There is no way to go directly to a word you wish to find the synonym of; thus the desire to give only 1 star.First you have to go to the section of the book beginning with the first letter of the word you wish to look up, for example, delta. There is a list to first letters, so you click on d, the first letter of delta. Now you have to page through all the words before delta to find delta.You could use the search function, but you will come up with every word that has delta as a synonym. Then you have to page through that list to find the entry for delta.So why didn't I vent my anger with the Kindle version by giving a rating of 1? The simple reason is the physical book is better than any other synonym book I have ever tried to use. It really is the best and deserves 5 stars.Get the physical book!

This thing is massive, and more comprehensive than any other resource I've seen. At more than two-and-a-half inches thick, it dwarfs other volumes in the thesaurus reference genre. Where other books have many missing entries, a cursory search after this arrived leads me to conclude that this will answer my child's needs. My only complaint is that I couldn't find it available for purchase in a more durable hard cover format with acid-free pages.

If you use your thesaurus primarily to find synonyms, as many people do, then Rodale's 'The Synonym Finder' is hard to beat. In fact, I find it indispensable. I've been getting paid for my writing since the late 1970s, and a copy of 'The Synonym Finder' has been on my desk since the late 1980s. Comprehensive to a fault, the back cover claims more than one million synonyms can be found inside. And I can't argue with that. At more than 1,300 pages in an easy-to-read dictionary format, this book gets a lot of attention from me. I have nothing against Roget. The numerous variations all have good, solid word choices and other info. But if you simply need a synonym, Rodale will usually give you more choices, often in more contexts.The only issue I have with Rodale -- and the reason I deduct one star -- is that it is dire need of an update. Both of my copies (hardcover and paperback) are from 1986. Isn't it about time for someone to give it a facelift?

In the world of digital this and that, it's great to see a book get a nod toward essential equipment in my writing. No buttons to press in error, just look it up and observe the options. The only downside is one must be able to spell. To those would-be authors who skipped out on spelling, or rely on the computer to auto-correct your errors, this book is not for you. It is a fantastic addition, however to my essential writing library.

Being a person these days is pretty tough. I think that we live in a world where we are under a lot of pressure to Work Very Hard, All The Time, so that we can Be Amazing in a way that seems Almost Effortless. This pressure builds, over time, similar to how our closets and the spaces under our beds, and bottom desk drawers just get full. We don't want to be judged, and we are always worried we are being judged. And we feel alone in this, we feel like we are the only person who could possibly be secretly broken. Everyone else has these wonderful instagram photographs of themselves, see, where they're standing outside of an ice cream shop smiling, perfectly filtered and perfectly happy.And here is where Heather Havrilesky comes in. For years she has been someone you could write to to ask about why you are increasingly falling apart in different ways, and she would take these letters and pick some that seemed somehow more universal, and then she would write columns giving out advice that tends to boil down to: "hey, it's ok, it's ok to be you, the real you." And she's written this book here, which is full of important things that people should know. And it's one of those books where you will read a chapter, or even a few paragraphs, and then you'll have to stop and put the book down on your chest (this book is very good for reading while lying down, late at night) and stare up at the ceiling and you will think "oh gosh, gosh gosh, that is an important thing for me to have read, that is a good way of putting that complicated emotion that I have inside me." And you might be one of those people who has a pencil on their nightstand and you will underline a sentence or two. And slowly, slowly, while reading a book like this, you will come to understand yourself, or your loved ones, or even your acquaintances a little better. Which is what we need in this increasingly terrifying world. We just need to understand that we're all swimming in the same dark, open ocean.Buy this book! It's got good things inside of it. And you have good things inside of you, too! And this book will help you perhaps realize that.

I've never read "ask Polly" before, but I bought his book after hearing about it on NPR. It's amazing! I love the straight-talk that's so far from the wishy-washy "but how do *you* feel??" response that is so common when asking for advice. Her internal voice, which she references often, is very relatable and gives the reader many "wait...so I'm not the only one who thinks that?" moments. She shares grown-up perspectives without being preachy, and stresses the importance of forgiving yourself for being human while also challenging yourself to be better. It's in Q/A format and though I couldn't relate to all of the questions I read them anyway because the responses are so good. Take the plunge and buy it - Your day will be better after reading this book.

