What sets it apart is Eker's focus on the way people think and feel about money and his canny, class-based analyses of broad differences among groups. In rat-a-tat, "Let me explain" seminar-speak, Eker asks readers to think back to their childhoods and pick apart the lessons they passively absorbed from parents and others about money. With such psychological nuggets as "Rich people focus on opportunities/ Poor people focus on obstacles," Eker puts a positive spin on stereotypes, arguing that poverty begins, or rather, is allowed to continue, in one's imagination first, with actual material life becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy. To that end, Eker counsels for admiration and against resentment, for positivity, self-promotion and thinking big and against wallowing, self-abnegation and small-mindedness. I don't think there is anyway to truly express how much I love this book!!! I've listened to it at least 5 times now and will continue to as it's so full of direct helpful information to getting yourself to think the right way. Everything starts from within and I'm really on a journey to think the right way and hopefully have a much better life and better for my kids kids as they pass it down.Please pick this up somewhere and listen or read it. Can't recommend it enough!! AWESOME BOOK!!!

This book is worth reading for the one very valuable central idea it presents - that we have a pre-conditioned "set point" for wealth, and we must break our conditioning if we are to succeed past it. Other parts of the book struck me as poor reasoning, or even dangerous advice - like, that you should "practice" being wealthy (before you are) by splurging on expensive stuff and getting used to a "rich" mind set. I don't think this is as generally useful or practical as the author purports it to be, it's based on some pretty narrow reasoning of What Worked for Him.

This book is average at best. A big commercial for his seminars, which are mentioned at least 100 times. You never learn how to diagnose your own "money blueprint" because of course you have to pay to go to a seminar for that. This was a big let down. Also there were no chapters so without natural breaks it was really hard to read. There are a few decent lessons and highlights to take away, but much less useful than most other highly rated money books.

Life changing at a time I needed to be reminded of it. It's a great motivational book, even though I don't agree with some of his ideas. For example, the drive to get wealth shouldn't be put first over family. I've seen too many people put all their energy into getting wealthy but neglected their spouse and children while doing so. Yes, they won the battle by getting the money but they lost the war by losing their families through divorce or enmity toward each other. Most of his ideas are great motivators, though.

Excellent book for putting yourself inside of the heads of successful people. It allows you to see things differently, would recommend to everyone who hasn't had a parent/mentor-figure to talk about building wealth, pursuing opportunities, and personal development.

This was a great read. I loved the points the book made and how the author gets you to participate in the activities. I felt like I was at a motivational conference, but in my own living room.I've implemented the money management techniques mentioned in the book, and it's been great. The financial balance this book brings was much needed in my life.This is not a get rich quick book or business book really. It's really a money book that focuses on financial balance, rather than just investing or money management. The concept of a splurge fund was new to me, but it's been great to implement.The fun I have spending money from my splurge account motivates me to make more money so that I can have more fun :) And I don't feel guilty about spending the money, because I have other money budgeted for investing, savings, and giving.This book really will change your life if you do the steps. So far I zip lined on the highest zip line in the world, and went skydiving with my wife. Next we're going on an overnight trip somewhere so that our 4 year old boys can fly on an airplane for the first time.Get the book and do the steps. You won't be disappointed.

Mostly interesting as a reminder of things we do wrong in our day to day lives. But it's not cool when it comes to self promotion and as marketing vehicle for other products of author.

This book really changed my life and my business. I came from a poor family and everyone I've ever known has been poor. This book re-wired my brain for success and money and helped me see things from a viewpoint I never would have had access to! I see now how I had been living in the darkness and there is a whole different world out there full of abundance! I no longer resent rich people; I learned to love myself as well and how to change my money blueprint. Thank you T. Harv Eker!

I hate it when I buy a book and it turns out to be an out and out sales pitch. Nothing to learn here. Don't buy.

