Carl Minzner finished his End of an Era in the spring of 2017 for publication in the spring of 2018. In those intervening months the rising strong authoritarian system he had seen developing under the presidency of Hu Jintao has further surged under Xi Jinping with the day of release coinciding with Xi’s party dropping the two-term limitation that had provided China with a legal and peaceful transformation of power unique in authoritarian ruled systems and decades after Deng Xiaoping warned against “the leadership of a single person,” opening the probability of prolonged one man rule in China; forecast by the author.Professor Minzner is a China specialist at Fordham University Law school but this is not as he says a book about law, it is a study of the communist party’s long period of control, its attempts to move toward reforms that would create a government grounded in law and the failure of that process leaving glaring and growing gap between its perceived justification as China savior and international representative and the turmoil of intense internal social forces.His treatment is intriguing, he unfolds the endless possibilities as domestic and/or international event unfold based on a rich understanding of China’s long history but also the forces developing in many lands including his own that foretell troubling times; and how Xi Jinping might respond. He matches concepts of the state and social integration, played out with comparisons of other nations’ developments, against the rule of a single unopposed party now more that ever missing the integration of competing factions.He is sharing twenty years of observation and the rich interaction of other China specialists domestic and foreign and his title very well chosen; you will enjoy his history and his sometimes playful but also well grounded forecast.

It is currently my favorite book on the recent political and social developments in China. The author carefully delineates how in the past few years China has been rolling back the institutional reforms it carried out during its reform era and tightening its control of the society with ample evidence and specific examples. The book also includes interesting discussions on some underlying issues that the Chinese government (both present and past) faces, such as the principal-agent problem between the central government and local bureaucrats and the mechanisms to address people's grievances. The chapter that compares and contrasts China with other societies are also enlightening in making sense of how Chinese society is (and will be) evolving. Definitely recommend this book to people who want to get a realistic view of how China is changing both in the short- and the long-term. With this book's insights in mind, people can better read news about China in perspective.

This is a wonderful book. Not only is it engaging, well written and clear, it also presents a thougthful and balanced perspective on the current changes in China. Professor Minzner describes both the strengths and the weaknesses of the Chinese system, highlighting parallels to the current U.S. situation. He does so from the perspective of someone who clearly cares about both countries, and is concerned about where both are headed. The book covers a wide range of topics, from the rule of law to religion to the economy, and offers deep insights into the forces that are driving the centralization of power in China as well as the under appreciated level of public dissatisfaction and protest that is often hidden from Western view.Perhaps the most impressive thing, though, is that the book was written before many of the recent changes in communist party structure, and yet manages to predict them with a remarkable degree of accuracy. My suggestion: read this book if you are interested in the future of the world and of the most populous contry in it: China.

Having spent (not an insignificant part of) my life in a communist country,I was quite surprised to find that an American scholar (and professor in law) is the  author of this thorough and deep work, summarising the very important and disturbing trends in modern communist China.On a separate note -  this reading is highly recommended to anyone occupied in global macro investing.

Carl Minzner is an extraordinarily perceptive author. As both an avid reader of books from various "China watchers" and someone who has spent significant time in-country, I can attest that this work is spot on. A direly needed contribution to the field of China studies. Both engaging and intellectual (but not overly academic at the same time), I found this work forcing me to reflect on my personal experiences abroad in a new light. This should, and I'm sure will soon be, required reading for any student of China.

Insightful, timely, and easily digestible. The best book on China's political economy in the last 5+ years. A must-read for China-watchers, but highly recommended for the layperson, as well.

His analysis on this very important topic is on point, but the book is quite dry to read. I think this book is more useful for people less familiar with China than those who have followed the country for a longer time span.

