He captures the humor and drama that are present whenever groups of people spend time together. But his keen eye and breezy writing make this more than a "dogs are a metaphor for life" book. The little triumphs and affronts that we face in our typical day are brought to life with wit and compassion. This glimpse into the human condition, writ just the right size, make this book appealing to both dog owners and non-dog owners (who, if they are anything like me, will have their eyes opened to this amusing, yet tender, world).Gilbert's perspective is unique. For most of his life he was the opposite of a "dog person" - afraid of dogs at an early age and not warming to them in later life. Matthew Gilbert has got it right and written it with philosophy and heart. This book is about dogs and people, but especially about their meeting in a special environment. Written in memoir style, the story begins in fall and ends in summer, covering the first year of his and his lab puppy's experiences at a local Boston dog park. Gilbert, a professional TV critic, puts his wonderful analytic skills to work on dissecting place, people, dogs, and emotions.

This book captured the easy friendships we make with other dog owners, knowing the dogs names and characteristics first and then venturing into daily friendships, sharing moments watching them run for the shear joy of running. My best moments were at the Sheepfold in the Middlesex Fells before it became an official off-leash area in an open field with no shade and little park maintenance. As users of the Fells we were, for the most part, respectful and kind, and accountable for our the poop! My Golden and I would roam the trails, play fetch in the fields, and sneak quick dips in the reservoirs. Thanks to the bird watchers who wanted the Fells to themselves, we too were on the lookout for those pesky angry park rangers - the haters - who started threatening heavy fines for doing anything fun off-leash. The old ways of having a joyful time at the Fells ended when our group had to start negotiating our right to even be there. Luckily Amory still has off-leash hours.

Was interesting to see someone go from not a dog lover to being one and enjoying watching all the different dogs in the park and talking with their owners in the park where he wasn't a very social person before.

Recommended by a fellow dog park person in Fort Worth. An amazing observation of life at the dog park, which mirrors my 10+ years at Fort Woof. Vivid descriptions of the dogs and people encountered during the author's first year of dog park life. Well worth a read.

Having been a newbie at a dog park, I could fully relate to all the fascinating interactions with both the people and the dogs that the author encounters in his forays into the mysterious ways of the doggie culture. From the assumptions made about people based on a few daily moments of interaction to more in-depth friendships, this book accurately captures many of the moments that we share with our furry companions in search of exercise and socialization. An enjoyable read.

Just a ok read. Love dog stories unfortunately this one was just ok.

I received this ARC from NetGalley in exchange for my review.Am I missing something with this book? All of the reviews on here are four or five stars and so many people are calling this a brilliant book. I am going to be the black sheep, I guess. Lorrie is dealing with money problems. Her mom left her and her sister years before and also left a financial trust to be run by their aunt Gigi. For most of the book, I wanted to strangle Gigi, as well as Lorrie's sister Susannah. Their mansion was filthy and crawling with rodents and neither of them seemed to care. Gig just seemed oblivious to the financial problems. Lorrie tried to gain control over the trust, but Gigi says she changed banks and won't tell her which one. Then the power and water and phones all get shut off and STILL Gigi is living in dream land. WTH?!? For most of the book, I also was cursing the whole "absentee parent" syndrome that seems to plague most teens within YA literature. I mean, both parents just disappear and Gigi is not really a worthy guardian so they may as well be alone. Towards the end of the book, there was an explanation for why the mom left. There was also an explanation given for the dad leaving, but I still didn't understand that one. The reason for the dad leaving was ridiculous and completely unbelievable.Let's talk about the characters: Lorrie was very bland and so was Charlie. Charlie is the son of a senator whom she falls for after a day. Granted, they don't confess their undying love, but she does start wondering what his favorite condiment is and obsesses over other stupid details after a couple of hours with him. I wouldn't necessarily have minded except for the fact that Charlie was so DULL. There was no chemistry and no reason why Lorrie should have fallen so hard for him. They had a handful of conversations and all of them just about put me to sleep.Now let's talk about that "shocking" ending. Were there a few parts of it that were a surprise? Sure. But I actually saw the rest of it coming within the first 15% of the book. And this is coming from someone who almost never sees anything coming. I am clueless when it comes to these things. So believe me when I say that if I guessed it, then you can too. And the way part of the secret was discovered was so completely predictable as well. After all the secrets came out, it's like the author just gave up. We were given brief summaries of what happened to everyone within the span of a few pages. That part was as boring as the characters.I just would not recommend this book.

