Really good, but half of it is simply the plotlines of 100 plays. So it's not as in-depth as one might like, but I have no idea where anyone could find out more. I'm very happy to have it - it was a pivotal point in entertainment - the link between Grimm's tales and modern horror movies.RIP both the author and the publisher.

Third edition of the book has some great additions (I own and use the first two editions in my teaching), although I'm not sure the addition of "Orgy in the Lighthouse" improves the volume - the plays in the first two editions seemed like better choices. Having said that, this is a great, user-friendly introduction to the Grand Guignol and an excellence reference tool for the people, plays and history of that remarkable theatre.

For those who have heard of the Gran Guignol, opportunities for finding details are scarce. This book delivers such details. With amazing production stills, full plotlines and plays revealed and an incredibly detailed history, all curiosities have been answered. Give this tiny theatre's outsized influence on the culture of not only France, but all of Europe and the US, the history of the Gran Guignol should be better known. This book rectified that. I highly recommend!

heard about the Guinol for years and was wonderful to actually read some of the plays. wow, some of em are knockouts! I wish I could have seen Maxa. I'd have gone to see her every night, like Peter Lorre in 'Mad Love'!

There's a lot of filler here (original scripts, story outlines, etc.) and I have to say that the author does not go at enough length about the history of the GG to meet my taste. Still, it is a fascinating look at an unusual phenomenon.

Here's probably the only book on this subject and it's good too. If you like Sweeney Todd, this is where it all came from.

A host of photos, sketches, and the cartoon as social commentary, add visual interest to a narrative that walks the reader through the history of the bizarre Parisian entertainment space.For novices who know little about the Grand Guignol, Gordon’s book is a superb primer. For stage and film historians, it is a must-have addition to their libraries.The author breaks the text into two major parts.The first is a brief chronological account of the theater beginning with its birth as an 18th century chapel. By 1897 the Grand Guignol found its place in the cultural landscape of Paris, albeit off the beaten track.As stage artist Maxa, who was known as the “High Priestess of the Temple of Horror,” explains, the Grand Guignol was “situated in a dark, narrow street . . . No one would suspect a theater in such a sordid, dingy neighborhood.”Taking much of its material from the police blotter, gore, terror, and sex were served up nightly in short plays combined with a sprinkling of comedies to ease audience tension.The psychologist Alfred Binet was among a handful playwrights who found an audience at the Grand Guignol. Patrons ran the gamut of European royalty to a lesser sort whose fame was in progress. The pastry chef Ho Chi Minh and female erotic author Anais Nin were followers of the Guignol stage.The theater contributed to the early success of the horror films of German Expressionism, most notably The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. But in time, Hollywood films like Dracula and Frankenstein were using the Grand Guignol formula, hastening changes that ate into its popularity, Gordon tells us.The second part of the book contains a brief autobiography of Paula Maxa that is a must read and two complete play scripts one which is co-authored by Binet. Also, Gordon gives the reader brief plot summaries of scores of plays performed in the theater’s sixty-five year history.Lastly, the book reprints an essay by playwright, Andre de Lorde, who is the co-author with Alfred Binet of "A Crime in the Madhouse," one of the two plays included in the book’s final pages.Overall, The Theatre of Fear and Horror is a concise history and a delightful collection of anecdotes. There is a downside, however. Gordon includes photos of people associated with the theater but does not identify them by name, leaving the reader to do some guesswork. Similarly there are many unidentified scenes that pique our interest but we have no way of knowing their connections to the plays in the text.Nevertheless, The Theatre of Fear and Horror is a smooth read that moves with a lively pace. I highly recommend it.

I like the macabre and theatrical history so it is no surprise that I would want to read a book about the Grand Guignol, the Paris theater noted for its frightening productions. Mel Gordon gives us a solid overview of the theater's 65 year history, the methods used for its special effects and a good collection of graphics. There are capsule descriptions of many plays and the full scripts of two of them. Also included is Grand Guignol playwright Andre de Lorde's commentary on fear and horror and an article by Maxa, one of the most popular performers of the company. I suspect the definitive history of the Grand Guignol has yet to be written, but Theatre of Fear and Horror will serve readers well in giving them an idea of what it was all about.

