I had a hard time determining a fair number of stars to give this book. I enjoyed it, but feel it "delivers" on its premise to a very limited extent. I ultimately felt 4 stars was a more fair rating than 3, as I believe some of my expectations, as indicated below, might be a bit out of whack with the book's premise.What I liked:-Taste of the pro poker lifestyle from a variety of perspectives.-Uniform question format allows you to see trending issues and common challenges the range of players face.-Many participants went above and beyond to provide detailed answers, and really drill down into their experiences and practices, which did tend to compensate for some of the respondents addressed in my comments below.What I disliked:-Uniform question format also proved useless in cases where participants provided short answers lacking any depth and providing little in the form of the information that would be expected from the question posed.-No follow up was done on participants that provided limited responses. One respondent in particular, when asked what he does to keep his skills sharp, said "I don't do any of those things" (He was referring to the example responses which are "Books, Training Videos.." among a few other standard examples. I understand this participant many not read books or watch videos, that is fine, but WHAT DO YOU DO if you don't do those things? To not follow up when you get a worthless answer is not only frustrating to readers, but devalues the book as a whole. If it doesn't provide value to the reader, either follow up to further develop the response or don't include the entire participant's "contribution".-I appreciate that the participants were both accessible to the author and consistently profitable, but I really do question the inclusion of some of them into the book considering some of their responses. This does tie in with a previous point, but a few of them were so unimpressive and provided so little information that it was almost annoying and made you actually question why you just spent a few minutes reading what they had to say. That should have been considered more and edited accordingly.Conclusion and Suggestions:Real Grinders? Yes. How to play poker for a living? Yes and no.If this premise were to be adequately addressed, would have been nice to see a summary list at end of each interview with suggestions, recommended books/videos/coaches/forums, best practices, etc based on that particular response in order to provide key takeaways. An aggregate list at the end of the book with the most common recommendations would have made this book a huge hit in the community of players that are on the fence about committing full time.While the book overall was enjoyable, and did provide some very useful anecdotes, tips, expectations and a solid sample of the grinder lifestyle, I would have gladly paid twice what I paid for it to see responses with more depth, as well as some of the suggestions in the previous paragraph.If you are interested in playing poker full time and want get a taste, this book will deliver. As I said previously, there are a few participants in the book that provide so much value to the reader they carry the book in themselves, as they provide POVs and tips you might not easily find doing a quick forum search.For the price, I would recommend it!

This book is so much more then just the insight of the lives of some of the best poker players the world has ever seen.... Its also a book about life.Through this book, Mr Cartwright has taught me how to laugh, how to cry and how to love. I experienced the full scale of human emotions while reading this book plus a few more which i found both deeply confusing and exciting.Now im no expert on the process through which people must go through in order to be knighted, but I'd say this book is resume enough!Not only is Mr Cartwright clearly the leading authority on all things spiritual, psychological, sexual, biological, emotional, cosmological, philosophical and ecologicalbut hes also a great listener (hear that ladies?)as it is obvious that Mr Cartwright is the second coming of Christ i put forward that the next edition of "Read Grinders: How to Play Poker for a Living" be renamed as "the third testament" and should be analysed by young children in order for them to learn how to be a good personWhen people ask me what i would say to Mr Cartwright when i arrive at the pearly gates its this..... thank you sir. thank you for such a wonderful book. thank you for the goodness and love and wonder you have impregnated the world with through the vehicle of this book.

I have read this mystery innumerable times and still enjoy it. As a writer and a reader, I am always entranced by the narrative flow that AC managed to sustain in her books. The writing carries the reader along until you realize you've been standing at the kitchen counter for 45 minutes reading just another few pages. You think, this could never happen, but you just keep reading. The milieux and plots, while certainly not early 21 century, are by no means as dated as some of the other writers from the golden age of mystery. I think of Miss Silver--and I enjoy those books immensely--but the mores and romantic attachments are dated. AC seems to have lifted her writing to a slightly higher, more timesless place.

Definitely one of the weakest Poirot novels. It reads to me like a very elderly lady, which Christie was, trying to understand the swinging 60's London scene through her characters and getting it all wrong. Kind of sad and depressing to be honest. Skip it and go for the earlier Poirot novels.

Another Agatha Christie's masterpiece. The unforgettable and unsinkable Ariadne Olivier figures as a very important character, bringing much spark to the plot. Hercule Poirot, as always, is outstanding.A highly recommendable classic.

Back in the day, many years ago, reading an Agatha Christie was must reading. After reading John Curran'a book Agatha Christie's secret notebooks, I decided to re-visit Hercule Poirot. So far I have read 30 and the third girl ranks amoung the top 25. Red herrings, mystery,a story line that keeps you guessing and of course Hercule with his friend Mrs Oliver, (she is Agatha Christie's ulta ego). A missing girl, who claims she shot someone, or so she thinks, and her friends think nothing about not seeing her for days, including her family. When Agatha wrote this book it was in the '30's, and still today it is timeless. Did she kill someone, is she really missing, and why did she think Hercule was to old to help her?

