I am a busy mother of two young children, including an exclusively breastfed infant. I have done several Whole30s and am looking to return to eating paleo for a number of reasons. I try to do as much food prep and cooking as possible on the weekend, particularly as I am about to return to work and have very little time for meal preparation on weeknights. I am not new to paleo eating, but do need quick-to-prepare meals that will appeal to my starch-and-carb loving husband and 3 year old without breaking the budget, so I was optimistic about Paleo Lunches and Breakfasts on the Go.I made and enjoyed several of the wrap recipes, including the Chicken and Peach Firecracker Wrap, Roast Beef and Beets Wrap, and Avocado, Orange, and Herb Chicken Wrap. None of them took TOO long to prepare (although I admit I used a precooked chicken and bought precooked beets among other shortcuts) and all could easily have been reworked as salads rather than wraps. I'm looking forward to trying some of the "cook and run" wraps and salads, too.Most of the soups/chilis appear to take a lot of effort and time to prepare. The author specifically says that she doesn't like slow cookers, and a quick survey of the recipes in this section indicate that many can't really be modified for the crock pot. While this portion of the cookbook doesn't meet my needs, the recipes do sound and look appealing.The Sweet Potato Apple Cinnamon pancakes were quite nice, although took an excessive amount of time to prepare. I made a double batch and between grating the apples and mashing the cooked sweet potato, then cooking the pancakes in a 10" skillet on the stove, it took well over an hour for one recipe. Despite following instructions to the letter, my pancakes remained uncooked in the center which gave an unpleasant texture. The Cherry Tarragon Breakfast Sausages were a treat but also took forever to cook; I would only make either recipe again with an electric griddle so as to cook all portions at once.In short, while there are some new and interesting flavor combinations in this cookbook, for me the most utility will be in the wraps and salads. For paleo cookbooks for busy people with limited cooking time every day, I still prefer Well Fed: Paleo Recipes for People Who Love to Eat and Paleo Slow Cooking: Gluten Free Recipes Made Simple.Eat Like a Dinosaur: Recipe & Guidebook for Gluten-free Kids will be of far more utility for those with young children, although many of these recipes would appeal to tweens and teens.Be advised that the Kindle version has many glaring typos and several omissions. Additionally rather than having a full featured recipe index, the reader is instructed to use the e-reader search feature to find the recipe you're looking for! It is frustrating to spend good money on an e-book and have it obviously be an afterthought to author and/or publisher.

I bought this for a friend who is very conscientious about health and nutrition. She LOVES this book, and is learning so much more. Recipes are easy and delicious. Ingredients can be found at any local market

I didn't find the recipes in this book very easy, which was what I was thinking I would be getting based on the description. My life is way too busy for the prep time needed for many of these recipes, though the recipes themselves are very good. Just not worth the cost for me, as I just don't have time for these.

The recipes in here are mouthwatering. I have only made a few. I haven't figured out how to have all this stuff on hand to whip the lunches together, so figuring out the dinners where the leftovers come in will be more helpful.The cherry and tarragon sausages were easy and the best I have made. I really am glad I bought this book and it is inspiring to see into the author's farm life. She lives it. ps. I have been paleo for almost 3 years.

I love this book! I don't claim to have gone Paleo, but I am working towards that idea and I have lost a few pounds heading that way! I take my lunch to work and sandwiches and carbs always end up in the mix. This book gave me a lot of ideas for lettuce wraps...I love the one with a piece of bacon, tomato and their easy home made mayo! Yum! The photos are great and inspire me to cook! Most of these recipes are easy and easy to pack! I highly recommend this book!

Delicious recipes. I don't always stick to paleo myself, but I do like to prepare paleo meals for friends and family that everyone will enjoy. These recipes are a pleasure to prepare, eat and share.

Its real value, however, is in providing a compendium of flavor and ingredient combinations that can be used to create entirely different recipes...all of them quick, simple, and of course, paleo!!!

This book is superb for making finger foods by using leftovers in wraps. This is similar, to making sandwiches, but tastier, and probably healthier as well. Truly you can eat these at work, at school, while shopping, and just generally on-the-go. No plates or silverware needed, although a napkin might be handy.Some preplanning my be required, but in general, if you plan your weekly menus, it comes easily. (i.e.) Instead of roasting one chicken that will feed your family for just one meal, try roasting two. Same time, same energy cost, for twice the product. Then debone and throw the bones and scraps from both chickens into a large pot for making homemade broth. That's good "home economics" by definition!