I bought this book on a whim. Was not familiar with the author. I'm a middle-aged woman, not exactly the target audience, I don't think, but am loving this book so hard. Ms. Havrilesky gives out a unique blend of wise and no-BS advice. I wish I could have read this in my youth. This may sound like hyperbole, but - it would have been life-changing. I plan to give this book to my 20 yr old daughter when I'm done with it.

Ask Polly is the highlight of my Wednesday-- I have columns bookmarked and text docs with my favorite quotes. I am in the middle of a break up with tepid MF-er #16 and if it weren't for Polly I probably wouldn't have the resolve to do it. She is the aunt you never had but so desperately need. The Kanye column is what hooked me - so glad it's in there (although the Yes guitarist column is 💯💯💯💯). I recommend it to all of my friends but haven't lent it out because I keep re-reading it.

I am a huge Ask Polly fan and this book does not disappoint. It is about 75% new material and oh boy, is it good. It has a few of my old favorites that I go back and reread regularly (What Would Kanye Do?) but the new stuff is just as fantastic as the previous stuff.This advice column has honestly changed my life over the last 18 months and this book gives me the feels because it is As Polly at its finest, and then some.I bought the hardcover because it's a book I can see myself reading again and again.

I love reading advice columns, so this book is right up my alley. She mostly tries to get her letter writers to be consciously aware of their own viewpoints, and for the most part stays away from prescribing cures to their problems.One piece I did take issue with involves a LW who is grieving their father and whose mother thinks they should be over it by now. HH wants to believe the best about the mother but without knowing the family more, her advice might just be even more hurt. There are toxic people, there are narcissists, and I have personal experience with both.That said, the end piece is a lovely little thing. It made me smile.

I love it. I want to share it. If you're stuck or sad or just not sure how to do the "life" or "human interaction" things that it seems like everyone else manages effortlessly, read these lovely essays that feel like they're for you even though they're answering someone with seemingly different issues. Start from the beginning, or open at random. Savor.

I am obsessed with Ask Polly’s weekly column in The Cut, so I was thrilled to find out I could get my Ask Polly fix in a book. Heather Havrilesky is a superb writer with cutting, insightful, funny, honest, empathetic advice that will warm your heart and make you laugh. Even on topics completely irrelevant to my life, I’m able to find something relatable in Polly’s advice. Since buying this book I’ve practically become an Ask Polly disciple, trying to get all my friends to read this book and partake in her wisdom as well.

I have seen a few comments/questions regarding what is included with this textbook. I am hoping I can clear up some confusion. I just received the "Human Anatomy & Physiology, Books a la Carte Plus MasteringA&P with eText -- Access Card Package (9th Edition)". This package came with the Human Anatomy & Physiology textbook, A Brief Atlas of the Human Body, Interactive Physiology 10-System Suite (CD ROM), and the Student Access Code for Mastering A&P. If you need the whole package, this is the one to order. Also, it is important to note that the textbook comes 3-holed punched and you will have to put the pages in a 3-ringed binder. This book does not have a binding. I personally like this idea because if I know that we are going to be working on chapters 2 and 3 in class, then I only have to bring chapters 2 and 3 to class. I don't have to lug around the whole book. Also, it might be important to note that I ordered this book directly from Amazon and not from someone who is using Amazon to sell their book.If you order the hardcover book, you will only receive the textbook. The hardcover book (at the time of this review) does not come with the Atlas, CD ROM, or the Access Code.When you read reviews, make sure to look at the review carefully to see exactly which book/package is being reviewed. When you look at the reviews for "Human Anatomy & Physiology" it will show reviews from people who received the hardcover book, the kindle book, and the 3-holed punched book. These reviews are all mixed together. The review will tell you exactly which book/package is being reviewed. Personally I think this makes it very confusing but if you look carefully you will find the information you need.UPDATE as of 1/30/2013I have just noticed that Amazon is now selling a loose leaf edition without the full package. If it doesn't list "Mastering A&P with eText - Access Card Package" in the title then you are not going to receive the full package. Also, it seems like Amazon is making it more difficult to actually find this full package. Overall I do like that I can take a few chapters to class versus taking the whole book. Its much lighter and I enjoy that. The only bad thing I have found about having the loose leaf version is that you have to be more careful with the pages. The whole book is 3 holed punched and needs to be put in a 3 ring binder. When turning the pages, if you aren't careful, you can tear one or two of the holes on a page. It's usually nothing a little tape couldn't correct but if you are the kind of person who is rough on their books, turns pages aggressively, throws their books across the room, then you might want to invest in the hard cover book.