I am giving this 1 star because it is impossible to give it a 0. I ordered this book only because it was required reading for my 13 year old daughter for school. This book is a collection of stories and memoirs from the most messed up teens that the author could possibly find. The things that this book exposed to my 13 year old were totally inappropriate for her age. It was thoroughly depressing reading, at best. My daughter and the all the young people she knows are for the most part, healthy and happy. She has seen some sad incidences with some of her peers and she can recognize that most the time this is due to this young person's life not having the structure and support as children should have provided to them. However, this burden should not fall on another child, as my daughter. It takes all she has to take care of her own needs as her age at 13 is challenging enough, as she takes on increasing responsibility in advancing to quickly approaching adulthood. This should be required reading for teachers, administrators, health care professionals to teens, and parents of challenged and damaged teens, not other kids who are relatively happy. This is too much of a burden to weigh on kids who don't have the tools to deal with this because they are just that, kids. It is sick to make the entire goal in compiling a book to collect only the most severely dysfunctional cases among teens that can be found and put into print to convince your reading audience that every teen is on drugs, failing school, abused, suicidal, pregnant, miserably gay (yes, "gay" kids are portrayed as miserable in this book), incestually sexually abused, schizophrenic, or has some other issue that makes them unable to cope. This is where older children's and teen literature has gone, to the most depraved and desperate levels that the imagination can fathom. We have stolen our children's childhoods away from them where they are not permitted to have a childhood anymore and no happiness and joy is allowed to be offered to them. Literature like this for our kids, which I am including this book in that category since it was required school reading, offers our children no hope in their futures. Where is there inspirational reading for our children and stories about the winners in our world who can be celebrated because of their accomplishments through hard work? Where are the models of what we want our children to become? This book goes right along with teen-based television viewing. Do we really have to suffer another teen pregnancy show??? And the teen-based movies are right there with the literature and television. How about another kill or be killed movie, everyone? That's our form of entertainment today, to watch our children kill each other? Sick. This book goes right along with the rest of modern depravity. Am I actually alone in wanting my children to be able to experience a childhood, and be able to be kids, and BE HAPPY, while everyone else funnels their work-earned dollars into this garbage? My kids will have the rest of their lives to deal with society's problems, when they have the adult tools to do that with and a solid strong foundation of knowing what HAPPY should be: responsible, mature, strong, healthy, and helpful and caring to others.

I thought that this book should the hard truth most people don't want to except.... Really good! Everyone should read this because it shows the struggles of a teen which I got a lot of this year.

As a teacher contributor with 12 students acknowledged in this wonderful book (and many more who contributed anonymously), I was expected to say something nice. I held off until I read the book cover to cover, not once but many times. I immediately sent a copy to my 14 year old daughter who is a freshman in high school in Maryland and made other copies available at the school where I teach. Dr. Bluestein captured the essence of what the kids are saying, in their own words and on their own turf. This is an easy to read book designed so that any teenager can get to the substance of a topic quickly. Too few adults can relate so poignantly to areas of high school life that need to be understood. I urge parents to read this book and make it available to their teenager. I urge my colleagues who teach the precious youth of our country to read this book to hear what their students are thinking and saying and to know where to send them for sound advice. There is nothing like this book anywhere...for helping, confirming, educating, tickling, prodding. Not only does this book clue me in as a parent, it is a great resource for kids trying to get through high school the best they can, or failing to. I bought 3, one for each of my nieces and nephew. They have all commented on how "hip" and "with it" it is. And helpful, which they casually slide into the conversation.

I really loved this book. It had a lot of information that most teens do not know. Some teens think they can only talk to their friends about personal things that are bothering them. Students think teachers are just against them and just don't care about them. I know this book relates to me. Some of the stories told by the students, I could relate to. I felt the exact same way they did. I recommend this book to any teen who is having trouble in life and needs help dealing with it or anyone interested in reading a very interesting and educational book.

This book offers wonderful information, resources, and advice for people going through the trials and tribulations of high school. It deals with just about all the issues high schoolers deal with: relationships, friendship, fitting in, suicide, narcotics, academics, you name it. It's written in a way that makes the reader fell like s/he can confide in the authors because it takes on a very understanding, nonjudgmental, and loving tone (crucial). Every high school should carry a copy in its library.