But “A Crack in Creation” deserves to be on any short list of decidedly important nonfiction books of 2017.The reason is not simply because of the authors’ pedigree — co-author Jennifer Doudna is credited as the chief pioneer behind CRISPR, the potentially world-changing gene-editing technique. The book’s impact is also buttressed by the authors’ scientific rigor, deeply felt passion, and understanding of the world-changing consequences of their research.Doudna and Samuel Sternberg’s “A Crack in Creation” is two books in one. The first third is a short primer on genetic engineering and the scientists who’ve advanced the science over the years. While the attention to detail and footnote-rich documentation is commendable, the lay reader will be forgiven if she skips through some of the dry backstory to get to the good stuff in the remaining two-thirds of the book. Because few of us have yet to reckon with the significant issues raised by the recent breakthroughs in CRISPR research, which only came to light in 2012.As the authors write:“Many experts predicted that CRISPR would be a research biologist’s dream come true, enabling experiments that one could have only fantasized about doing before. I imagined that it would democratize a technology that had once been the privilege of the few. … Now, CRISPR seemed to be on everyone’s lips and the topic of every conversation. And yet it was still only the tip of the iceberg. …“As I sat on the plane flying back to San Francisco after that first trip to Cambridge, I could already see a new era of genetic command and control on the horizon—an era in which CRISPR would transform biologists’ shared toolkit by endowing them with the power to rewrite the genome virtually any way they desired. Instead of remaining an unwieldy, uninterpretable document, the genome would become as malleable as a piece of literary prose at the mercy of an editor’s red pen.”Doudna’s initial worries centered on whether scientists would prematurely use CRISPR without proper oversight or consideration of the risks and whether bad actors might use the technology for nefarious purposes. So she took the first halting steps to begin a public dialogue about the implications of CRISPR research, first by organizing a roundtable of 17 scientists in January 2015 and then a larger gathering later that year to discuss gene therapy and germline enhancement. Those discussions continue to this day.Meantime, other researchers and entrepreneurs got busy. Entire companies have sprung up with the mission of conquering such genetic disorders as cystic fibrosis, sickle cell disease and Duchene muscular dystrophy. The reader roots along with the authors in cheering on what amounts to the beginning of what might be called “the precision genetic medicine revolution.”It’s helpful that the authors translate scientific arcana into everyday language, as when they mention that a snippet of DNA being modified by CRISPR is “roughly one one-thousandth the width of a human hair” or that a molecule “acted like a set of GPS coordinates” to guide the replacement DNA to the right spot or when referring to an enzyme as a “motorized hedge clipper.”Many readers will be interested in not today’s practical applications in the lab but in what tomorrow may herald. Count me in the latter category, as I just finished writing a suspense novel with CRISPR at the centerpiece. What’s so fascinating about the technology’s future prospects? The authors write:“In the future, parents may be offered the option of selecting for traits that go beyond disease susceptibility and gender and cross into areas like behavior, physical appearance, or even intelligence. The list of known associations between certain gene variants and a diverse list of traits continues to grow, and as the PGD technology improves further, what’s to stop fertility clinics from consulting this genetic information so they can offer their consumers even more choices when it comes to selecting the most desirable or ‘best’ embryos?”Entire conferences and mountains of newsprint will be devoted to dissecting the implications of CRISPR usage on early stage human embryos in the decades ahead. The door has just been cracked ajar.Where does Doudna, the progenitor of CRISPR, come down on the ethical scales?“I don’t believe there’s an ethical defense for banning germline modification outright, nor do I think we can justifiably prevent parents from using CRISPR to improve their chances of having a healthy, genetically related child, so long as the methods are safe and are offered in an equitable manner. … [But we also need to] redouble our commitment to building a society in which all humans are respected and treated equally, regardless of their genetic makeup. …“Advances in gene editing are enabling us to rewrite the very language of life—and putting us closer to gaining near-complete control of our genetic destiny. Together, we can choose how best to harness this technology There’s simply no way to unlearn this new knowledge, so we must embrace it. But we must do so cautiously, and with the utmost respect for the unimaginable power it grants us.”Well said. The authors smartly observe that society as a whole needs to be in on the decision on whether to move forward with certain aspects of the gene-editing revolution, and that scientists need to demystify the technology so the public can “understand their implications and decide how to use them.” Let the robust debate begin.