Edgewater gets a full review because a) it was a great surprise and b) I’ve not heard any hype about it all. So this is my announcement: Edgewater is good, and, if it wasn’t on your to-read list, maybe it should be.From the blurb, I wasn’t really that interested in Edgewater. If you’re wondering why I picked it up at BEA, it was partly because it was there and partly because I like to allow for surprises like this one. There’s something really lovely about going into a book with zero expectations and finding a diamond in the rough.Edgewater reminds me most of I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith, a classic YA fans should definitely read. And then they should watch the movie. Both feature girls in messed up families living in a once-marvelous home. Lorrie’s home, Edgewater, used to be the nicest home in an area of mansions, but now it’s more disgusting than many of the homes you’d see on Hoarders. Seriously, during the first scene, a cat pees in the stairwell because that’s just how things are there. And, no, that doesn’t get cleaned up.Lorrie dealt with her messed up home life by running away from it: to boarding school and horseback-riding camp. The money left for the daughters by her mother before she ran off to Europe with her lover, leaving them with flighty Aunt Gigi as a guardian, was enough for Lorrie to keep up appearances. It was not enough to keep Edgewater from crumbling into disrepair and lbr biohazard status.When Aunt Gigi fails to transfer the month’s money into her account, Lorrie finds herself summarily kicked out of horseback riding camp. She has to borrow money from her best friend Lennox to even get a flight home, and she has to leave her precious horse Orion behind until she finds money to pay for his shipment.Edgewater could easily have felt like a poor little rich kid book, but it really didn’t. Lorrie’s home life is so completely messed up, with the sanity of both her sister and aunt seeming a bit questionable. I don’t want to delve into the plot stuff too much, but I really liked the way Sheinmel resolved things; things are less black and white than I expected, which was really refreshing.Obviously I love Orion a lot. The scenes where Lorrie was with Orion were the most emotional ones for me. Like Lorrie, I’ve always been obsessed with horses, though I never had my own. As with the dilapidated home, Sheinmel’s descriptions really bring the scene to vibrant life. She even manages to make mucking out stalls not sound that terrible, because to Lorrie it isn’t; it’s part of having and loving a horse.The romance was a bit on the meh side, coming a bit too fast for my taste, though I wouldn’t call it instalove. There just wasn’t enough of a connection for me to care about it too much. I do, however, really appreciate Lorrie’s friendship with Lennox. Lorrie’s keeping a lot of secrets and does a lot of bad friend things, but their friendship is a strong one. In YA, there’s often a dearth of these solid friendships, so it’s nice to see. I also liked that they did fight and work through things, because friends do fight and a friendship is only strong if you can work through those times.Sitting at home on the couch on Labor Day, I read through Edgewater in just a couple of hours. There was something so compelling about it that kept me from putting it down.

The only downer is Bloom's introduction: he argues that "gothic" and "horror" are not necessarily the same thing, and tries to explains why, but his reasoning (or perhaps his writing) is rather muddled. My rating is for the Kindle version only. I have used this book for years in paper and would give it five stars. It's excellent. But I found the Kindle version difficult to use. I searched the word "handsome" and expected to be taken to the main entry where I could and read the synonyms. No luck. Instead, it found the word in other entries and did not permit me to turn pages to find the main entry. Buy it in paper. The paper version is superior to Roget's in that one need only look up the word alphabetically. With Roget it's a two-step process.

Not only an extremely, awfully, terribly functional, operative opus, opuscule, work or tome, but also a handy and serviceable one. Avail oneself of, utilize, apply and put to use this most excellent, masterly, well-executed volume. Advantageous and beneficial: use to good advantage. I have the Webster Thesaurus as well and use them in conjunction. Can't tell which is the better, frankly, because the other will invariably, inevitably, inexorably bring up some alternatives. Great for any writer. Easy to use on your kindle. Just search for a word. I love it.

Useless on Kindle. Great resource in print, but there's no practical way to find the word you're looking for on the Kindle. Very disappointing.