I'm a professor at a university and have found this book to be a excellent resource for an Anatomy course (for the Anatomy course at the Graduate School Level -- actually the School of Medicine). This book does an excellent job explaining the content and follows a logical sequence for the students. The tables and illustrations are excellent. From a students view, I'm confident you'll find this book to be thorough and provides an excellent foundation to build your understanding of Anatomy.One downside to the book is the thinnest of the pages. The pages remind me of the type of paper used in a magazine. If your a person that uses a highlighter, you'll find that a regular highlighter will "bleed" through the pages. I would recommend possiblely a Bible highlighter even though it's not the best solution. The "magazine" type paper used in this book is "shiny" and the Bible highlighters I've found don't really grab onto the paper as well as it would probably in a bible but it's better than a regular highlighter "bleeding" through the page. That's the only downside I can say about this book. The content far exceeds anything else. I just thought of the possibility of using highlighter tape (since I just thought of that possibility, I'm not sure of the cost factor for the tape -- I completely understand that being a major factor when your already buying extremely high priced textbooks).

I purchased this book a few semesters ago and it is a great text book. This text book you will want to keep for future references.With that said.. Do yourself a favour and just get the past edition. I returned my 9th edition. I just do not see the justification to charge someone almost $200 for a new book when the previous edition is almost the exact same, with just replacing of pictures. The 8th Edition can be purchased for less than $15 bucks here on amazon (ISBN-10: 0805395695 ).I am pretty certain that most college students are pretty much on the verge of being broke, or soon to be for that matter. Always try to get the previous edition if you can, your save a lot of money, around 1/5 the price. These publishers just drive me nuts, I understand they need to make money, but come on, most of these books are never completely rewritten and they come out with a new edition every 2-3 years and those editions like this one, are almost exactly the same, except for replacement of pictures and a few updated stories/examples. It seems crazy how a book that is just two years old seems to be considered no longer usable.--*Update*: For most A&P students, your cover the first chapter all the way to the nervous system. In A&P II your probably start with the Endocrine System.Your professor may require you to get Mastering A & P. This requires that you use a on-line website that allows you to take some tests, quizzes and other exams. Getting the older book, will save you money, so you will be able to purchase the other software. The access code is $55, if you want the eText/eBook included, then it is $110 and that will include the 9th edition. The My Mastering A & P website, is good for 1 year. If you take AP1 in spring, you will still be able to use your Mastering A & P on the same access code if you take AP2 in the fall.Do not be fooled by changed pictures or rearrangement of chapters. Seriously, the human body has not changed in the past two years. We still have the same muscles and bones and, yes the kidneys still filter plasma. ;)

My package included the Brief Atlas, Access Code Card, 10 System Suite CD Rom and Loose Leaf book. I called my school to verify that the access code card as infact the only one I need because the ISBN numbers didn't match. They said YES. So through Amazon I paid $136 (no tax and free shipping) for all the bundle but through the school it would of been $272 plus tax and shipping.Thank you amazon, and it did arrive almost exactly 48hrs from when I ordered lol. (actually a few hours early :)