The late William Buckley claimed, "A conservative stands athwart history yelling, 'Stop!'" Dr Doudna is no conservative. Still, in "A Crack In Creation" she finds herself standing in the middle of the road of progress shouting, Wait! The book recounts her lab's discovery of how a highly adaptable region of bacterial DNA called the clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR) can be programed to edit DNA itself. Potentially, CRISPR gene editing will cure many human diseases and end much suffering.Amid all the excitement a dream in which she meets Adolph Hitler compelled Dr Doudna to ask the Frankenstein question: Just because we can do something (in this instance, edit the human germline), does that mean we should? In a collection of essays entitled "From Under the Rubble," Nobel laureate Alexander Solzhenitsyn presents the image of technologists running hard to both keep up and stay ahead. They're running hard just to keep pace--heads down and tongues lolling, panting and sweating to stay ahead of the researcher on their heels while trying to overtake the researcher just ahead. But they never take the time to ask IF their research ought to proceed.All credit is due Dr Doudna for exclaiming, Wait! We need to talk this through; this issue is too big for just science. Yes, she comes down on the side of racing forward. But the way she thinks through this potentially humanity changing science helped me see gene editing not just with layman's knowledge, but with compassion and a bit wider perspective than when I started the book. And yet ... while she pays polite lip service to potential religious concerns about gene editing, her embrace of random evolution leads her to view religious objections as antiquated notions that need only be addressed to be disposed.Scientists (actually, their editors) writing for layman ought to include a glossary. That's missing. And her habit of expressing how brilliant her fellow scientists are gets pretty worn pretty fast. Nevertheless, I believe the author is aiming to do good and this is an important contribution in shining a light in this area - I was surprised (and shocked) that science had progressed so far and so quickly, at least to me, without significant public debate or governmental intervention.

Fascinating subject, but the book is not particularly well written and frankly its way too technical, filled with a lot info you don't really need to absorb the enormity of this discovery. But thank you Jennifer Doudna and all the researchers who have spent years fine tuning this technique, I have no doubt you will save many lives. I can't imagine how to ensure that it's only used for good, not evil purposes.

I thought this was an informative book, albeit a bit too short. All in all, I think 30 Covert Emotional Manipulation Tactics was informative and clearly written by a person who has lived with manipulators of all sorts. If you've ever thought you were crazy, or that you just can't figure out what's going on with a person in your life, this book can help.However, the author, AB Admin, referenced another book in her/his book, called: "Who's Pulling Your Strings" by Harriet B. Braiker Ph.D. The "Strings" book was very informative and basically a step by step of how manipulation works and how to deprogram yourself.I found both books helpful.

There are a lot of books in my cart on this topic, breakups, relationship health, etc., and I should probably read them all. But when you’re in the throes of pain in the immediate aftermath of a breakup with someone like this, you need quick help just to get through the day. Maybe even the hour. This was an easy read but full of revelations and insights that somehow, when you recognize what your ex has been doing to you, and you give it a name, and you realize it’s so valid that there are books about it, well it makes you feel better. Gets you through that hour or that day. I highlighted the book in 3 colors. Yellow for information that generally applied to my ex. Blue for information that was spot on, word for word. And pink for information that was spot on, word for word, AND scary. Practically the entire book is highlighted. Out of the 30 tactics described, he had 27 of them. For the first time in 4 years since I met him, I don’t feel addicted to him or dependent on him. I see him as a very disturbed man who almost brought me down with him, and I just want him gone from my life.

This is by far the easiest-to-assimilate book of its genre - and I've seen a lot of them. I've been extensively researching narcissism, gas lighting and various psychological disorders. I wanted to understand how a strong, formerly independent and powerful woman could inexplicably become weak, powerless, jealous, and insecure in a relationship that started out so promisingly. The many other wonderful books, websites and blogs I've found have helped me immeasurably, to learn that certain vulnerabilities (due to upbringing, personality type, etc) make some people great targets for manipulative people. If you've ever been completely frustrated by someone, but when you try to explain it to someone else - or when you confront that person, you can't convey a solid reason - guess what? You might not "be crazy" -- you might be susceptible to subtle manipulation that boggles your mind and makes you tear your hair out.The beauty of this book is in its simplicity. The layout and writing are excellent for someone just figuring out that they might be the victim of controlling personalities. It's 60 awesome pages, and you can easily spot the specific issues you are personally experiencing. These results then help you narrow down the specific issues that apply to you personally, so you can research them further. There are also a lot of references in it to help you further your study. This book is a big wake-up call - BUY IT.