The book version of this book is perfect, thus the 5 stars.The Kindle version is useless. There is no way to go directly to a word you wish to find the synonym of; thus the desire to give only 1 star.First you have to go to the section of the book beginning with the first letter of the word you wish to look up, for example, delta. There is a list to first letters, so you click on d, the first letter of delta. Now you have to page through all the words before delta to find delta.You could use the search function, but you will come up with every word that has delta as a synonym. Then you have to page through that list to find the entry for delta.So why didn't I vent my anger with the Kindle version by giving a rating of 1? The simple reason is the physical book is better than any other synonym book I have ever tried to use. It really is the best and deserves 5 stars.Get the physical book!

This thing is massive, and more comprehensive than any other resource I've seen. At more than two-and-a-half inches thick, it dwarfs other volumes in the thesaurus reference genre. Where other books have many missing entries, a cursory search after this arrived leads me to conclude that this will answer my child's needs. My only complaint is that I couldn't find it available for purchase in a more durable hard cover format with acid-free pages.

If you use your thesaurus primarily to find synonyms, as many people do, then Rodale's 'The Synonym Finder' is hard to beat. In fact, I find it indispensable. I've been getting paid for my writing since the late 1970s, and a copy of 'The Synonym Finder' has been on my desk since the late 1980s. Comprehensive to a fault, the back cover claims more than one million synonyms can be found inside. And I can't argue with that. At more than 1,300 pages in an easy-to-read dictionary format, this book gets a lot of attention from me. I have nothing against Roget. The numerous variations all have good, solid word choices and other info. But if you simply need a synonym, Rodale will usually give you more choices, often in more contexts.The only issue I have with Rodale -- and the reason I deduct one star -- is that it is dire need of an update. Both of my copies (hardcover and paperback) are from 1986. Isn't it about time for someone to give it a facelift?

In the world of digital this and that, it's great to see a book get a nod toward essential equipment in my writing. No buttons to press in error, just look it up and observe the options. The only downside is one must be able to spell. To those would-be authors who skipped out on spelling, or rely on the computer to auto-correct your errors, this book is not for you. It is a fantastic addition, however to my essential writing library.

Being a person these days is pretty tough. I think that we live in a world where we are under a lot of pressure to Work Very Hard, All The Time, so that we can Be Amazing in a way that seems Almost Effortless. This pressure builds, over time, similar to how our closets and the spaces under our beds, and bottom desk drawers just get full. We don't want to be judged, and we are always worried we are being judged. And we feel alone in this, we feel like we are the only person who could possibly be secretly broken. Everyone else has these wonderful instagram photographs of themselves, see, where they're standing outside of an ice cream shop smiling, perfectly filtered and perfectly happy.And here is where Heather Havrilesky comes in. For years she has been someone you could write to to ask about why you are increasingly falling apart in different ways, and she would take these letters and pick some that seemed somehow more universal, and then she would write columns giving out advice that tends to boil down to: "hey, it's ok, it's ok to be you, the real you." And she's written this book here, which is full of important things that people should know. And it's one of those books where you will read a chapter, or even a few paragraphs, and then you'll have to stop and put the book down on your chest (this book is very good for reading while lying down, late at night) and stare up at the ceiling and you will think "oh gosh, gosh gosh, that is an important thing for me to have read, that is a good way of putting that complicated emotion that I have inside me." And you might be one of those people who has a pencil on their nightstand and you will underline a sentence or two. And slowly, slowly, while reading a book like this, you will come to understand yourself, or your loved ones, or even your acquaintances a little better. Which is what we need in this increasingly terrifying world. We just need to understand that we're all swimming in the same dark, open ocean.Buy this book! It's got good things inside of it. And you have good things inside of you, too! And this book will help you perhaps realize that.

I've never read "ask Polly" before, but I bought his book after hearing about it on NPR. It's amazing! I love the straight-talk that's so far from the wishy-washy "but how do *you* feel??" response that is so common when asking for advice. Her internal voice, which she references often, is very relatable and gives the reader many "wait...so I'm not the only one who thinks that?" moments. She shares grown-up perspectives without being preachy, and stresses the importance of forgiving yourself for being human while also challenging yourself to be better. It's in Q/A format and though I couldn't relate to all of the questions I read them anyway because the responses are so good. Take the plunge and buy it - Your day will be better after reading this book.