I'm a big fan of Dr. Bluestein's work and this did not dissapoint me. This book is real...real kids, real problems, and blessedly real hope. I'm sorry it wasn't around when I was in high school, but I know it will help someone now. For too many kids, high school is a nightmare they live with their whole lives. This book lets them know they're not alone - a solution all by itself. But, as usual, Dr. Bluestein packs more goodies. If you're a fan, you'll already have this book. If you're not, you soon will be if you read it.

I can't recommend this book highly enough. Leonard Boff believes Pope Francis will continue the vision of Vatican II and help to transform the Catholic Church into an instrument of justice for the modern world. Francis has a third world vision, very different from the Eurocentric Church that no longer speaks to modern man and woman. Francis is for our age what Francis of Assisi was for his time, and just as Francis of Assisi was called to rebuild the Church so Pope Francis has been given the mission to renew our Catholic faith and make a difference for the good of humanity. Apparently Boff wrote Francis and encouraged him to call together a world wide council of Christian leaders to address the current crisis that challenges the human family. Taking this a step further, many are beginning to call for a world synod of all religious leaders to address the crises of violence, poverty, threats to the environment, and to define what we have in common so that we can move forward and secure the future for humanity. Pope Francis has the world's attention and this is the opportunity for great advances in world peace.

Such a refreshing book! There's been so much published about Pope Francis, but this one (paralleling Pope Francis of Rome and St.Francis of Assisi) is great. Good overview of Spirit of Vatican II "enfleshed" by 2 people of different historical ages, but very similar human/social conflicts. If you've never head or heard the story of St.Francis of Assisi (not the one's that focus on the birds!) it would be good to do so, to get the most out of this book. Here's the Gospel lived in the flesh with JOY! Though the author is a highly respected, learned Franciscan Theologian, his style ofwriting in this book is an easy read...though very thought provoking. Highly recommended

Boff writes well and keeps the attention of the reader steady through the pages of this book. He has many great points and offers insights in the life and mission of Pope Francis that come from someone who keeps his hope for a Church that witness to the message of Christ from day to day in humble and accepting way. A lovely comparison is made between the two Francis, with a view of their individual rapport with their Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. At times a tension is created by the author because of the extreme views presented in his work.

I went through the great depression I am working now with the most handicap.I see that life begins with the poor and continue an upward trend. Life depends on the poor. The Church depends on the poor.To be poor is to be a true servant in the world. Try it.

This is a wonderful work by a South American theologian. His perspective is a bit different than those here in the US.In this work, he compares Pope Francis to St. Francis of Assisi. Beautifully done and with a sense of credibility and honesty.It is apparent that Pope Francis is about to make major changes in this Church. His ability to make it happen is directly related to his ability to live what he is suggesting. He is perhaps one of the best loved popes of modern times, already, in only his second year of office.The part of Pope Francis that I love is his wonderful smile. He is genuine and authentic and it shows. May God bless him on this arduous and most difficult journey!

This is the finest book I have read on Francis and his reform of the Catholic Church. It is most valuable in it's presentation of how we got to where we were when he was elected i.e. how the Papacy evolved from a largely spiritual/pastoral entity to a quasi-imperialistic monarchy. I was a "fan" of Francis before this book came along but now I am also one of Mr. Boff who writes not only with scholarly clarity but with wisdom and a great heart. His love for Francis is exceeded by his love for our Church and he writes not, as many others do, in anger but with hope. This is a book not just for those of us who are somewhat liberal-minded followers of Pope St. John XXIII but for Catholics of all theological camps as well all men and women of faith, hope and love.

It is so difficult to believe that in our life time such a radical shift has taken place in the Roman Catholic Church. It did not take a council to make the shift, but one single person and that was Pope Francis. Everyone you speak with just praises this wonderful person. So simple and so humble and yet such a powerful witness to the Gospel and to the mission of Jesus. All the previous popes of our memory pale before the spirit of this wonderful human person who has been gifted with such great gifts. He is humble and yet powerful. His words are simple and his analogies are so down to earth. He does not need to "Pontificate", he just simply shows the example of humility and sensitivity that the leadership of this Church needs.The author clearly present us with a Papal figure who is loved and who loves. "Smell like the sheep" and that is our command to live lives reflecting our true care for all people, especially those who are poor and so often neglected and powerless.