Amidst the landslide of greening and sustainability books constantly being marketed and touted (get the irony?), two jumped out at me. Reading them as a pair made it clear that Plenitude, by economist Juliet B. Schor, and The Cheapskate Next Door by journalist Jeff Yeager are describing the same contemporary trends using very different language. People can earn fewer dollars without their quality of life being diminished, IF they also experience an increase in free time. This free time can be invested in social capital, healthy lifestyle, creative self-provisioning, and ingenious thrift, aided by everything from social networking to asking grandma to teach canning techniques. Schor's book is analytic; Yeager's is a how-to-do-it manual.Reading over and over again how we aren't "over" this Great Recession because none of us are buying enough, hence the jobs producing all of it are lagging, has often made me wonder how that squares with the carrying load of the planet. The fact that personal savings have actually increased seems like good news, not bad. The fact that demand for fossil fuels has decreased - isn't that the goal here? Schor, an economist with an emphasis on ecological concerns and the author of two other terrific books, The Overworked American and The Overspent American, reviews the basic theoretical underpinnings of modern economics and concludes that they don't square. This has been tried in many places and times, often to avoid laying workers off. Kelloggs of Battle Creek, Michigan, famously offered a six-hour day for decades which workers loved, along with all the others lucky enough to live there. Schor's original synthesis is to combine this with the new realities of environmental as well as social stress, to definite a life of Plentitude less dependent on material excess. Except that what she is talking about as a trend looks more like an interesting trickle of outliers (Hi, Anna! How's the honey going?). OK, I grow a few tomatoes. That doesn't make me Ma Ingalls. But perhaps a generation from now her manifesto will prove true. If so, we will all be the better for it.The Cheapskate Next Door: The Surprising Secrets of Americans Living Happily Below Their Means is a charming hybrid of two terrific classics, The Millionaire Next Door and The Tightwad Gazette. Those books were all about resource conservation from a financial standpoint - why leave good money on the table? TheMND describes a value-oriented affluent population who eschews conspicuous consumption. TTG was more about people scrapping together a nest egg, even on a tiny salary. The secret of both is living beneath one's means. However, they were written before the age of environmental awareness. All their strategies translate quite well to a new eco-age. The Cheapskate took himself on a national book tour - by bike, CouchSurfing his way across the country.His book is a lot of fun. My main takeaway is that if you create good habits, these too are hard to break. One becomes a reflexively resource-conscious consumer [a description I prefer to "cheapskate"]. Case in point. Two friends and I were at the beach in search of 1% hydrocortisone cream for my friend, suffering from a bee sting. We grabbed the first brand we saw. But I couldn't resist going back to look at the shelf, where I found a generic tube for half the price. Then I saw a generic tube half the SIZE. It is generally more economical, both financially and ecologically, to buy a larger quantity. But! Only if you will finish it all. Having just thrown out boxes of unused, expired OTC meds from my old house, I knew the smaller generic tube was a good choice. Time expended: 1 minute. Amount saved: ~ $6.00. Since I earn less than $6.00 a minute, it was a good use of my time. However, you can't send a child to college or pay for health care -America's two huge and ever escalating price tags - on small salaries supplemented by self-provisioning and judicious cheapskating.If you're following these authors' advice, be sure to check these books out from your local library soon!

Schor does an outstanding job of arguing that both from economic and ecologic perspectives our society needs to and actually must consume less. She introduces us to a concept of Pentitude in which we live with less but live better. Lower stress, more satisfaction, more productivity and creativity, more sociality within a community with emphasis on the local. The corporate mentality will diminish in comparison to self reliance. Both income and earth stress will be lower and more sustainable. I think she is probably correct.When she moves from economics to technical subjects I believe she makes significant errors. I do not see the Plentitude world containing straw bale houses or "fab" machines that can make anything needed. That is a strange combination of 1970 Mother Earth News and science fiction. I would have prefered a discussion of how to achieve "life cycle" pricing for all manufactured products (raw materials to become manufatured products to become demanufactured to finally become raw materials again). Or the use of energy and inorganic materials to produce organic compounds without plant photosynthesis. This would enable synthetic petrolium for transportation and manufacturing. How would such concepts play into Plentitude?Criticisms aside, Plentitude is a well documented, thoughtful and thought provoking, and is particularly significant for the era in which we are presently living. I have personally recommended her book.

I love this book! There are so few resources out there for lesbians, but I'm happy to have stumbled upon this. There's so much valuable information to help lesbian couples, and great things to keep in mind even when single and looking for a relationship.

I am so fortunate to have met fortunate Ms. Right. I’m very grateful to the author because she has equipped me with the tools I need to make sure I don’t inadvertently do damage to this amazing gift of a partner.

Can't say enough good things about this book and I'm only into the 2nd chapter. Great for any couple, especially same sex couples. Highly recommend.

This is really a wonderful reference. Detailed and well written in a frank but compassionate way.I highly recommend it to anyone providing psychotherapy services to lesbians and of courselesbians themselves.