News to me, our 2016 Berkshire will run more than half that price - and we consider we are getting a pretty top of the line unit. LOTS of people get very good Class A's in the $100-150K range.Class C motorhomes are SMALLER than Class B? Do Tell?! Last I checked it was the other way around my friend.To be fair, the information given in Chapter 7 (Resources) is adequate.All in all this is a very basic book that barely covers all the aspects of going full time (something we have been researching and planning on for 2+ years) I really had high hopes for this book but unfortunately the author has no clue about RVs. It's a good thing I did! There's lot of things to think about that most people wouldn't realize (taxes, where you can park, what to do with your mail, where to claim residence, etc). This book really hit on each of those topics along with the obvious ones as well. I found it very interesting as to which states are "RV Friendly" and is definitely something to consider if you are going to jump into "RV Living"! If you are considering purchasing an RV, then I would definitely recommend this book!

There's helpful info here on RVing. I like how the book is laid out. The author starts with the pros and cons of the RVing lifestyle. Then he gets into the practical matters of making it happen, chief among them, how to pick an RV (if you don't already have one). He covers some things I would not have thought of, like downsizing and a mailing address. And the author also provides resources at the end of the book for your new RV life. The info is presented clearly and in an easy to read fashion. Overall, this book is a good resource on beginning a full time RV lifestyle and is worth checking out. Recommended.

This book makes it very clear to me that I am not willing to give up my home for full time RVing. When I was younger, I may have enjoyed RV traveling, but I'm not sure I would ever want to give up my home for it. In other words, I don't think I would want to go full time. After hearing some of the expenses of living full-time in an RV, I am sure it would not be as good a bargain, as far as expense goes, as my home. I would recommend this book for someone thinking about doing this. I cannot say whether it is the "best" or "worst" out there, but it was enough info for me.

Short but very usefull guide if you want to start your new life in an RV. I am fantasyzing with the idea of one day change my home for an RV. Although I don't know anything bout RV's, so this book has given me a very good introduction on this incredible vehicles. i was not expecting such a well written history of "the Dark Ages" after reading so many of the negative reviews. I will admit it takes your full attention and is not a "pop history" as many "history books" are these days. It is written in a very detailed, scholarly style , although I don't agree that the author was using overly complex sentence structures or words. If you are truly interested in early middle age period, this is a good book to study, albeit you would do good to have some basic early middle age history knowledge prior to reading this book (as then it won't seem like the author is "just reading a dictionary or phone book"). If you know the basic outline and names of the period, it will still require your concentration to get the most out of it. It seems the author has a vast array of knowledge of the period and tries to fit as much in as possible, which I very much like, and the author is qualified to write such a book (as is a professor of this period of history at Oxford University)

Like the earlier book, The Inheritance of Rome is more concerned with the uses the people of the era made of their understanding of the past than with giving a straightforward chronology of the era. In other words, this book deals with the inheritance the Roman Empire bequeathed to the peoples living in the centuries after its collapse in the West. These peoples, whether of the post Roman kingdoms of Western Europe, the Roman remnant of the Byzantine Empire in the East, or the Islamic invaders made differing uses of the institutions and cultural norms left behind by the Romans, each society adapting Roman ways to their particular needs.The Inheritance of Rome covers the centuries between 400 and 1000. While these endpoints may seem somewhat arbitrary, in neither case do they indicate any sort of sharp division, they nevertheless are appropriate as the endpoints for the transformation of Europe from a continent dominated by a centralized empire to the decentralized, feudal Europe of the Central Middle Ages. At the beginning of this period, the Roman Empire was still the same empire that had existed for centuries. No one could have guessed that the western half of the empire would soon be overrun by invaders within 80 years would be gone. For centuries afterwards, no one quite believed that the Roman Empire had actually passed away and much of the history of the Early Middle Ages is the history of trying to restore the Empire, culminating in the great Carolingian project.The Carolingians very consciously made use of the rhetoric of restoration in their policies. They sought to create a universal Christian Empire and were, at least in theory, concerned with the souls of their subjects as much as their lives. The project failed in the end when the Carolingian dynasty died out. The Ottonians tried to continue this legacy, but Europe, under attack from Vikings, Arabs, and others was less inclined to see itself as a whole towards the end of this period. In fact, starting in the middle tenth century, we can begin to speak of the modern nations of Europe, France, Germany, etc. Europe was beginning to grow beyond the inheritance of Rome.The period covered in this book is often referred to as the Dark Ages. Wickham deals with this question through his book. On the one hand, the era was not nearly as dark as is sometimes supposed. There were some strong continuities between the society and institutions of the Roman Empire and the post-Roman polities that succeeded it. The Germans invaders did not simply sweep away Roman institutions and customs, but were rather, eager to adopt Romans ways. On the other hand, Wickham describes a clear simplification and localization of the economies of the entire region, particularly in the centuries of the worst crises, about 500-700. There was a step backwards for much of the region for which the reasons are not entirely known.The Inheritance of Rome is an excellent way to learn about an interesting and important period of our past.