The book started off ok. However, the book then talked about invalidation. The book's description would include anytime someone disagrees with you, doesn't react the way you want when you tell them about your achievements/circumstance, or has a different opinion. The book also describes this as the worst kind of psychological abuse. I'm sure that there is a way that something like this could be abusive, but the book's description of invalidation encompasses normal parts of a relationship between two people that don't think exactly the same way. Ironically, if someone took this to heart, then they would make their partner out to be abusive every time they disagree or see things differently, which is extremely manipulative and abusive. The next two chapters basically say that abusive relationships have ups and downs, which all relationships have. Just because everything isn't going great all the time doesn't mean you are in a manipulative relationship. This book has very little information that is accurate and useful. The author also doesn't seem to have a sufficient knowledge of the topics covered in this book, but maybe this is because I finished listening to a much better book on this subject "In sheep's clothing" right before listening to this.

I strongly recommend this easy to read, uncomplicated, well researched hand-book. This book will help you heal from any negative past relationships regardless of whether the relationship was romantic, friendship, employer, parent or a family member and can help keep you from entering into, enduring or continuing physical and emotional abuse. Prior to becoming a R.N., I was in a very confusing, controlling and abusive marriage, prior to that, I had the same type of maternal parent (only she was more diabolical, may she RIP). So, even a child/adolescent would benefit reading this book. When an employer's main focus was to get me to disclose issues in my personal life and then, she began to focus negatively on my personal choices, (non-work related), (due to my previous experiences), I was able to walk away before she could professionally cause harm. If I had read this book, I would have recognized the warning signs that I ignored during interview and would have refused the position.

It briefly describes units of measure, with 1-2 pictures per page. If you don't know what you are looking for, this is kinda useful. It's also useful if you just want to learn new units of measure you didn't know about. Do not get this book if you know what you are after and want a detailed understanding of it. The descriptions are very brief and some really insufficient for a solid understanding. Obviously there are also a lot of specialty measures left out (I'm sure this is for practical reasons, as one could likely fill many weighty volumes trying to catalog and define all currently used types of measures). Sadly this book has no historical information, and very very little information on how these units were derived. Overall I'm disappointed, but not enough to return the book as it was $6.

Little in this book casts any light on the "Science of Measurment". In reality it is an endless list of definitions of words and terminolgy, the vast majority of which can be found in any good dictionary. This work tells you that an "Ocean-(is) a huge geographical mass of salt water" (pg 191). Whoa, be still my heart. That's informative.The author(s) lifted definitions from the English dictionary, a medical dictionary, and the Handbook of Chemistry and Physics for most of the text. The remaining entries are definitions of totally unimportant achaic terms.

I recommend this very well written book for reference and study guide. Excellent layout and information. Useful for school and household.

"A measure of Everything" is a sort of encyclopedia of measurement units, but with many other definitions thrown in, without much rhyme or reason: the arpent is defined but the vara not, the Roche Limit defined but Chandrasekhar's not addressed, and transcendental numbers mentioned but not defined. And it is organized rather haphazardly into sections that are not subdivided alphabetically. No matter, the index takes care of that.More to the point there are some technical errors: * the illustration of the vernier (p. 38) shows it reading 5.5 mm, not 5.1 * the calendrists (p. 86) did not ADD 146,000 days every 400 years * an excess of electrons (p. 104) is a negative (notpositive) charge.It is enthralling browsing, but not dependable as a reference work.

The section on 'Time and Calendar', for instance, mostly just notes the Jewish, Gregorian, Islamic, and Hindu calendars with a passing nod at the Chinese and Egyptian calendar.On the other hand, you can still scratch a lot of curious itches: "How do they determine what an 'era' is?" "Just what is Newtonian Time?" (Yes, I know, it's kept you up at night too...)The book is most likely of interest to the generally curious, information nerds, and those with inquisitive children who enjoy learning more about the world around them. A decent reference book on its topic.P.S. A last note: a dictionary format rather than an encyclopedia does allow the book to be small enough to carry about and read in a chair by smaller hands, something my daughter can't do with our Webster's Unabridged Dictionary.

With her world imploding once again, a good friend suggests that she tell Miss Black it is Mr Ferro or no one else. When they come to an agreement & Avery just hopes Sean will go along with it. Will Avery & Sean ever get to finish what they started or is Avery going to be left wondering what could have happened?Another short sassy installment of the Arrangement. It seems every time poor Avery figures something out for her life, life throws another road block in her way. She will have to fight for what she wants & is prepared to do so.