Glenda Corwin's book is without a doubt the most helpful available on this subject. She has done her own research, and comes down sensitively but clearly on the side of having sex in your long-term lesbian relationship! She then goes on to give practical advice on how to rekindle sexuality through making the conscious decision to take responsibility for your own turn-on and practice "24 hour foreplay." Throughout, her tone is highly readable and respectful. I highly recommend this book and plan to make a practice of giving it as a wedding gift to lesbian couples. 85% of them may need it someday, and Dr. Corwin's advice could save them years of frustration and heartache, breaking up, or settling for a sexless friendship.

My partner and I are reading this book together, and have found it to be extremely helpful. It is helping us work though issues we have and also opening our eyes to issues that we hadn't thought about. It's great to have a book catered to relationships between two women that deal with topics that don't come up in other intimacy guides.

The author absolutely nails some key topics around lesbian sex and intimacy, and more than once made me think of things in an entirely new way. I would recommend this to every lesbian friend of mine.Oddly, it is sprinkled with some pretty egregious editing "misses." These typos and inadvertent word switches take away from the overall point and seem eminently avoidable.

I was totally blown away by this book. It's answered so many questions I had that I never dreamed I'd find the answers to. I always thought I had issues that no one else had. It's a relief to find out I'm not the only one, and that there are solutions. I truly believe every female, both straight and lesbian, can gain insight from this book.

I read this in the midst of my 3rd visit to Haiti, as part of "my" 3rd medical mission with a team of 15 volunteers. Ms Willentz writes with wit and crisp narrative to describe the ironies of global assistance to Haiti. I'm back from my 5th trip to Haiti - and recommend this as valuable perspective on what may or may not get accomplished in a 'challenging' country like Haiti - or specifically to prepare for the non-linear world of working in Haiti.We were at the Guest House of Hopital St Croix in Leogane, epicenter of the earthquake, which is run by dedicated volunteer managers who host teams like ours doing mobile medical clinics out in the villages - or school projects etc. Then - manager, notre ami Robin of TX noted me reading the book, expressed interest because she'd heard of it - so I was glad to present it to her when I finished its gripping pages. Valuable perspective - bravo!

After spending some time in Haiti during the time of Baby Doc, I was looking forward to reading Amy Wilentz's latest book about that beautiful and troubled island. I did not disappoint. Her love and hope for Haiti and its people shine through every page. Well done. I highly recommend it to anybody who is interested in Haiti, its past, present, and future.

Like most of the Western World there is a mentality of ‘out of sight out of mind.’ Wilentz makes Haiti very much insight, in mind. It shares the personal accounts of Haitian culture, missionary workers, Doctors without Boarders, and the reporter who brings it all to us. It made Haiti hit home by pulling on the heartstrings of the innocent Haitian children victims to their surroundings. It merged the gap with the fables we tell kids to teach them a lesson and keep them safe; only instead of Snow White they had werewolves and voodoo. It made me respect those that give their life for a cause with solutions so far out of reach—yet they jump in. Great read with a blend of culture and humanity.

Accessible and engaging as both narrative of post earthquake Haiti and a summation of the author's 20 year history of traveling and writing on the country. The main crux of the book is that aid is not working as its delivered via NGO's and large development entities such as , IOM and USAID as it is inefficiently rendered and does not take include the Haitian people in the decision process. We meet a variety of characters both Haitian and "blan", foreign in Haiti and Haitian and there is a positive example of aid done right in the person of Dr. Megan Coffee who runs a TB word in Port au Prince. The section where she debunks the myth of the "planting the magical tree" that will save Haiti is funny but also succinctly captures the problem of outsiders coming to Haiti and offering solutions without considering the need, wants, or culture of the people they want to help. The book is a bit scattershot, and occasionally over the top but has some great information and insights and is both entertaining and emotional. My favorite leitmotif is about Haitian history and politics in relations to the use of voodoo.

Very well written, based on personal experience, knowledgeable author. This book contrasts with her prior one which was much more optimistic. One of the necessary reads to begin to understand Haiti.

This was recommended by a friend who has just published her first book. She said this book is one of her favorites and she displayed it when shewas at a local book store. The author spent a lot of time in Haiti and the book reflects both her connection with the people she has met in Haiti and her concern for them.