I bought this book on a whim. Was not familiar with the author. I'm a middle-aged woman, not exactly the target audience, I don't think, but am loving this book so hard. Ms. Havrilesky gives out a unique blend of wise and no-BS advice. I wish I could have read this in my youth. This may sound like hyperbole, but - it would have been life-changing. I plan to give this book to my 20 yr old daughter when I'm done with it.

Ask Polly is the highlight of my Wednesday-- I have columns bookmarked and text docs with my favorite quotes. I am in the middle of a break up with tepid MF-er #16 and if it weren't for Polly I probably wouldn't have the resolve to do it. She is the aunt you never had but so desperately need. The Kanye column is what hooked me - so glad it's in there (although the Yes guitarist column is 💯💯💯💯). I recommend it to all of my friends but haven't lent it out because I keep re-reading it.

I am a huge Ask Polly fan and this book does not disappoint. It is about 75% new material and oh boy, is it good. It has a few of my old favorites that I go back and reread regularly (What Would Kanye Do?) but the new stuff is just as fantastic as the previous stuff.This advice column has honestly changed my life over the last 18 months and this book gives me the feels because it is As Polly at its finest, and then some.I bought the hardcover because it's a book I can see myself reading again and again.

I love reading advice columns, so this book is right up my alley. She mostly tries to get her letter writers to be consciously aware of their own viewpoints, and for the most part stays away from prescribing cures to their problems.One piece I did take issue with involves a LW who is grieving their father and whose mother thinks they should be over it by now. HH wants to believe the best about the mother but without knowing the family more, her advice might just be even more hurt. There are toxic people, there are narcissists, and I have personal experience with both.That said, the end piece is a lovely little thing. It made me smile.

I love it. I want to share it. If you're stuck or sad or just not sure how to do the "life" or "human interaction" things that it seems like everyone else manages effortlessly, read these lovely essays that feel like they're for you even though they're answering someone with seemingly different issues. Start from the beginning, or open at random. Savor.

I am obsessed with Ask Polly’s weekly column in The Cut, so I was thrilled to find out I could get my Ask Polly fix in a book. Heather Havrilesky is a superb writer with cutting, insightful, funny, honest, empathetic advice that will warm your heart and make you laugh. Even on topics completely irrelevant to my life, I’m able to find something relatable in Polly’s advice. Since buying this book I’ve practically become an Ask Polly disciple, trying to get all my friends to read this book and partake in her wisdom as well.

I have seen a few comments/questions regarding what is included with this textbook. I am hoping I can clear up some confusion. I just received the "Human Anatomy & Physiology, Books a la Carte Plus MasteringA&P with eText -- Access Card Package (9th Edition)". This package came with the Human Anatomy & Physiology textbook, A Brief Atlas of the Human Body, Interactive Physiology 10-System Suite (CD ROM), and the Student Access Code for Mastering A&P. If you need the whole package, this is the one to order. Also, it is important to note that the textbook comes 3-holed punched and you will have to put the pages in a 3-ringed binder. This book does not have a binding. I personally like this idea because if I know that we are going to be working on chapters 2 and 3 in class, then I only have to bring chapters 2 and 3 to class. I don't have to lug around the whole book. Also, it might be important to note that I ordered this book directly from Amazon and not from someone who is using Amazon to sell their book.If you order the hardcover book, you will only receive the textbook. The hardcover book (at the time of this review) does not come with the Atlas, CD ROM, or the Access Code.When you read reviews, make sure to look at the review carefully to see exactly which book/package is being reviewed. When you look at the reviews for "Human Anatomy & Physiology" it will show reviews from people who received the hardcover book, the kindle book, and the 3-holed punched book. These reviews are all mixed together. The review will tell you exactly which book/package is being reviewed. Personally I think this makes it very confusing but if you look carefully you will find the information you need.UPDATE as of 1/30/2013I have just noticed that Amazon is now selling a loose leaf edition without the full package. When ordering make sure you order "Human Anatomy & Physiology, Books a la Carte Plus MasteringA&P with eText -- Access Card Package (9th Edition)" if you need the full package. If it doesn't list "Mastering A&P with eText - Access Card Package" in the title then you are not going to receive the full package. Also, it seems like Amazon is making it more difficult to actually find this full package. If you search for just "Human Anatomy & Physiology", this full package is not going to come up in the search. However, if you copy and paste the full title: "Human Anatomy & Physiology, Books a la Carte Plus MasteringA&P with eText -- Access Card Package (9th Edition)", you should be able to find the correct package. I hope you find what you need.Now that I have started my class that uses this book, I can now comment on using the Loose Leaf version vs a Hardcover book. Overall I do like that I can take a few chapters to class versus taking the whole book. Its much lighter and I enjoy that. The only bad thing I have found about having the loose leaf version is that you have to be more careful with the pages. The whole book is 3 holed punched and needs to be put in a 3 ring binder. When turning the pages, if you aren't careful, you can tear one or two of the holes on a page. It's usually nothing a little tape couldn't correct but if you are the kind of person who is rough on their books, turns pages aggressively, throws their books across the room, then you might want to invest in the hard cover book.

