Robert Wrede received his B.S. and M.A. degrees from Miami University, Oxford, Ohio. After teaching there for a year, he attended Indiana University and was awarded a Ph.D. in mathematics. He had positions at Harvard University, Columbia University, Oak Ridge, and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and served as a mathematical consultant at several large companies. He was interested in most branches of mathematics, especially those which involve applications to physics and engineering problems. How can this book be sold? Errors and typos in a book that is supposed to help you build your math ability is counterproductive. How does this have 4 stars overall??

This book has a lot of good qualities - it’s concise, and it does a tremendous amount of examples. HUGE COMPLAINT: there are literally hundreds of typos and other such errors throughout. There must have been very little proofreading done by a trained mathematician, otherwise this would have never gone to press. Unfortunately this is pretty typical of Schaum’s, but this one is especially bad. My advice is to be very, very careful if you choose to purchase this reference.

Of the dozens of textbooks I've used over the years, this one has the most mistakes per page, by far. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of typos, in formulas, questions and solutions. If you don't have a working knowledge of the subject material, this book will leave you dazed and confused.In addition to the typos, the book is extremely terse in its explanations of the material. It is not a helpful guide and the problems are too riddled with mistakes to be helpful.

This book is the perfect example of how NOT to teach math. It actually makes me angry in a way, as it was the book I used for a class I needed to do well in, and instead of helping, it made things harder. Having experienced the concepts taught in a far superior way now, it feels downright irresponsible to write a textbook in such a lazy, unhelpful manner. Even concepts I came in understanding, like Mean Value Theorem - something at it's heart simple enough to teach to a child - are presented in a way that would be incredibly difficult for anyone new to the concept to understand. This is a textbook, and a quick-understanding one at that. Why write it that way?Also, as others have said, there are a ridiculous amount of errors in here. Almost on every page. I dunno what accomplishments the authors have in the field of pure math, but they should give up on teaching, they suck at it.

I purchased this item in order to review material that I had studied years ago in college. The topics are covered very well and deserve five stars. However, there are an unbelievable number of typographical errors on almost every page in this edition. This can only be due to very poor editing. These errors are very annoying to someone, like me, who is already familiar with the material. They must be very confusing to someone who is trying to learn this material for the first time.

If you wanna be masters in any specific course that is listed in Schaum's Outline just by these books. Containing a lots of numerical and solved problems make this series best.

A nice summary of all the important results of Calculus with good set of exercise. But there is simply too many typos. Cannot imagine a book with this many typos can be sold. If you write an errata for this book that will be another book. So this book is not suitable for first time learners. If you know the stuff already and have the tolerance for typos then this would be a good summary of all the important results.

Ayad Akhtar is a genius. It's atypical for a writer of novels to write a brilliant play (2012 Pulitzer for drama) that works both on the page and on the stage. "Disgraced" is an intense and powerful study of America. Many will claim that this play is about Islamaphobia, and we'll talk about that, but another, perhaps deeper, element of "Disgraced" is what it means to live with nationalism in a country made entirely of immigrants. We meet the cast-all of whom are privileged "succesful" people whose ancestors come from very underprivileged circumstance. Emily is a WASP whohas been "American" for generations, going back perhaps to the 17th Century. Any trace of the old country was bled from her family many generations ago. Fuerthermore she's a white girl whose mother is a racist, feeling strongly that America is white, European descent and as such Emily has an open mind but there's much she doesn't understand. Her failure to understand creates the catalyst that destroys everyone. Sadly, she'll never understand. She's married to Amir, a man born in America but raised by parents who escaped India after part of it became Pakistan. Amir changed his last name so that he could fit into the high finance law firm in which he's on a partner track. He is no longer Muslim, his American accent is flawless and he wants to keep a safe distance from all things Islam. Last night a waiter saw him as a potential terrorist which upset Emily enough to ask him to pose for her newest painting. He presents himself at Airport Security rather than waiting for racial profiling. He recounts an incident as a child when his mother's hatred for Jews affects him. His nephew, Abe, comes to ask him to speak at the trial for an imam charged as a terrorist. Abe too has changed his name and is "Americanized" though born in the Middle East, by mid play he's changed back. Issac is a Jewish American art dealer who will give Emily her first show and they celebrate over dinner. He's a powerful man in the art world and not by coincidence his black wife will get the partnership at Amir's law firm because Amir's prescence at the imam's trial makes The New York Times. During the meal they revert to their roots and centuries of conflict boil to the surface. The play does look at Islamaphobia as it's inevitable. The Taliban's goal to return to the purity of the Qaran (or Koran) IS a major topic in post Nine-Eleven New York and a carefully unspoken topic in mixed company. But what's most pronouned is how much of our roots we must relinquish in order to be American. The denouement is what happens when too much is relinquished and what occurs rivals anything Edward Albee ever wrote. This is a great read. As with all plays you must design and stage them in your head and that is when we see the purity and truth; that is when the play comes to life and we purchase Akhtar's novel and try to find a production of "Disgraced" playing near-by. Easier done, since this play has been produced in regional theatres all over the United States and England. This script includes an important forward regarding play reading and an interview with the playwright.