Amy Wilentz' "The Rainy Season" was my go-to book for an inside view of Haiti for over twenty years - one that I read three times or more, and that put so many questions in my head as history watched Aristide come to power, then be disappeared, then become President again, then not. And then the earthquake came, with all of its seemingly Biblical import for this continuously unfolding story about the nation we have been taught from an early age carries the tag line "Poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere." And wouldn't you know, perhaps when we are most looking for the proper context to review all of the events from the fall of Baby Doc through its retreat from the world media "disaster" stage, Amy Wilentz comes forth with this miracle of a book, a very personal journey that also happens to bring an unblinking eye to this new (and yet same old) Haiti. It grabs you from the first page, and manages to put 250 of incredibly complex history (especially as a proxy state of the USA) into images and reams of connective tissue that allows the whole story to make sense. Along the way, you get inside the experiences of celebrities like Sean Penn and heroes like Dr. Megan Coffee, each of whom manages to find their way through the Byzantine Haitian cultural and political roadblocks to force real change. On the one hand caustic and jaded, and on the other generous and full of innocent surprise, Wilentz is peerless is capturing this nation in the throes of the ultimate disaster, the outside forces that flooded its borders with help, and how it is the ultimate crucible for assessing the reach and limitations of charitable aid. If you read it once, you will want to read it again. And probably right away.

Beware! The author is Swedish and the projects are aimed toward northern gardens and with some materials I've never seen for sale anywhere I've lived. Willow twigs? Chipping hammer? Most of us don't have a welding outfit or a kiln in our toolkit either. A pictorial tools list is included.I'd rate many of these projects as suitable for the fit and moderately experienced DIYer. Many are for the larger yard.Some projects are handsome and seem within my skill level. I liked the Japanese trellis and the pebble compass rose.Be sure this book will apply to your situation before buying.

This is a perfect book for me because one of the paintings in the book is by my Great Great Grandmother, Ellen B. Farr. I was very excited to have a copy of my own.

Introduce children to the Jewish harvest festival of Sukkot and the Abayudaya Jews of Uganda through this charming picture book. Warthog can’t part with the sweet-smelling etrog, a citrus fruit used in celebration of the festival, until Auntie Sanyu’s niece Sara arrives and convinces him to share it. Because of his big-heartedness, he is ultimately gifted the etrog in a satisfying conclusion. The poetic, ear-pleasing text builds in a house-that-Jack-built manner: “[…] Camel sipped precisely,/ and Parrot chatted brightly./ Lion purred so nicely,/ and Warthog ate politely.” In addition to a cast of lively animals, the story features African Jews from Uganda: “They asked for rain at home, and in Israel far away.” Back matter provides information about the festival, defines Hebrew/Yiddish vocabulary, and explains the history of the Abayudaya. The illustrations add a lovely dimension to the story; saturated colors burst on white backgrounds, and the Warthog’s coy expression throughout will delight readers. Highly recommended!

Fun Rosh Hashana book that will delight 3-5 year olds. Great illustrations to go along with the text.

Sometimes you love something so much that it is hard to share. And sometimes other kids don't share with you when they should. It's a problem that every child struggles with. WHO'S GOT THE ETROG is at once about a particular tradition--Jewish--about a particular place--Uganda--and about this universal kid issue! The warthog who comes to Auntie Sanyu's gloriously decorated outdoor shelter, her sukkah, loves the intriguing citrus scent of the Etrog so much that he just can't bring himself to let anyone else hold it. The other animals who come to visit, more of them each night, are getting increasingly frustrated with Watrhog's greediness. But when Auntie Sanyu's niece Sara comes, she figures out how to coax the Etrog out of Warthog's paws. Catastrophe averted! Warthog learns to share., and the other animals are happy. At the story's end, Auntie Sanyu and Sara curl up together and watch the stars through the roof of their sukkah. With engaging, and vividly colored pictures and lilting rhyme, this book will really appeal to young children. It is great, also, that this book represents a very under-represented group, the Abayudaya Jews of Uganda. A note in the back gives more information about their history. This book is a winner!

A most unusual and delightful romp through the Ugandan jungle during the Jewish holiday Sukkot. Yes, there is a Jewish community in Uganda. In this sprightly, clever telling, the symbols of the holiday – the etrog and lulav – are treasured by the jungle animals. This book is just plain fun!