It took me a while but I finally finished Donald Kraybill's The Upside-Down Kingdom. Kraybill is Distinguished College Professor, and Senior Fellow of Young Center for Anabaptist and Pietist Studies at Elizabethtown College in Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania, which is a pretty impressive title, at least for its length, and one of the foremost experts on Anabaptism and especially the Amish in the world. The Upside-Down Kingdom (UPK for short) is not a book on Anabaptism per se but rather a look at the way that Christ's Kingdom is in every respect the exact opposite of what the world values. Up is down, great is least.UPK is a fascinating book and challenging to boot. Some of the background information that Kraybill shares is absolutely incredible and really fleshes out portions of Scripture. He does a great job of drawing out from Scripture some crucial points regarding status, power, wealth, etc. that we take for granted and showing the reader where we have strayed far from the intent of Scripture. It is a pretty devastating indictment of our traditional church culture in the West and should make any open-minded Christian ask some serious questions and take a deep introspective look. There are a few slow points but the book as a whole flows beautifully and reads easily while still be meaty.That isn't to say that I don't have concerns. I do with every book but UPK has some issues that are especially concerning. First Kraybill seems pretty comfortable with traditional church structures. He certainly has criticisms of them but he seems to miss in places that the very traditions we cling to in many ways hamper living as citizens of the Upside-Down Kingdom. He also takes great liberties in assigning motivations and emotions, especially to Christ, that are absent from the text. What Jesus, the eternal God, is thinking in a situation is not a topic I am comfortable making definitive statements about.My bigger concern has to do with how Christ is represented and how His cross is understood. The language about the deity of Christ and the relationship between God the Father and God the Son is a bit sloppy and imprecise. Someone could read this book and perhaps get the impression that God is the Father is God and that Jesus is something less than God. His treatment of the cross is even more troubling. Statements like this for example... "...Jesus demolished the entire sacrificial system when he announced full forgiveness, direct from God - any time, any place without a bloody sacrifice." (The Upside-Down Kingdom, pg. 248)Kraybill seems to be saying that the sacrificial system was overturned symbolically and finally when Jesus overturned the money changers tables in the temple and that the cross is primarily the result of the social unrest caused by a life of radical service. The problem is that this is doesn't match Scripture which tells us that without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins (Heb 9:22) and that Jesus brought peace between man and God by His shed blood on the cross (Col 1:20). So there are certainly some places where red flags popped up in an otherwise outstanding book.So in summary I would absolutely recommend The Upside-Down Kingdom to most Christians but I would add a note of caution. Read with your eyes (and Scriptures!) wide open and be discerning in places where Kraybill starts to stray from orthodox teachings. I would caution a newer believer who is not solidly grounded in the Bible to be very cautious here. Perhaps read in the context of a study group UPK would work but I would be concerned that a new believer would miss some of the red flags I saw. I don't want to give the impression that this is not an outstanding book because it absolutely is and one I highly recommend. Just read with caution, which is good advice for any book!

"The Upside-Down Kingdom" by Donald B. Kraybill is an excellent book challenging all Christians to radically live out the Sermon on the Mount and other teachings of Jesus Christ. Mr. Kraybill, a sociologist and Christian of Anabaptist/Mennonite background, correctly and lovingly challenges Christians to abandon the philosophies of this world in order to accurately represent the Kingdom of God on earth.The Upside-Down Kingdom shows that the Kingdom of God really is opposed to any worldly system of thinking or government. To win, you must lose. To live, you must die. To gain, you must live. Every one of Christ's commands are the direct opposite of those taught by the leading thinkers of the world. If Christians are to impact their generation for the Kingdom of God we must start living like true ambassadors of the Kingdom.I give this book four starts because I thought it was slightly repetitive at points and not quite as conservative in some of its views as I would have liked. The main instance of this is when the author contrasts the Greek definitions of "love" in a way that I think stretches sound exegesis. This is common in modern evangelicalism but is really not as significant as Mr. Kraybill would have us believe. However, this book is still a great, easy read and will certainly challenge those who want to live like Jesus did.