I only wish there were more Hercule Poirot books because I think I've read them all. Oh, except for the "last one." I haven't read that yet. Saving it for special occasion. You know the one that was found after Christie died. The Third Girl certainly isn't her best - but what could compete with Orient Express or one of my own favorites - Murder in the Clouds.But this one is good because it brings back the apple-eating mystery writer. I always see her as a good way for Christie to voice her own opinions on the writing process.

A different rythem to this Agatha Christie/Hercule Poirot Mystery. Very interesting story and I really enjoyed it but there were sections were Poirot is musing about the case in his mind that seem to go on forever. Still I enjoyed the book and I'm glad I bought it but it is a slower read than usual for Chrisite.

Maybe I am stupid about these things but I was wrong about the killer to the last few pages. No Poirot, me. It was an enjoyable read and I particular like the Poirot books where Ariadne plays a major or at least synergistic role.

It's not one of her VERY best but it has long been one of my personal favorites because Mrs. Oliver is Poirot's "Hastings," & their combination is fascinating. If you want to find out about "Mod England" of the 1960's, there's a lot here about that too. Of course, there's the usual convoluted plot and interesting characters. And it was WONDERFUL to read big print & not strain to enjoy a novel!! Betty Willard.

Judge Posner's "Reflections" is a readable and witty overview of the challenges facing the judiciary and legal profession in a time of increasingly complex cases.Judge Posner invites lawyers and judges to tackle the increased complexity of the law in at least three ways. First, he urges lawyers and judges to use pictures and simplify their briefs and opinions. For example, he writes that "seeing a case makes it come alive to judges," yet "[l]awyers' lack of a visual sense . . . is a striking professional deformity. I do not understand it. Information can often be presented more efficiently in pictorial than verbal form." He also tells lawyers and judges to use "coloring book" facts, such as stories or other background material (even if outside the record) to help the reader understand "the technological or commercial setting of a case."Second, despite his reputation as a legal theorist, Judge Posner has practical tips to improve jury trials based on his experiences from serving as a trial judge. Among other things, he advocates time limits on trials and recommends that judges use more frequently their power to appoint neutral experts.Third, Judge Posner presents his "Posner model" of avoiding excessive reliance on junior lawyers or clerks preparing briefs and opinions. He correctly observes that the growth of associates in law firms and law clerks in the federal courts has contributed to the unnecessary lengthening of briefs and opinions. He goes as far as to present an opinion from a federal appeals court that takes up several pages of text and compares his version, which takes a little more than a page. The difference is striking.In short, Judge Posner's "Reflections" should help lawyers and judges to argue and rule more effectively and with more style and more professional satisfaction. Hopefully, in the process, this will improve the public's confidence in the judicial system.

It is easy to see from this book why Judge Posner has become the most frequently cited legal commentator. His range of interests is immense, ranging from law and economics, to national security issues, to the 2000 election, and various jurisprudential topics. Recently, he has focused on his colleagues, federal judges, in several books. This book continues that interest. It is diverse in topics and approaches; but always informative and stimulating.First, to illustrate how one can be selected for the federal judiciary, he devotes the introductory chapter to a brief autobiography. He is particularly interested in suggesting issues that new judges should consider as they ascend the bench. He also introduces one of his major concerns: increasing technical "complexity" that faces judges as they adjudicate challenging cases.To fill in background, Posner next discusses the evolution of the federal judiciary. He raises here several of his fundamental concerns: excessive growth of staff; should law clerks on the appellate level be assigned initial drafting responsibility for opinions (a vehement no!); and the adoption of basic managerial tools to structure judicial caseloads.A third chapter is devoted to his key concern of "complexity." I found this very long chapter not to be particularly effective. He does a better and shorter job on this in his Introduction to the book. One important point that does emerge is that courts may generate their own complexity by deciding cases in a "formalistic" way rather than employing a realistic approach. This reflects Posner's recent shift toward pragmatism in his writings. He develops this theme in depth in his chapter four. Basically instead of conventional legal analysis, Posner wants judges to employ more practical sense and concern about the consequences of their decisions. I think this is one of his most crucial points and this chapter bears careful reading.Posner argues that appellate records are often insufficient. Surprisingly, to me at least, he advocates that appellate judges freely utilize Google research to fill out inadequate factual records. More use should be made of maps and pictures in opinions to help clarify decisions. Counsel who argue appellate cases should find this chapter of particular interest.A most interesting chapter is on "coping strategies." These are techniques appellate judges can use to avoid resolving complexities they face in cases. Judicial self-restraint comes in for a challenging working over by Posner. A particularly rich chapter discusses the very concept of interpretation. His target here is (not for the first time) Justice Scalia's originalism, as discussed in depth in his book (co-authored with Brian Gardner) "Reading Law." By the time his extensive analysis is concluded, its brutal efficiency leaves little of the Scalia approach still standing. This is as fine an example of masterful legal analysis as I have seen. Given all the fussing over how to interpret statutes and the Constitution, this chapter makes a significant contribution to bringing some clarity to this debate.Several more chapters are directed at the appellate process. Tips on opinion writing and appellate advocacy comprise chapter 8. In the next chapter, Posner recounts why he recommends that appellate judges without trial experience spend some time presiding (as they may) over district court trials. Chapter 10 discusses additional recommendations to improve the appellate process. A conclusion raps it all up.So, Posner covers a large amount of ground in 370 pages. This is one of those books where reading the footnotes (which are actually footnotes) is essential. Sometimes the judge does go on a bit too long in making a point (witness the complexity chapter); but if this is "fat" I am all for it. One of the most stimulating books one can read on the federal appellate judiciary, which what with the recent filibuster modifications, is as always heating up as an issue.