I'm a professor at a university and have found this book to be a excellent resource for an Anatomy course (for the Anatomy course at the Graduate School Level -- actually the School of Medicine). This book does an excellent job explaining the content and follows a logical sequence for the students. The tables and illustrations are excellent. From a students view, I'm confident you'll find this book to be thorough and provides an excellent foundation to build your understanding of Anatomy.One downside to the book is the thinnest of the pages. The pages remind me of the type of paper used in a magazine. If your a person that uses a highlighter, you'll find that a regular highlighter will "bleed" through the pages. I would recommend possiblely a Bible highlighter even though it's not the best solution. The "magazine" type paper used in this book is "shiny" and the Bible highlighters I've found don't really grab onto the paper as well as it would probably in a bible but it's better than a regular highlighter "bleeding" through the page. That's the only downside I can say about this book. The content far exceeds anything else. I just thought of the possibility of using highlighter tape (since I just thought of that possibility, I'm not sure of the cost factor for the tape -- I completely understand that being a major factor when your already buying extremely high priced textbooks).

I purchased this book a few semesters ago and it is a great text book. This text book you will want to keep for future references.With that said.. Do yourself a favour and just get the past edition. I returned my 9th edition. I just do not see the justification to charge someone almost $200 for a new book when the previous edition is almost the exact same, with just replacing of pictures. The 8th Edition can be purchased for less than $15 bucks here on amazon (ISBN-10: 0805395695 ).I am pretty certain that most college students are pretty much on the verge of being broke, or soon to be for that matter. Always try to get the previous edition if you can, your save a lot of money, around 1/5 the price. These publishers just drive me nuts, I understand they need to make money, but come on, most of these books are never completely rewritten and they come out with a new edition every 2-3 years and those editions like this one, are almost exactly the same, except for replacement of pictures and a few updated stories/examples. It seems crazy how a book that is just two years old seems to be considered no longer usable.--*Update*: For most A&P students, your cover the first chapter all the way to the nervous system. In A&P II your probably start with the Endocrine System.Your professor may require you to get Mastering A & P. This requires that you use a on-line website that allows you to take some tests, quizzes and other exams. Getting the older book, will save you money, so you will be able to purchase the other software. The access code is $55, if you want the eText/eBook included, then it is $110 and that will include the 9th edition. The My Mastering A & P website, is good for 1 year. If you take AP1 in spring, you will still be able to use your Mastering A & P on the same access code if you take AP2 in the fall.Do not be fooled by changed pictures or rearrangement of chapters. Seriously, the human body has not changed in the past two years. We still have the same muscles and bones and, yes the kidneys still filter plasma. ;)

My package included the Brief Atlas, Access Code Card, 10 System Suite CD Rom and Loose Leaf book. I called my school to verify that the access code card as infact the only one I need because the ISBN numbers didn't match. They said YES. So through Amazon I paid $136 (no tax and free shipping) for all the bundle but through the school it would of been $272 plus tax and shipping.Thank you amazon, and it did arrive almost exactly 48hrs from when I ordered lol. (actually a few hours early :)

This book is definitely going on my keeper shelf! Mr. Faidley provides very important information in an easy-to-digest format on how to deal with a variety of weather-related hazards and types of storms. I was dismayed to learn how many things I was taught as a child were exactly the WRONG thing to do in a storm. This guide has the potential to save many lives.