Absolute deserved winner of the 2013 Pulitzer Prize for drama.This is a 90 minute, 4 scene (1 act) play that has 5 characters that range in age from 22 to 40. They are of black, white, Jewish and Muslim backgrounds and they all currently live in New York. Questions of work, culture, love, loyalty and traditions are all discussed and exposed.The pace of the play is excellent. There are no dead scenes or digressive moments - every word is important and impactful. The dialogue is incredible - there are moments of tenderness and humor, as well as those that will enrage some readers and make most think deeply.Mr. Akhtar wrote an excellent essay "On Reading Plays" that appears at the beginning of this edition. He does an outstanding job explaining how reading a play is different from watching it (this is not a new sentiment, but he writes about it exquisitely).Upon finishing the play this evening, I got on the internet and started looking for where it is playing. It is currently playing in Boston, about 250 miles from my house. I will drive up next week to see it.

Really makes you think. While the whole play pretty much takes place around dinnertime, it really does move fast. Great diversity. You have a white artist who seems to date men and use their ethnicities as her muse for her paintings, her husband who is an Islamic man who despises his religion and even changed his name to something Indian to hide his heritage, his partner at the law firm who is a black woman, and her husband who is a Jewish art collector who is thinking about picking up one of the first woman's works. And they have a bit of a history. Really raises some questions about religion, and some people might be upset with the ending but it was very thought-provoking. Definitely something I'd like to see on stage. Plus, Ted Mosby plays the Jewish art collector on stage for this play, so it's fun to imagine!

Perhaps the best play you will ever read. Without too many spoilers, there are a lot of post-modern themes incorporated. The story is very fast paced, but still manages to touch on issues of race, socio-economic discrimination and profiling, territorial disputes, the dynamics of a master and slave. I was introduced to it for a class reading, and I am so grateful to have read it.*Note: the author uses (Beat) throughout the play. This is like a stage direction denoting a small pause. Interpret as any dramatic pause in other plays or movies, where the character delivers a line and pauses before continuing.

From the interview of Akhtar at the end of the book:"The play begins with a Western consciousness representing a Muslim subject. The play ends with the Muslim subject observing the fruits of that representation.... I do believe personally that the Muslim world has got to fully account for the image the West has of it and move on. To the extent that we continue to try to define ourselves by saying, 'We are *not* what you say about us,' we're still allowing someone else to have the dominant voice in the discourse."

Though far from a perfect play, it's still one of the most exciting blasts of fresh air for the American theatre in years. Avoiding the dead ends of whimsy, meta self referential inside jokes, cuteness, and "magical realism", which is what most young playwrights coming out of the MFA industrial complex are taught, Akhtar has real issues to probe and he gets right to it. BTW, if you have not listened to the interview with him on the American Theatre podcast OFFSCRIPT, head over there right now! A whip smart writer.