In order for us to have a clear understanding the theology of Kingdom we have to know who Jesus are without any cultural, theological, spiritual, or philosophical assumptions, or what the author calls detours around Jesus. We have to know Him from his own story and words. Therefore, Kraybill's the theology of Kingdom is based on the story of Jesus Christ and centered on His ministry. He provides a biblical framework for understanding the kingdom.The author calls the Kingdom that Jesus preached the upside down kingdom of radically different principles and values, because its realization stands in contrast to the common ways of this world. The king of this Kingdom is God (the author uses Jesus sometimes), and its principle are Jubilees, Sabbath and Shalom that were insinuated in Jesus' words and message, and their main goal is to elevate men and women from the social, political, religious monarchal, economical labels or boxes to the level of siblings in the Kingdom. However, these principles contradict with the principles of the world. He explains that the political and religious power plays had drastic effects on the economic life of the majority poor. Therefore, Jesus himself has to face the three spheres of social power: politics, economics and religion.The author believes that Jesus teaching on kingdom is personal and realistic, and it is not to be lived aggregately but collectively. By personal, I mean that God rules in believer's heart and relationships to elevate them to a new status. By realistic I mean it could be applied to our live wherever and whenever human live. We can envision this in the church as assembly of people who are citizens of the Kingdom, and who adopt the idea and the values of the Kingdom in any culture they reside in. Because believers are, like any other human beings, social, they need a social structure to meet their needs and the needs of others. The church is the social structure that the values and culture of the Kingdom are practiced and passed on to others. Therefore, church as a "social vehicle" of the Kingdom culture uses its "servant structure" to accomplish Kingdom's mission, which is church's work. Its mission is to be the prophetic voice in the world against social discrimination, political oppression, religious scandals, and economic injustice according to God's purpose and will. In another level, the author criticizes the institutional church. He believes that Kingdom of God is above any place, nation, and culture. However, as the author get to the end of this point, he ultimately realized that we need to periodically evaluate the rule and purpose of its activities.Being from an Anabaptists background, the author articulates very well the Kingdom children's respond to the violent. Responding to violent with violent will naturally produce greater loss for both parties. A quick peak to the history, we will find that violent never solved problems. When we do not respond violently, we might think it is weakness, but according to Jesus Teaching it is power. Responding to violent with love serves many purposes. Firstly, we do not give the perpetrator what he or she intended by acting violently. Secondly, we teach the aggressor a lesson that some of them might not be familiar with. Thirdly, we are showing our ultimate obedience to our Master who commanded us to love our enemy. The author bases his argument on the principle of non-reciprocal love (agape). Agape is a love that does not expect something in return. The only way to that is through what he calls them the triple symbols, basin, cross, and tomb. The symbol of basin represents what is known recently by the servanthood leadership. Serving others without any regards to sex, nation, religion, and ethnicity is the core of the Kraybill's Kingdom Theology. This is not an easy task, because it will lead to the cross. But because we trust God, and we are accomplishing Kingdom's mission, the final word is for God. When the church adopts the triple symbol concept, its journey toward accomplishing its mission is not going to be a comfortable one.Looking at the political climate during the time, we will realize that the Jewish people were in desperately waiting for a king to liberate them from Romans. In the wilderness, Jesus had faced that temptation. He did not accept political authority that was offered to Him by the tempter. Instead, He chose to be a revolutionary. He was a revolutionary not in the Zealous type of rebel that used violence, but in violating Pharisees' laws and regulations that were above God's law, criticizing the false political tranquility of the Romans, and condemning the right-wing Sadducees lucrative temple operation. Serving others out of love was His policy. The second sphere that Jesus faced was religious power. The religious practice grew stale, empty, and lucrative. Jesus was tempted to reveal His Messianic secret to influence people to make a new movement or create a new religion. He might have struggled with this thought during His mission. Instead, again He preferred the role of the servant Savior. The third sphere was the economic power. Again and again Jesus preached against economic injustice that trampled the poor to benefit the rich. Jesus was tempted to use His power to feed the hunger and end the economic unjust. Instead, He chose to be the bread of life for all nations. His life, His way, and His teaching will form a new foundation of living.I read the book entirely, and I, without any doubt, can say that it is one of the most transforming books that I have read in English. It presents a universal theology of the Kingdom that could be applied to different contexts and understood in any given situation. The strengths of the Kraybill's theology of Kingdom is that it is a biblical theology, which could be applied to any church in any place in the world within their current context. Just as he provides context for the reader, he allows for contextual interpretation for those that wish to apply what they have learned from the text. And this might be the genius of this book. It never imposes context but rather exposes it. Moreover, the author incorporates his sociological education to bring to life in a very articulated and easy to understand language the historical, political, and social culture of the New Testament.My criticism of this book is that Kraybill seems to be ambivalent in his argument about the church. In one hand, he sees it as a servant structure for the Kingdom's mission. In the other hand, he does not seem happy with concept of the church. I believe that all human being's effort will fall short in living the faith. However, I also believe, that the church with all its shortcomings will remain the beloved bride of Christ. We cannot disvalue the rich meanings of the symbols of the church. At the same time, I agree with the author that we have to evaluate the meaning and purpose of these symbols periodically. The author also seems to accommodating from time to time for those who may yearn for personalized version of the Gospel of the kingdom and find this kind of interpretation repelling.The author theology fits best into the Anabaptist perspective of Church, State, and Public Justice. By taking Jesus words to heart, the church can become the prophetic voice in the community. Jesus called his disciples light and the salt of the world. Its mission is to add Kingdom's value and speak God's truth by loving the other and caring the community. The church already has a great deal of influence on people and communities' values. It is not expecting to benefit from this task financially, nor try to gain power over people whom she is serving. Rather to transform them to the image of Jesus. It is not going to be an accomplishable task. However, it is going to be an earthly time process. The test will show how faithful she will remain to her Master, "but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved."