I must admit up front that Marguerite is an old friend, who delivered two of my children, so that my review may be a tad short of “objective,” but this is Rhode Island, where there are way less than 6 degrees of separation.            Marguerite thought that since I’m a neurologist I’d be most interested in the story on trephining, which traced the history of the practice, seen in skulls of people who had survived for many years after the procedure. But I actually liked best the story about Calmette, an early immunologist who will forever be linked with the BCG inoculation against tuberculosis. He was interested in developing an anti-snake venom treatment and was able, in 1894 to purchase a barrel full of cobras from India. As an ardent believer in the balance between evidence and experience based medicine I was taken by the story of al-Razi, a legendary Persian physician in the late 800’s, who apparently published early, if not the earliest, controlled clinical trials. One demonstrated that epileptics who received sneeze therapy had fewer seizures than those who did not, and that bleeding reduced symptoms of presumed meningitis, compared to controls who were not bled. So much for evidenced based medicine. We learn that Leonardo da Vinci lingered by an elderly dying man to perform a dissection as soon as possible. DNA, blood circulation, the discovery of penicillin and 40+ more topics are cleverly discussed, in a straightforward and engaging manner, that encourages the reader to think about the larger issues associated with each of these 50 medical advances.This will make a great Christmas present for middle school and high school students who might need a little encouragement to learn more about medicine and its history. ” - Joseph H. She has been a private solo OB/GYN practitioner for the last 36 years in Rhode Island, where she lives with her family. She has authored a number of medical case reports and clinical opinions for peer-reviewed journals, and she has taught medical students, residents, and fellows in OB/GYN.Gale Eaton has spent a lifetime with books for children and young adults, first as a children’s librarian at the Boston Public Library and the Berkshire Athenaeum, and later as a professor of children’s literature at the University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Library and Information Studies. The book is told mainly from the vantage of the homosexual Gacy, a "creature of lies, internal contradictions, misrepresentations, and false idealism," who claims utter confusion over the crimes. None, however, has explored the depths of Gacy's aberrant psychology, his childhood, and daily life as well as Buried Dreams. With Gacy's cooperation, albeit often contradictory and self-serving, and a four-year-long investigation, Cahill has managed the difficult task of unmasking, to the extent that it can be done, the motivation of a horrific killer. Readers should be warned that this book contains explicit details of sexual torture and murder. It is as riveting as it is disturbing. Gregor A. I've always been interested in the mind of serial killers. I know I'll never figure out what makes them tick: what sets them off. Obviously, after reading about the trial neither can pysch experts (which doesn't surprise me). Five or six expert psychiatrists and pyschologist analyzed John Wayne Gacy and none could agree on a diagnosis. They tended to side with whoever was paying them rather than what the DSM said.As for the book itself, it was written very poorly. There were numerous grammar, spelling, usage, and mechanics errors. On top of that, it was clear that spell check was the primary source for editing. Complete wrong words, such as "was ant" were substituted in for the correct word, "warrant." There was a definite need for a thesaurus as well. The same words or phrases were repeated through the book as was parts of the story. Whatever company, which can be identified in the book, that edited this story did a terrible job.

This book is well written, but redundant. I have read several books on this subject, however never from the perspective of the killer himself. Its a difficult read not because of the subject matter but because Gacy was not an interesting person. The books subject matter requires a third person perspective in order to give a fuller picture of the crimes. This book simply felt like 371 pages of Gacy rationalizing his evil and abhorrent actions. Throughout the book he denies all knowledge of his crimes, with the exception of four. The book jumps around and does not follow a linear narrative pattern. It reads as if it were written in a stream of concience thst soes not work well in this genre. We get the ramblings and rationalizations of a madman for over 300 pages and the most interesting quote comes close to the end. Gacy admits, per the author that he remembers all 33. Why wss this glossed over. Focusing on that quote would have made for a much more compelling book. Skip this superficial drivel and read Terry Sullivans Killer Clown.