Wow, this is a must-read! The play really gets into that ambivalent space where MANY Muslims live, but we are NOT represented in mainstream media. It's funny, smart, controversial, & VERY thought-provoking!

This play was so powerful. The audience was stunned and we had a very deep, very lively conversation in the theatre afterwards. I ordered the play because I missed some of the dialogue.

For $2.99 Kindle I'd say it's a very good deal for there is a lot of examples one can use, especially when your stumbling for that simple word you need, and your having a bad day, and just can't put it together. The book is also very detailed, such as, what is the entire face doing during a frown. What are the eyebrows doing during a frown, or the eyes, or the brow, and so on.Yet I'm just a little disappointed. When I think of expressions, which is in the title of the book, I think of words like worry, sad, guilty, or mad. The definition of expression is the process of making known one's thoughts or feelings, and this should have been the core of this book, and something like a "frown" should have been a symptom of an emotion, but this book makes words like frown, glare, leer, or smile the core, which makes one have to do a search in the book, if one got the Kindle version anyway, find an emotion like worry or sad, and go from there.For $2.99 I can't complain too much though. I just hope Dahlia fixes the problem mentioned.

This book is a huge help for any inspiring writer. I want to buy more of Dahlia Evans wonderful helpful books. She is the best!

Really disappointed. I was confused while reading this mass confusion. Must need an English degree to sort it out. Like really, not easy or useful.

The books seem ok, but the box to the set is squished and the plastic wrapper was torn open and has some strange orange stuff on it...makes me nervous to continue opening it...it's supposed to be new.

Mattie has the perception of someone much older than himself. What a wonderful outlook on life he has! You will understand this when you read his books -- a collection of poems written by a young boy dealing with an incurable disease which eventually took his life when he was only 14 years old. I'm looking forward to re-reading Heartsongs and Journey Through Heartsongs, and reading the 3rd book, Hope Through Heartsongs!

I can't believe that I'm the FIRST to review this unbelievably beautiful CD collection! I seldom buy CD's at all, and this is as far as I know the first ever "book CD" I've listened to. Obviously, it had to have been made by Mattie during the last year or so of his sojourn on the planet, and I don't know quite what I expected. What I experienced was a profound immersion in the actual personality of the young man. I had never seen any of the television interviews of Mattie, and my only awareness of him came as a result of my reading of Jeni's biography "Messenger" less than a month ago. Yet to hear his voice so eloquently reading his own writing had an indescribably blessed effect upon my own spirit. I hope to listen to his readings over and over again. Mattie's voice truly does come from Eternity. What a gift!!

I want to say that before I review this work that I hold the Air Force rank of Major, and quite over 40. I have seen a lot and have done a lot ... until I ran into the poems of Mattie Stepanek. In short, he changed my life forever.This is a gorgeous 3-book set of his first 3 books of poems. I bought this set through Amazon and it is simply difficult NOT to read and reread it. Why? Mattie Stepanek was not just a person with dsyautonomic mitochrondrial myopathy, but he was a young boy who ROSE above difficult odds. Eventually his medical condition destined to take his life on 22 June 2004, but he packed 2 lifetimes of TRUE living into a mere 13 years!Mattie had a mind that had the philosophical power and mental acumen of that of a 50 year old person. As former US President Jimmy Carter said, " ... of ALL of the hundreds of thousands of people whom I met in my lifetime ... the greatest person whom I have ever met was Mattie Stepanek."Pres. Carter's words are not empty. Pres. Carter [ with a Master's degree in Nuclear Physics ] is an erudite man with a sharp eye for character. Five minutes after meeting Mattie in 2002, Carter became a changed man ... and he and Mattie bonded for life ( and Pres. Carter's wife as well)In short, you will be AMAZED at the sheer wisdom--the gentle and REAL wisdom that comes from the pen of this boy.He changed my life forever ... and those who truly want to be happy in this life, who believe in musical and magical hearts will discover that my words are not empty neither. These books are well-presented and shockingly mature, yet you get glimpses of the young child he was when he wrote them. He had insight beyond his years.