Reading this book is like being on a frenetically-driven tour bus with the guide breathlessly dropping the names of the sights as you whiz past. The writing is bloodless, unable to spark the imagination, which is unfortunate for such a mysterious and romantic period of history. I retained very little, and feel compelled to find a better read on this subject.

The period 400-1000 is a blank spot in the minds of most people, even for those who know a great deal about Rome and medieval Europe. What we do tend to know are a handful of decontextualized names (e.g. Charlemagne) and some stock images of bearded men in leather armor killing each other. Wickham, then, was faced with a formidable task: not just to introduce his readers to the Ostrogoths, the Merovingian kingdom, etc., but also to disabuse us of popularly held notions, like the precipitous fall of Rome in 476 or the discontinuities between Rome and its 'barbarian' successor states.It's for this reason that I strongly disagree with the reviews complaining that this book has too many details, and should not have been marketed to a general audience. The many details are not the intended "takeaway" of this book. Rather, Wickham presents us with such rich anecdotes so that long after the names and events vanish from memory, readers will be left with a deep (and accurate) feel for post-Roman culture, society, and government. Given how shallow (and inaccurate) my feel for post-Roman Europe was before reading Wickham's book, I consider his book extremely effective.On the dust jacket, a reviewer describes Wickham's writing as "pointillist." I think this description is apt. As with pointillist paintings, this work's intent can only be comprehended after you take a step back from the anecdotes. Wickham's prose is only difficult if you get too worried about remembering that Sidonius Apollinaris was so-and-so's son-in-law, lived in Clermont in the 5th century, etc. General readers need not worry about the details - Just keep on reading, and be confident that you will finish the book with a different understanding of 400-1000 AD than when you started.

A running theme of the work is the importance of collaboration and reworking old ideas. Grant highlights how scientists are often in dialogue with one another—this conversation is essential to scientific advancement. In his introduction, Grant acknowledges the lack of diversity (in regard to gender) in most representations of scientists and admits that his selection process reflects his personal judgment. There are a fair amount of women scientists covered. However, the focus is squarely on Western achievement (scientists from Asia, Africa, or South America are largely omitted). Attention is brought to those who were dismissed because of prejudice, for example, Lise Meitner, Ignaz Semmelweis, and Émilie du Châtelet. The writing is very approachable, although at times a bit too colloquial (Semmelweis's coworkers are referred to as a "stupid bunch"). VERDICT More for pleasure reading than reports. This book is full of insights into scientific pioneers both professional and personal. From B.C. to modern times, details explaining theories and interesting tidbits of each scientist fill this easy to read informational book - 4 stars!

