My 7th grade students used this book to supplement our reading of the first novel in the series, The Ghost in the Tokaido Inn. The Hooblers did a great job creating characters that help readers understand the world of medieval Japan. We even contacted the Hooblers to ask some questions about the books, and they graciously responded.

My 14 year old daughter gives this 5 stars! She loved it and the previous book as well!

The Demon in the Teahouse is another hit for another hit for Dorothy Hoobler. This series is a wonderful read for both young and old. The students in my fourth grade class love these books!

A fantastic follow up to an amazing original story. Though this story takes place in the pleasure district of ancient Edo in Japan, it does a good job weaving a tight story about love and honor with out being seedy in any way. A great read to remind one about what honor is really is.

The Hooblers just keep on giving more to contemplate.

Interesting plot. Well written.

We tend to focus on the latest and greatest cool feature, though we don't relate why the tech is important or what was the grand idea behind it very well. We especially don't show why it's personal. I've presented at industry conferences before but never seemed to get the great feedback that I sought. I got a copy of Steal The Show to improve my presentations.I got more than I anticipated. Steal The Show is a book that demands your time to get the most out of it. If you follow the content and do the work, the results are going to amaze you. It will take time to digest this information as this isn't a read once and never pick up again kind of book. I find myself referring back to it over and over again.I first expected to read a book on making better speeches. Instead, my whole viewpoint and approach was changed. I must say that Michael has ruined me. After reading this book, I won't ever be able to sit through another mediocre presentation. I can now tell when the speaker threw the presentation together on the plane to the event. My expectations have been permanently raised for both other presenters and myself.Steal The Show provides a different thought process for developing and delivering your speeches than found in other speaking books. It goes beyond mere speaking techniques and into full blown performance planning and delivery. My biggest ah-ha moment was learning to approach it as a performance instead of a speech and that the performance starts much earlier than when you start speaking.I was asked to give a project management presentation on resource capacity. I had given it previously to lukewarm results. The presentation was dry and facts heavy. The audience usually sat through most of it but I always lost a lot of people toward the end.Using the techniques in the book, I reimagined and transformed it into a true performance on why we should be working less hours to be more productive. I made it personal, communicating how these changes had a direct impact on my family. Part of my issue was that the big idea was getting lost in the details. I had to put in the time developing the content, scripting it, reading it out loud and rehearsing it. The scripting process was new for me as I tended to outline the content and wing it from there. Reading it out loud was something that I had never done but it made a huge difference in the sound. When you are making your decisions about what to say in rehearsal instead of in real-time, your performance is easier to give.I also stopped agonizing over the slides using the STS process. Once I had done the appropriate rehearsal, I know the performance well enough to do it without slides, which I almost had to do. Thankfully, the point on doing a tech check saved me. We discovered the projector bulb had burned out and being the first presenter, I wouldn't have had slides.I am a much more effective public speaker today thanks to the Steal The Show techniques. I could hardly wait for another great Jodi Thomas read but this book turned into my least favorite of all. The scene where Rose entered her room and encountered Duncan felt like the Jodi Thomas settings that whisked her readers into those 'feel-good' stories. But after that short intro, so little of her story centered around the couple that the book was supposed to be about that I struggled to even finish the book.The Whispering Mountain series was wonderful...a showcase for an author of incredible talent. But with this book, sadly, it lacked that magical Jodi Thomas touch.