About the Author

LeRoy Grannis’s initial foray into surfing began at age 14, but it wasn’t until the age of 42 that he picked up a camera and made a career out of it. Under doctor’s orders to take up a hobby, Grannis built a darkroom in his garage and began shooting surfers at Hermosa Beach, and "Photo: Grannis" quickly became a hallmark of the California surf scene of the 1960s. Grannis is considered one of the most important documentarians of the sport, and was inducted into the Surfing Hall of Fame in 1966. He died on February 3, 2011.

I grew up in Hermosa and along the South Bay...Many of the featured pictures were icons when I was growing up. How things have changed since my days at Pier Avenue Elementary School...So it goes!

Leroy Grannis was one of the surfing world's most superb photographers and had been a surfer since the 1930s. He recently died in CA at the age of 93. His images are crisp, clear and colourful. More importantly they evoke nostalgia for an innocent era, a time when surfing was pure fun, less commericalized, and less competitive than today. Even when there were competitions they were more for love of the sport than for big cash purses and TV celebrity appearances. Grannis' work is worth every penny.

Fantastic pictures, can't read German but pictures are worth $10 all day long !!

I didn't realize that the whole book was in German but that does not matter at all, the book is great, rad pictures that really depict the great surf culture of the 1960s.

Some great shots from La Jolla to Hermosa Beach and beyond. Lots of text but plenty of pictures as well. A decent read but much better as a picture flipper. Man those guys and gals were radical!

The photographs are superb and not only capture the rides and the riders, but also the culture that developed around surfing in the 60s and 70s. It's a time capsule that preserves the people and places that were part of my life back then. When I venture back in time as an amateur surfing historian and try to picture those people and places, I can see what LeRoy Grannis saw through his lens. He, along with the other greats of 60s surfing photography - Don James, Ron Church, Ron Stoner, Grant Rohloff, Val Valentine, John Severson, Ron Dahlquist, Tom Keck, Tom Jewell, Pat Darrin, Peter Rae and Dick Gustafson - paved the way for today's amazing photographers. I must say that I was surprised to find the Steve Barilotti's informative and beautifully written essay in English, German and French. But since that allowed more photographs to be included I didn't mind. Even all of the photo captions were in three languages. Tip of the hat to Steve and editor, Jim Heimann. Having to choose which photos went into the book and which to leave out must have been a nightmare. 10 out of 10.

I never tire of looking at surfing photography. In each and every wave, I imagine me riding it and it stimulates me, gets the juices flowing and drives me to get out there. This book does that.