I am a private piano teacher and mom and love the Alfred series. I have used it for years and love the huge variety of fun, classical, spiritual, etc. that it offers. There is something for everyone!

I have been a pianist for the last 25 years, and my 5 year old daughter decided she wanted to learn. We don't have any instructors in our city, so I decided I could teach her in the beginning. I remembered using the Alfred books when I began lessons, so I was happy to see they were still in print! I ordered the Alfred's Basic Piano Course Lesson Book, Theory, and Technic (Level 1). They are meant to go together.The books are well laid out and simple for a child to follow. My 5 year old is an early reader, and with me, she has no problem following these books. They are illustrated and the print is large.The books will let you know when to incorporate the lessons from the Theory and Technic books, as the lessons taught will coincide and help build on each other.In the beginning, your child will learn the basics on reading music, but for the first half of the books, a numbered finger system will be used in place of a traditional staff. This is to build your child's ability to use their separate fingers correctly.If you are using this as a parent to teach your own child, my only advice is to go slowly and patiently. Make sure that the child understands and is using the correct technic before moving ahead. It is a simple book, but speed is not key. This takes time and practice in order to build confidence.This is the perfect first lesson book.

I have been teaching private piano lessons for 15 years and I am delighted with the Alfred series. This book specifically has quite a few songs that the kids will recognize. It starts by introducing the dotted quarter not, which is often difficult for students. It ends with great coverage of the primary chords, I, IV, V7. I love the approach Alfred takes to introducing those chords, then using them so much for the accompaniment. At first the kids are always very confused by it, but by the end of the book, they recognize them easily in all their pieces and can name them without any trouble. Be aware that some of the supplements in the series are substantially harder than the corresponding lesson book.

The Alfred's Basic Piano Prep Course book is the perfect addition for any new piano player. These basic piano teaching books are easy to follow, easy to read, and easy to teach. The pages are filled with a good use of white space. The book itself is made of good quality and I do not feel that they will easily deteriorate. I believe that these books by Alfred's Basic Piano Prep are the basic books for piano knowledge and a great place to start a beginner. I have already purchased other of the Alfred's Basic Piano Prep Course books and will continue to purchase from this publisher. I have also steered my student's toward purchasing their own sets of these books to help with practicing outside of the classroom setting. These books will definitely stay around in my teaching library for years to come!! I look forward to seeing what other prep books are written and how they supplement the current books!

I would call myself a beginner piano teacher, as I play the piano myself but have had no instruction as to how to teach others to play. I now have four beginner students, whom I have been teaching for a little over a year.I love the Alfred method. The four books: technic, lesson, solo/recital, and theory all seem to really work well together. The songs coordinate with each other, so for each new concept taught in the lesson books, the student has a warm-up, a solo piece, and some theory work to back it up. I find this to be very effective. It gives the students a chance to see several examples of each concept, and practice each new concept in different ways until they achieve perfection with it. It also really walks the teacher through each concept very clearly, giving definitions for musical terms and clear instructions for which songs go together. I feel like the order in which concepts are taught also makes a lot of sense.Overall, it's a good method for a teacher who doesn't know a whole lot about HOW to teach another person to play the piano!I currently have some of my students on this level, and others on the regular beginner levels. I love how all of the different levels are interchangeable, so gifted students can advance more quickly, and students who need a little extra reinforcement can stay on the lower levels. The map for how this all works is on the back of all of the books, which you can see on the book preview. So many great things about Alfred!

This product arrived within a few days of ordering. It was in pristine condition. I use this set of books because they are what my piano teacher prefers to teach from. Although the book says for later beginners, it should be a bit more specific. It is definitely not designed for adult learners (the songs are geared more toward children or adolescents). I do not mind so much, but others might. All in all a great buy. I recommend the seller. Delivered as promised and had a very accurate description of product. I am very pleased.

I have more than a full collection of Christmas piano books for my students. I have one young student who is currently in the Alfred B lesson book. It sticks mostly to the C position and does not introduce the Middle C position. I purchased this book specifically for her to have songs in her usual position. Turns out this book is completely in the Middle C position. I'll probably keep it because it has teacher duets, but I'd still recommend the Bastien Christmas books over this series. The layout is cleaner and the pictures are more enticing.

One of my favorite movies - I think I love looking at the interiors of the beautiful house they used as well as seeing the movie. Anyway, it was great!