Tim Cahill attempts to do the impossible in BURIED DREAMS INSIDE THE MIND OF JOHN WAYNE GACY:He attempts to get inside the head of a serial killer in his own words.Cahill explains in his introduction: “In understanding the crimes committed by John Wayne Gacy, I found it was necessary to learn to think like John Wayne Gacy…I have tried to present a picture of a man’s mind, in his own style of speech, often in his own words. I wanted to put the reader inside that mind—the mind of the murderer…”In this Cahill has succeeded very well. At times I felt dirty, slightly disoriented, even paranoid as I read about Gacy’s 33 murders, the torture, his sheer craziness (so it seems to me and perhaps most “normal” persons).It also raises disturbing questions as to what is “normal” and what is “insane” in the human mind. These are questions difficult to answer because the terms in the questions themselves are difficult to define. What is normal? What is insane? Cahill tries to explain as follows:“A psychiatrist or psychologist can define the symptoms of the disorder, but because the sociopath is propelled by choice rather than illness, the concept becomes almost philosophical, even theological. In discussing sociopathic personalities, one is forced to deal with such abstractions as the idea of free will; in extreme cases, the sociopath brings some of the people he meets face to face with the very nature of evil itself.”Cahill also shares these disquieting thoughts:“I suspect that the majority of readers—those whose lives never touched John Wayne Gacy’s—share, at the outset, my original belief that anyone committing such incomprehensibly cruel crimes must necessarily be insane. But if John Gacy is sane, as those who prosecuted him argued—if the pattern is not symptomatic of mental disease but is rather a rational criminal’s ‘method of operation’—we are confronted with an intensely disturbing moral and philosophical concept. It is not something we ordinarily care to examine too closely, this idea that evil exists in our world. Confronted with the crimes committed by John Wayne Gacy, decent people cling to the cold conceptual comfort of insanity. One psychologist I spoke with about Mr. Gacy stated this position best: ‘Evil is a medieval superstition.’ Then again, he never personally examined John Wayne Gacy, as the reader of this book is about to do.”I would normally in a review discuss in more detail some of these questions, concepts, and details contained in the book. After living in the mad house of Gacy’s mind throughout this book, however, I am not sure what I could add. One would have to read the book to reach his or her own conclusions.In the end, whether we call it insanity or evil, one thing is certain: Something monstrous can and does live in the minds and hearts of some among us.

I must say I was expecting a glossed over analysis of what we all think John Gacy’s mindset was at the time of the murders. I was pleasantly surprised. This is an actual in-depth description on not only what Gacy did, but looking at him trying to understand himself, all while maintaining the fact that he was trying to con everyone to escape death himself. This book was at times difficult to read because the psychoanalysis of John Wayne Gacy the serial killer is a difficult concept to grasp. I would recommend it to anyone looking to get into the mind of a serial killer.

This is a well-researched, well-written report of the life, actions, criminal investigation, psychiatric evaluation, and court proceedings of John Wayne Gacy, the construction company owner/clown who killed 33 young men after homosexual sex and torture and buried most of their bodies in his crawl space/basement. The detail given here is impressive. His diagnosis (Borderline Personality Disorder with some Antisocial Personality Disorder, Narcissistic Personality Disorder, and paranoid schizophrenia) agreed with my suspicions, although I did learn a few things about psychiatric evaluations. Altogether, worth reading.

The book was well put together, easy to read and comprehend. My daughter had to do a speech on this individual and the book gave her the information she needed for her 10 minutes speech. She got an A on the assignment.

For what it is per genre, I enjoyed the book. Not sure if that makes me the sicko or what but so be it. The book was written well. Seems thoroughly investigated and reported on w details of Gacy's mind and thought processes.... The first book I've read written in this style. Many things revealed that I had heard before ab Gacy and his horrific sick and twisted crimes. It was exactly what I was looking for in a read.