This is one of my favorite serials ever. It’s sexy, sassy, funny and dark.This serial belongs to the dark and brooding Sean Ferro. He’s the first Ferro I was introduced to, and he holds a piece of my heart. As the series start out, Sean is very mysterious, and to be honest – 15 volumes in (when I’m writing this review), he still is a bit of an enigma. There is still a lot to be learned. He’s a dark SOB, this one. He’s got his fetishes, but holy wow is he delicious. And scary. Seriously, I love him – but if I had known him IRL I would have been scared s***less, and kept my distance.Then we have Avery. This girl’s got some spunk. I mean she has to, given that Sean is her love interest. She’s a struggling student when we first meet her, and when her best friend, Mel, realizes this, she reveals what her REAL job is. She’s a high dollar call girl. Ms. Black latches on to Avery immediately, and if Avery just takes one client, it could solve all her problems. She only has to say yes. Problem is she only wants one guy, Sean. Enter: a s***load of trouble.“I’m rewarded, uh, I mean punished, with a slap to my backside.” - AveryThis is an erotic romance, and you can expect some mighty steamy scenes. Some of the volumes more so than others, because there is a hell of a lot going on in this series. The Arrangement, and Sean basically, was the catalyst for all the other books from this same world. Sean has made an appearance is in every spin-off so far. So this is obviously a great place to start if you are curious about H.M. Ward’s books. Just remember to start at the beginning. You would not understand half of what’s going on if you jumped into it halfway through.It’s important to note that this is a fan driven series. Essentially that means that as long as the fans want more, there will be more. And I honestly can’t picture the day we won’t want more. So if that is not for you, I recommend you go pick up something else, because this story has been going on for a good while now, and I certainly hope it will go on for a long time to come – as long as Holly wants it to.Another important note is that these are split up in volumes, and each one end on a cliffhanger (Holly is the queen of cliffhangers). It’s nerve-wracking every time. And it is one of the tings that keep it just as exciting as it was in the beginning. As well as the fact that they’re always fast paced, and it never gets boring. Each volume starts off exactly where the last one left off. I always like to re-read the latest volume before the next one releases because you really get thrown right back into the action without any recaps. It really is kind of built like a TV-show, which is so awesome, because something like that is currently in the works! *fangirls* Just Imagine seeing THE Sean Ferro on screen…

I can tell that I am going to have a love/hate relationship with this series. Avery is pretty consistent in her personality. She is broken and is fearful of losing her scholarship and then living in a cardboard box until she is no more. She is trying to get both her undergraduate and graduate degrees under the same scholarship requirements. It looks like no one helps her to find alternatives in the scholarship area or her minimum wage job. She's in NYC and should be able to get a commission based job that would pay a lot more. Oh well, I am not writing this novel...er chapter.In this CHAPTER, Avery and Sean finally have great sex together. At least Sean knows what he is doing in that area. but then he just leaves. Talk about running hot and cold! He is one mixed up guy. She really needs a Mother or Mel to tell her that he is too mixed up and broken, perhaps worse than she is. That does not make for a happy ending.On to CHAPTER 3

**4.5 Stars**Oh the anticipation! Both Avery and Sean are harboring secrets from one another. Avery needs this job and she wants Sean but feels she shouldn't. Sean apparently feels the same way about wanting Avery. And then there's this darned arrangement between them...This second installment definitely ratcheted up the tension. The will they or won't they, the fun they share getting to know one another, and the remorse and guilt coupled with the lust they feel for one another, it all made for tension so thick you could almost cut it. However, none of my questions were answered.I still don't know who Sean Ferro really is or what deep, dark secrets he hides that send him to a place where he buys his dates. I'm also beginning to wonder if there's more about Avery that I don't yet know. And it's all so compelling.Ward does an excellent job of doling out information and excitement in small enough doses to keep me riveted. I hope once all is revealed that it's worth the price tag because at $3/novella, times 16, it's a pricey, yet irresistible serial.

These cards alone will not give you a passing score. However, they were WELL WORTH the money to have an abbreviated version on important things to know. I would recommend for someone who was on a time crunch, like myself. Just make sure you understand the logic behind the information, pure memorization of the cards won't do it.

The flash cards are extremely helpful. They cover all the material you need to know for the CDE and in great depth. I like that the cards are very portable and easy to take everywhere. I also purchased the book made by the same company. The combination of the book and the cards make an amazing study system for the test. I am sure I will be very prepared when I take the test. Do not hesitate to purchase, you'll be gald you did.