This is a collection of mini biographies of some of the great scientists who have contributed to our current understanding of ourselves, our world and the universe we live in. In his introduction, John Grant points out that any selection is going to be subjective to a degree, but all the major names are here – Galileo, Newton, Einstein, etc. - as well as several who are less well known, certainly to me. The book is aimed at teens and young adults, but frankly it works equally well for older adults like me, who have only a superficial knowledge of the history of science.Each section follows roughly the same pattern. Grant quickly places the person in the overall timeline of scientific discovery, gives a short personal biography showing how they got involved in their particular area of science, and then explains their major achievements and, in some cases, their failures. The chapters vary in length, from a couple of pages for those people who made one specific contribution to science – like Edward Jenner, the man who discovered that cowpox could be used to create a vaccine for smallpox, leading eventually to its worldwide eradication (why didn't I know about him?!) – to perhaps ten or so pages for those, like Newton or Einstein, who fundamentally changed the perception of the fields in which they worked. The book is structured chronologically, which allows Grant to show very clearly how each generation of scientists built on the work of those before them – in Newton's words: “If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.”Grant's writing style is clear and very approachable, never talking down to his audience, and with a good deal of humour laced through the book to prevent the science becoming too dry. He makes the science side clear enough on the whole for even the more scientifically challenged amongst us to understand, at least until we get to relativity and quantum thingummyjigs, at which point my eyes began to roll in my head and my tongue lolled out. However, that's my normal reaction to these things, so I don't hold Grant to blame – he almost got me to sorta understand why the whole E = mc2 thing was important, which is more than many science writers have done. And I briefly felt I'd grasped the Schrödinger's cat thing too... but the moment passed. (I've always felt it would have been of more practical benefit if Schrödinger had explained how to get a cat in a box, myself...)But the science is only part of it. The book is as much about the history of scientific research and gives an unvarnished glimpse at some of the jealousies and backstabbing that happen in that world as much as in any other. Grant shows how sometimes female scientists would be sidelined or have credit for their work taken by their male colleagues, often only being given recognition decades or even centuries after the event. To be fair, this happened to plenty of male scientists too, either because they were outside the snobby scientific community or simply from professional rivalries getting out of hand. Men heavily outnumber women in the book, but this is to be expected since, as Grant points out, until very recently (and still, in some parts of the world) science wasn't considered a suitable occupation for the “gentler sex”. Hah! Tell that to Marie Curie, or Émilie du Châtelet! Mostly, though, the story is one of co-operation and collaboration, especially when the book brings us towards the present day.Each chapter ends with a little summary of factlets, such as whether the scientist has had any comets, craters, prizes etc named after her/him, plus suggestions for further reading, and information about films or music that may have been based on or inspired by her/him. These sections, I should warn you, can be fatal to your to-be-read and to-be-watched piles...In summary, I think this is an excellent book, informative, well written and well presented, that gives an overview of the science and scientists which is easily digestible without feeling superficial. Science has changed since I was a girl (they've discovered the Earth isn't flat, for a start) and scientific writers have realised they have to make the subject interesting if they want young people to be attracted into it. This book does that – Grant writes with a warm enthusiasm and respect for the work these scientists do, without ever setting them up as unapproachable objects of reverence. He includes not just the great theoreticians whose ideas about the workings of the universe may be quite hard for the layperson to really grasp, but also more practical scientists, making a difference to our day-to-day lives, in medical research, climatology, computing, etc.I read it straight through and enjoyed getting a feeling for the timeline of science, but this would also work very well as a reference book to look up or remind oneself of what a particular scientist is noted for. Highly recommended for any young person from about 13 up, I'd say, and for any adult who would just like to know a bit more about the subject.NB This book was kindly provided for review by the author, whom I know via the blogging world. However, the review reflects my honest opinion.

He is a prolific author of fiction and non-fiction books.In this book, Grant offers vivid biographies of fifty important people (in order of birth) who have helped humanity understand our universe in some way. He does not focus just on their ideas and breakthroughs that made them so important but also on their lives and their various quirks.The author realizes that his list is “a matter of personal judgement” and that some readers may object to certain inclusions and omissions. That’s O.K. However, I did find that if you removed any of the people on Grant’s list, the wonderful story of science would probably be a different story.Throughout this book, are black and white pictures of most of those people on the author’s list. As well, at the beginning of each biography is a summary of the person being profiled. I have given five of these summaries above. At the end of each biography, there’s a “But there’s more…” section that gives that lists interesting facts about the person being profiled and gives suggestions for further reading.This book’s subtitle is “50 scientists who shaped human history.” Actually, this is not quite true. Even though the majority of people profiled in this book are scientists (such as astronomer, biologist, and chemist), some are not (such as mathematician, philosopher, and monk). The important thing to remember is that all the people listed significantly helped shape the history of science in some way.Yes! If you look at this book’s copyright section (which is in small print), you’ll see the phrase “Young Adult Nonfiction.” Personally, I don’t like this phrase because it suggests that this book has been dumbed down. It definitely has not. This book is appropriate for older adults as well.Finally, the only problem I had with this book is that there are no references. The concise and well written material on 50 selected scientists covering the ages will enlighten, delight and possibly inspire further study. John Grant has written a beautifully seductive book that will encourage further study on any given topic that particularly interests students. I have the paperback book, and I think it is designed attractively with the perfect presentation for short discussions that could be followed up with further research. I am long past the age of teaching my children as they now teach me, but I know they would all have enjoyed the math and science and history contained in this very rich publication.

About the Author

Tara Marko, MSN, RNC-NIC, is an experienced Neonatal Nursing clinician and educator, with a specialty in Level III and IV NICUs. She is currently in clinical practice in the Level IV NICU at Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego, CA. She also serves as Adjunct Professor and Clinical Instructor at California State University School of Nursing, San Marcos, CA, where she teaches Maternal-Child Health. She has worked in the pharmaceutical industry as a Clinical Safety Specialist for Merck and a Pharmacovigilance Coordinator for i3 Drug Safety. She received her MSN from Seton Hall University, where she was awarded the Sara M. Erickson Award for Leadership in Nursing.