While the pairing of Rose and Duncan was never hinted at or even commented upon in previous Whispering Mountains books, fans of the series couldn't help feeling there was a chance they might be paired together. So, when I saw this was Rose's story, I was thrilled and pre-ordered it right away.The story started out good. However, the summary is very misleading because I felt Rose was never in danger because of Duncan. The outlaw gang is not determined to kill her. I doubt they even know who Rose is. Rose's friend is more likely to put Rose in danger than Duncan is. I never got into the plot because the point of view was always changing. There was too many characters and each chapter was about a different character. Like earlier reviews have said, the secondary characters were more interesting than the main characters. I never understood Rose or Duncan. I went back to count and out of the 51 chapters, half of them were about Rose or Duncan or both (Also, keep in mind that some of the chapters were really short. Some were only a 2-page conversation). I don't even know how they fell in love with each other since most of their back story was told in short descriptions.My biggest problem is Duncan's past and the romantic relationship wasn't answered. Apparently, Duncan has been looking into his past and he has a letter that he never opened with information about his birth parents, his real name and age. This exploration of Duncan into his past is never explained. Also, besides mentioning what might be in the letter and that he wanted to open it with Rose by his side, the letter is never mentioned again.The second question I had that Thomas never answered is the pairing of Rose and Duncan. Yes, they are not blood-related and were both adopted by the McMurrays so they can marry each other. However, they ARE cousins (meaning they were raised to see each other as cousins). They introduce themselves to people as cousins. What I found strange is the romance between the two was never questioned by them, their friends or the people around them. Also, I can't help wondering what the McMurray family would think of the pairing? Did they know Rose was going to end up with Duncan? We are given so little information about their past that it's hard to speculate when they started having feelings for each other.I always enjoyed a Jodi Thomas' book, especially her earlier books. She always has great characters, interesting plot, and engaging conversations. That being said, while this story is easy to read, it wasn't on par with the other Whispering Mountains books mainly because her writing style was different. The story was incomplete. After finishing the book, I felt there was a WILD TEXAS ROSE 2 somewhere. To me, the writing was very similar to Jodi Thomas' Harmony series. While the different perspectives worked in the Harmony series, it didn't work here because this is one book not a series. 320 pages is not enough to effectively flesh out 2 main characters and 6 secondary characters. If you enjoyed the Harmony series, you might like this. However, don't read this expecting Rose and Duncan's love story, you won't get it.

I'm not sure how I feel about this book. Normally, the Whispering Mountain series is really good, but this time it seems like Ms. Thomas just gave up. In addition to the romance between Rose and Duncan, Ms. Thomas decided to add not one, not two, but three additional romances in this one book. Juggling four couples' struggles to find love and happiness means that a few things had to fall through the cracks, and, unfortunately, the story between Rose and Duncan was one of those things. Oh, wait; I just remembered there is a fifth (or is it sixth?) storyline in this book-that of long lost brothers finding each other. It seems that Rose and Duncan getting together was an afterthought; something to be done in the last paragraph of the last chapter-kind of like she completely forgot she was writing about Rose and Duncan. Duncan spends most of this book injured and vulnerable, not what one expects of a seasoned Texas Ranger who is supposed to be the hero of the story. Rose ends up being both hero and heroine, with a healed Duncan making an appearance at the end, to which Rose says: "It's about time you showed up." I guess we are supposed to assume they live happily ever after with that snarky comment. I think the Rose and Duncan story needed more developing and a couple of the side stories should have been left out-especially since they'll never be heard about again in the one remaining book of the series.

Nice map but useless for trips to Bryce Canyon where the trails are easy to follow and the NPS provides enough info in their newspaper.If you're buying this to plan a trip to Bryce Canyon you will be disappointed, at least I was.I feel these Nat Geo maps are nice but almost useless. Of course all maps are useful but the cost benefit for this map is not good.

It is a good topo map of the area. Although it states that it is updated regularly, don't believe it. Even though many have noted that there are no mileage, nor good side elevations counters of the trails, they are still not on the maps. You still need to make those up from others sources. No good excuse for that purposeful oversight.

These National Geographic Maps are phenomenal. They feel like a waxy paper but if you try to do a small tear along the edge it stretches instead of tearing like paper so they seem to be made from a plastic paper instead. So that is how they are waterproof and tear proof. I found the detail really good with great hiking information and some geological information on many of these maps.

We went to Utah and visited several National Parks. These maps were great. We did several 15 mile hikes and 40 mile bike rides, without these maps we would have gotten lost. They are very detailed and help you stay on course.

These trails illustrated maps are the first thing I order when I'm traveling to national forest or park to hike and camp. Besides being virtually indestructible they are invaluable with all the information one would need.

Love NGM maps as they are so detailed and helpful for hiking, etc. Purchase them for all the planned vacations as they are full of information and correspond nicely with hiking books and hiking programs like All Trails.

Very good companion to a Bryce Canyon guidebook. The paper quality is excellent and this map will avoid tears and damage due to moisture. It is a good carry-on-the hike companion or as a planning guide to get a feel for the topography of various trails.

This map is a great quality map but the free map at the park provided more detail on some of the more popular trails. If I was backpacking or taking one of the longer hikes I'd bring this along, if not I'd save my money for another SD card because you'll be taking tons of pictures at Bryce.
